Chapter 46: Jim Tries to Reason with Vintner

"Come on up," Vintner said into the intercom when the buzzer to his apartment door rang. He didn't bother to ask who it was this time. What would have been the point? Jim didn't rush up the stairs. He took his time, still trying to figure out exactly what he was going to say to Vintner. How exactly do you break the news to someone that everything they believe about themselves is a lie? When Jim got to the door to Vintner's apartment, he knocked on the door, making a dead hollow sound with his fist. Vintner opened the door. "Come in," Vintner said to Jim and stood aside so that Jim could walk past him through the doorway. Jim was shocked to see how far the apartment had deteriorated from its already sad state of a few days earlier. Jim inhaled the sad smell of stale liquor. He saw the empty bottles piled up in the sink. Vintner didn't look any better than his apartment.
