"You've been following me," Jim said to girl in the darkness. He could see from the rise and fall of her chest that she was more nervous than he was. She didn't appear to be afraid. She was just nervous the way schoolgirls get nervous. "It's okay. I'm not angry."
"You're friends with Vintner," she said. Her voice had the timber of clinking crystal.
"You were there," Jim said. "You were one of the one's watching me with the gorilla."
She giggled. "Yes. We all were." Jim wondered how many there were.
"I need to see Virgil," Jim said. She giggled again. "Why are you laughing?"
"It's funny that you topsiders all call him Virgil."
"Do you know his name?" Jim asked. She shook her head. The shadows moved as she did so. "So what do you call him?"
"We just call him Finder," she replied, "because he gets things for us. He goes to the surface and brings things back."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. Like food and books and batteries." She said the word batteries like they were magical.
