Chapter 49: Vintner at the Altar

Vintner placed a glass in front of Jim, next to Jim's gun. He placed the other glass in front of his own empty chair. Then he uncorked the cap on the bottle of scotch and poured them both a heavy glass. It was good scotch, stuff that he had left over from his wealthy past. Vintner didn't know why he hadn't drunken it yet. He had always felt like he should be saving if for some sort of occasion. Now seemed as good a time as any.

Vintner sat down and took a sip of his drink. He let the scotch roll around on his tongue before he swallowed it. He had trouble taking his eyes of the gun on the table. Of course he has a gun, Vintner thought to himself. He's a private detective. He's a former cop. Vintner didn't know why he had expected anything different. The truth was, Vintner hadn't really expected anything at all. He simply hadn't bothered. Jim lifted his glass in a mock toast and took a sip of his drink as well.
