Part Four of My Life; Rebukes, Part 1

Luke 15:21

His son said to him, "Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son."

'Crack!

"It's raining cats and dogs." kataku lirih.

'Shuck. shuck.' "Sialan, becek sekali di sini—dan semak belukarnya tinggi sekali." gerutu Levi. "I need you to be quiet, mate. Police are on our tails." kata Simon. Entahlah.

"Now what? What are we supposed to do? I can't just go back to Mr. Christ. That'll be—to be honest, I don't, I don't know what will happen, I, uh, I—where are we going?" kata Benedict.

"Somewhere. Follow my lead." jawab Messias.

"Yeah, but where, exactly?" kata Thomas.

"Somewhere safe."

"I never really know if we can trust you—especially after our plan foiled."

Messias menengadah, lalu berhenti. Semuanya berhenti. Lalu dia menoleh, "Look, if you can't work with me, fine! Go back there and scrub that piss off the toilet until the day you rot," katanya mencengkeram kerah Thomas, "So much for being thankful, eh mate? To be honest, the only—" "Look, stop it. Now." kataku memegang tangan Messias, "The only one that let your friend dead back there—" "I said, stop—" "it might be you, mate." kata Messias dengan muka merah padam. Semuanya terdiam.

"You were a massive pussy. You scared of the plan, so you just wait down below."

"Let go of me." kata Thomas tenang. Well, it's the calm before the storm.

"You didn't go with William upstairs, you fucked up, mate—really bad."

"Final warning, Messias. Let. Go." kata Thomas semakin dalam.

"You were—" "Stop, it. Come on, shove it!" kataku melepas cengkeraman Messias dari kerah Thomas, dan mendorong mereka berdua ke belakang. "Nobody is a burden to anybody. Thomas has been beating everybody down there to pulp." kataku menoleh ke Messias, "If it wasn't for him, the officers—riot guards included, they would've caught us right now."

"And, without Messias, we wouldn't have any plan at all. No intel about any lieutenant, no keys, no anything. The plan goes awry, that I understand, but things were spiraling out of control. So beat it!" lanjutku menoleh ke Thomas.

"Listen, here. If the two of you could not knock it off, then I'm off with the boys. Alright?" kataku lagi.

"Alright. I got it, mate. Sorry for causing a scene." kata Thomas menggelengkan kepala. "You're not causing a scene. You're just yelling at each other—and the audience looking is just us." 'Vrrrrrrrr,' suara helikopter berderu keras di atas kepala. "Fuck. Hide!" kata Messias cepat. "Holy shit!" kata Henry ketakutan. "I'm not going back there. No, no—I will not, no, no, no." katanya panik. He seems scared of it, but he's been in prison for a long time. Why now? "Look, you're not going back there, if you could hide!" kataku mencengkeram kerahnya dan menariknya ke balik pohon.

'Vrrr....' deru helikopter menjauh, dan lampu sorotnya membuat kita semua semakin nyaman dalam kegelapan. That is something you grow up on, being an assassin and all. 'Phew.' kataku bersender di pohon. "Is this the right thing?" tanya Henry di sebelahku.

"I just—I don't know where this life takes me anymore. I feel—"

"Lost?" kataku melihat bintang-bintang di langit sana. They never shine brighter before.

"Yeah." jawab Henry menghela napas panjang. "Lost. That's the word."

"I always said to myself—am I born as an assassin?"

"Can't I play football with Judas if only I had the chance?" lanjutku, menyesal.

"I hear you, mate. I have a family. Now?" kata Henry mengepalkan kedua tangannya, "Disavowed. Unwelcomed. Shunned. Me—the only son." lanjutnya melihat langit-langit. "But enough about me. What about you? How's family?"

"Hey! Come on, we got no time! We must hurry up!" teriak Messias.

"I must save the story then, eh? Come on, lad." kataku bergegas berdiri.

"You owe me one, then." jawab Henry berdiri dan melihatku dalam-dalam.

Aku tersenyum. Mom and Dad is dead. Francis is my only brother—and he turned out to be one of the people I despise. The only reason I continue to become an assassin. My family are nothing but dusts now, gathered in heaven—if there is any heaven at all. Am I believing in purpose now? Am I seeking for one? Never before, I was so confused with life. So mad, but I keep calm anyway. I guess god does hate me, after all.

"So," kata Messias menyingkirkan belukar menjulang di depannya, "We're here. At the very least." katanya menunjuk gubuk kecil di depan. "Is it a safehouse?" tanyaku. "Yup." "Wait, and James is fine with it? He's not going to go chase us to here?" tanya Thomas.

"No. I built it myself. It have everything we could possibly need." lanjut Messias menuju pintu depan.

"Who's James?" tanya Henry kepada Simon. "Our boss. He's the one funding the entire assassin thing—with all the mumbo-jumbo about the church thing." jawab Simon. "Probably getting all the pounds from the church itself too, I guess." lanjut Levi.

"Ain't god a funny person, eh?" kata Simon lagi, tersenyum.

"Come on. Inside, all of you now." kata Messias setelah membuka gembok pintu. "Wait—all this time, you're carrying a key? Where?" kataku masuk. "You don't want to know, mate." tukas Messias menaikkan kedua alisnya. Alright. Maybe I bloody don't. Pikirku sembari masuk ke dalam—oh wow. The floor is cement, and clean. After all that mud, I'd be glad me feet gets to enjoy all of this. Little things, eh?

"This place is bloody huge." kata Thomas melihat sekeliling.

"Probably because you get used to the cell." kata Benedict dari belakang.

"Yeah. Makes sense—ow, the floor is nice! Jolly good, this place." kata Thomas seperti anak kecil.

"Yeah. Can't believe were now in awe over a bloody floor." kata Simon menggesek-gesek kakinya ke lantai. "You like it, though." jawab Levi. "Very much, yeah."

"Alright. Now that everybody's safe and sound," kata Messias melihat ke luar, 'Blam.' "Let's talk about this life of ours. Entangled, one to another." tukasnya menutup pintu, 'Click!' dan menguncinya.

"What do you mean, Messias?" kataku mulai waspada. This whole ensemble seems fishy.

"Are you saying we should be together?" tanya Thomas lagi.

"No—no, I don't." jawab Messias menggelengkan kepala. "We—maybe, maybe it's just me, but I want to get James and end this." katanya menaruh kunci pintu di rak dan mengambil pistol. Wait. I knew that gun.

It's a Berreta 9mm, with the wood handles carved like a Cross and angels on each side.

"You intend to end his life?" kataku bertanya.

"Seems like a pretty long shot, and a fucking bad plan." kata Benedict.

"You heard them, Messias." kata Thomas maju, "Whatever you do, we will get the consequences too—so I suggest you think clearly." katanya sembari memegang pistol milik Messias. I don't even have a knife since then, let alone craft a bloody shivvie.

"So, your plan?" tanya Messias balik.

"We don't have any—right?" jawab Levi, melihat ke sekelilingnya.

"No. no, we don't. We don't have any plan at all." jawab Simon.

The boys were right. I couldn't believe James and his entire army of assassin, but even still, we are an assassin. If we delve enough in this business in the past, we'd know best that he didn't kill his own kin. But he sent Rutherford back then—with a clear intention to kill me, that I know best. But for what? To tie the loose ends?

"Tell me about your reason, then." kataku kepada Messias.

"You all had doubts. You all had reasons to believe—or not, to James. But here's the truth, he's no better than any of the blood-sucking creatures out there." kata Messias mendekat ke arahku. "He must have said that he's trying to extend the god's judgement, but to what cost?"

"He's becoming one of them in the process. He's killing innocents, he killed countless before, and he will kill us." katanya benar-benar dekat ke wajahku. "Aku berharap bisa menghentikannya sebelum itu terjadi."

"Why? You afraid of death?" tanya Levi, melipat kedua tangannya dan melihat sekitar.

"I'm afraid he will be the harbinger of death itself." kata Messias menuju Levi.

"Isn't that what we are doing? I mean—our entire life before?" tanya Thomas.

"Yeah. You're not sparing anyone back at prison, either. Whether they're innocent or not." tanya Simon juga.

"And you were not complaining either back then, eh?" kata Messias meletakkan pistol ke meja di pojok ruangan. Aku tersentak. He's right. "Were you saying that it is unfair to James that you must—whether you like it or not, to assassinate someone you knew nothing about?"

"Is it? Someone? Anyone?" katanya melayangkan tangan kemana-mana. He's absolutely right.

"Now you all get my point." ujarnya lagi, melipat kedua tangannya di dada.

"Let's face it. We are all bound. Shackled by the very intentions of those who dictates our life, scared to steer away." katanya menuju pintu depan. "Even at this very moment."

'Click!' Messias membuka pintu. "Anyone want to leave early, now?"

Semuanya bisu seribu bahasa. Hanya sebarisan orang-orang yang saling melihat satu sama lain.

"Life is like that. It always has been like that." lanjutnya menutup pintu pelan-pelan, "We never want to explore the unknown for whatever reason. We were scared of any possibility—anything, everything. For us all in this room, murdering people is more enjoyable than partaking ourselves in a journey to find our true calling. That—that is given."

Messias menghela napas. Lalu menuju ke tengah-tengah ruangan.

"But that is of no more," katanya melihat ke langit-langit.

"Like our dearest Judas, we shall find our way. Tempting was the chance to go back to being a murderous puppet, eh?" katanya melihat semua orang dengan tersenyum. "And then we will die anyway. Knowing only to wonder what if I do this, what if I have done that. Aren't we all the most similar to those people on the streets, passing the streets on green light? We are all born on different circumstances, raised by different elders, grew up on different farms—ended up being a cattle, anyway," katanya bernapas dalam, "Even the most prized cow will be dead—remembered only for their fat, or their color of skin, but never their names. A prized cattle, yeah, that's what the humanity is."

Lalu Messias terdiam lagi.

"You made this complicated." kata Thomas mengusap matanya.

"Life is complicated, Thomas. You should learn that while in jail." jawab Messias.

"You have a point, Messias." kata Benedict. "But what about the life we always wanted?" katanya menaikkan bahunya, "Isn't now the perfect time to just go for it?"

"Especially after my mate bloody died for it." sambung Simon.

"Like I said before," kata Messias naik dan duduk di meja, "You're all free to go." katanya lagi.

"The door is there. Please, make yourself at home." tudingnya ke pintu keluar.

"I'm with you, Messias." kataku setelah lama berpikir. "Yakin?" kata Messias. "You're doubting me now?" kataku tersentak mendengar jawabannya.

"No, no," jawab Messias menggelengkan kepala, "It's just that I want to make sure."

"Yah, aku semakin yakin sekarang." kataku sedikit tersinggung—dan terluka, tentu saja.

"What about me?" kata Henry. "Ah, Henry." kata Messias melihat Henry sambil tersenyum, "Jujur, aku sampai melupakan kehadiranmu." "Thanks. I am that sidekick-kind of person, eh." kata Henry pahit. Sekarang ada dua orang yang tersinggung. Bagus.

"I don't know really, mate," kata Messias menggaruk rambutnya, "What you really wants? I mean, what, wha—what do you want, now that you leave jail?" lanjutnya menggunakan banyak isyarat tangan. "I, uh," jawab Henry pelan, "I don't really know, either." Hmm. So he's that kind of guy that kills a marriage in two seconds flat. No wonder he's a sociopath. Pikirku berprasangka negatif—aku banyak berprasangka negatif belakangan ini.

"Care to join us?" kata Simon tiba-tiba. "We can always use a helping hand."

"Based on my performance back at prison, I already know my report card." jawab Henry.

"It's not always about skills, mate. No, it's not." lanjut Simon lagi.

"Yeah," sanggahku, "Besides, you've committed crime already. Is it really that hard?" kataku menepuk pundaknya. "So inspiring. Thank you." jawabnya dengan senyum palsu, sembari meremas tanganku—sangat-sangat erat. Patah rasanya tulangku. "Point taken." kataku tersenyum balik.

"So?" kata Levi—roman mukanya menunjukkan anak ini capek. Tidak heran.

"I still don't know, lad. Maybe I'll wander around." kata Henry menaikkan kedua bahunya.

"Well, the streets are dark, though. Staying for the night?" kataku tidak rela melihatnya pergi. Not romanticizing things here—but he actually is there in the prison when I need him the most. "I thought you guys are not afraid of the dark." jawab Simon, menatap mukaku dalam-dalam. "That is true," kataku menjelaskan, "Aku berbicara tentang kamu, lebih tepatnya."

"Aku tidak tahu—tapi aku akan mencari tahu, tepatnya." kata Henry menuju pintu.

"Are you sure about it? About this?" kataku lagi.

"I have nobody, no one else, no purpose left," kata Henry pelan, "Which means I am free to do what I want." lanjutnya lagi, melihat kami semua satu persatu. "Well," tukas Henry tiba-tiba, "I wish you luck then." katanya memeluk Henry. "Thanks, mate."

"Come on all! Give him your hug then, eh?" kataku kepada semuanya—mereka langsung menuju Henry. I gotta admit, it felt good to have a brother for such a short period of time. I will miss him.

"Come here, you old coot." kata Simon memeluknya dengan senang. "Hahah—with pleasure, young lad. Pleasure."

"Feels good, huh?" kata Thomas kepadaku. "Yah, aku tidak pernah menduganya seperti ini." kataku menggaruk rambutku. "He doesn't have purpose in life, and he will go out looking for it. Now that's—" "You want to do it too, eh?" sambarku tiba-tiba. Thomas tersenyum, "Yeah. Yeah, mate. I do."

With moments like these, who really needs all that thing about a bigger world stuff? I began to realize that, the world is in your palm of hands—or whether they are too big to be grasped to—it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that much anyway. Moments were always a reach away, and who am I to throw that away? A heartless assassin that killed many others wouldn't even do that, eh?

"Oi, wake up!" kata seseorang dengan suara parau menendang kepalaku. "What the—what is this?" gumamku tidak jelas. "Wake up! Come on, everyone, hop hop!" kata suara parau itu lagi. Jelas, itu Messias. Lama di penjara mungkin membuatnya begitu disiplin waktu, dia mungkin saja memarahi sipir penjara jika beliau terlambat bangun.

"It's fucking sunrise, mate." kata Benedict terduduk.

"Which explains it. We need to get out of here." jawab Messias bersiap-siap.

"They found us?!"

"No, Benedict. Tapi mereka akan ke sini."

"Oh. Kamu yakin sekali? Atas dasar apa?"

"Mate, believe me, will you?" tukas Messias tanpa basa-basi. "And everyone else, come on up already!" teriaknya menendang Thomas. "Ow, fuck!" teriaknya. Well, that's one less lad to be awoken now. "But why?" gumamku masih tidak jelas.

"I thought I already say it." kata Messias. Aku mengangguk saja, seraya menggaruk rambutku yang kusut. Ah, Simon masih tertidur rupanya. "Don't sleep again, you idiot!"

"Okay, okay! Enough with the kicking already!" teriakku meminta pengampunan. His foot stinks like the toilet back in the prison. Or maybe—never mind. "Jadi?" kataku lagi. "Maksudmu?" jawab Messias memberikan pandangan sinis. "Anu,"

"Where are we going? Why?" kataku, masih dengan mulut yang bau.

"We'll be back at James. That's right—we'll be going to his assassin service." kata Messias yakin.

"Hah? Tapi, tapi—kenapa?" kataku gelagapan, langsung terbangun karenanya. "You'd have anywhere—any place we could be totally safe?" kata Messias menuding ke luar. Tepat sekali. Semua orang sedikit-sedikit sudah terbangun. Wake up, lads. This godfather of assassins will give us a little pep talk. "Listen to me very, very closely," kata Messias melihat ke semua orang dan melipat kedua tangannya,

"James mengikuti kita. Dengan sangat-sangat dekat. Begitu pula polisi. Dan seluruh punggawa keadilan di Suisse." kata Messias menunjuk kesana kemari—walaupun aku kurang yakin dia menunjuk kemana. "Dan satu-satunya harapanmu jika mereka datang adalah bersiap-siap."

"And if you can tie up your loose ends, that is jolly good."

Hm. Hm. He has a good point. No matter where we go now, the only thing waiting is an apparent death—it's quite inevitable. If we are marching towards this death itself, maybe trying to fight back relentlessly has a point to be accounted for as a choice. "Aku ikut denganmu." kataku yakin.

"You sure?" tanya Thomas, setengah terbangun. Tapi dia pasti mendengarku tadi.

"Yeah, yeah—I guess. It's just that, I don't know what to do." jawabku.

"Yah, kalau kamu sendiri tidak yakin, lalu kenapa?" tukas Thomas lagi. "Maybe," jawab Simon yang juga setengah terbangun—astaga, bau sekali napas mereka semua—dan menudingkan tangannya ke arahku, "It's, maybe, uh—because, we, uh, we don't have any options left." "So you mean, this is our last resort?" debat Thomas lagi. Dia selalu senang berdebat, entah kenapa.

"No, this is not our last resort," kata Messias memberikan Thomas sebuah mint, "This is our—I mean, my first choice, actually." lanjutnya seraya memakan mint juga. "Hey! Aku mau satu!" kata Simon. "Bagaimana denganku?" kata Benedict menunjuk dirinya. Wow. What a convenient reason to wake up, lad. At least your breath won't be foul.

"Christ perlu diberi pelajaran. Lebih tepatnya, dia harus dihajar." kata Messias menyodorkan mint kepada semua orang. Sekarang aku berharap kalau aku juga merengek untuk diberikan satu. "Isn't that makes you the same, I mean, just like him?" kata Simon mengunyah mint.

"No," jawab Messias, "I am avenging the innocent families left behind."

"Sounded biblical." tukasku.

"Is it? You know what—I guess it is." katanya, mengangguk setuju dan tersenyum.

"Kau akan pergi sendirian?" kataku lagi. "Bukankah kau mengatakan kau akan ikut bersama-sama?" jawab Messias lagi. "Well, yes." jawabku singkat. "But, about the others—" "This is where we find our ways, then. You have no regrets watching Henry." I guess he's right. But they're—I known them for years. Feels so bad if I just have to leave them, leave everything behind. "Hey. We have ears." kata Thomas dari belakang. But of course.

"Thomas! Kamu sudah bangun?" kataku berbasa-basi.

"Apa? Lupakan. Messias, aku juga akan ikut denganmu." kata Thomas tak menggubrisku.

"Well. That sounded great. Let us join into the action, too." kata Levi.

"I'm with him. Anything he says." lanjut Simon. Oh, wow. This is rare.

"I guess you're the one left." kataku seraya semua orang mengalihkan pandangan pada satu orang tersisa. "Uh," gumam Benedict, "I guess I'll—I will go with you? Eh?" katanya ragu-ragu. "Are you sure?" tanya Thomas. "Well, that's pretty obvious," kata Messias menghampiri Benedict, "But you're coming, right?" "Yeah...right." jawab Benedict dengan mata sinis.

"Well, that counts as an answer, alright." jawabku menaikkan kedua tanganku.

"Alright, mate. Then let's gear up. We leave at noon." kata Messias mengambil pisau lipat dan menaruhnya di kaus kakinya, "As of right now, you all will be under my command. Strictly under my command. Future order will be given later. Any questions?" katanya mendadak serius. Wow. "Yeah," kata Simon mengangkat tangannya.

"Apa kamu benar-benar yakin?" kata Simon lagi.

Now I finally begin to notice what seems wrong—just a hunch, that something just doesn't sit quite right with me, or in this case, wth everyone else except Messias in this room. Why we don't have doubts? Isn't it just like back then, when we were running errands on killing people here and there? Is it any different? Is he working with James? I wish I could've seen the bigger picture here, but it's just…blank. Blank. Yeah, that's the word.

"Mungkin, sepertinya—aku punya perasaan, kita lakukan saja, sepertinya." kataku tergagap.

"Tidak tampak seperti orang yang yakin bagiku." kata Simon melihatku dengan sinis.

"Yeah, you're right. I am not that sure," jawabku mengangguk pelan, "But then again...maybe meeting with James can really gives me a peace of mind. Or answers. Or anything." lanjutku lagi. "Look, the thing is, I am not going anywhere, now that I know we can change this all. And," kataku mengambil jeda panjang.

"And? I am still listening, boss." kata Simon menunduk melihat roman mukaku.

"And, and I want to meet Saul. I, uh—"

"I miss him. And I cannot lose him, too, I guess." kataku menitikkan satu air mata. Tak diaya, akhirnya aku memikirkannya juga. He was my most kind boy, maybe the one that sticks us all altogether. Without him, Simon might've lose his nerve long time ago, Judas might have been silent his whole bloody life, and me—let's just say, he molds me into the way I am now.

"I hear you, boss." kata Simon pelan. Aku tahu, dia pasti melihat air mataku.

"And we heard you, too, William." kata Thomas menepuk punggungku.

"They say it's hard to fight without a cause. Well," lanjut Thomas dalam-dalam, "You found one. And our cause is to help you achieve it." tukasnya menepuk punggungku lagi. "Yeah. It's about time. I miss Saul too." kata Benedict. "Thank you guys." jawabku tersenyum kecil. And I see a glimpse of a young lad scared to go back. A young lad scarred to go back.

"Dan Levi...kau tidak harus mengikuti jejak kaki kami." kataku pada Levi yang membisu.

Aku tahu, ini pasti berat baginya. Pasti. Dan andaikata dia melangkah pergi, aku bisa memakluminya. "I—I want to go back, actually. It's just that—" katanya terbata-bata, "I, uh, I don't know what to do. What to say, what to actually expects. What if he—what if he's, what if—" lanjutnya panik. Lalu dia bernapas dalam-dalam. "What if he's already dead? I can't bear to lose one mate, let alone two." Levi sepertinya ketakutan. Bukan.

"Well mates," kata Messias, "We'd better gear up, then. The shelf is full of weapons of your choice, so git it." lanjutnya membuka lemari-lemari yang sedari kemarin tertutup rapat. Isinya adalah senjata—banyak sekali senjata. Is he preparing for this moment? Scratch that, is he preparing for...us?

"That's a lot of weapons." kata Thomas terkesima.

"Yeah...yeah. Apparently. Bloody hell! And all kinds, too!" kata Simon juga.

So nobody is suspicious. Well, it must've been my mind, then. "Oke. Aku akan mengambil seperlunya saja." kataku melangkah menuju lemari itu—mungkin satu-satunya furnitur di ruangan ini. "Take all you need! We might never come back here in one pieces—or pieces, if that's okay." kata Messias menepuk dadaku. "Hm. All I need? That shelf might come out empty, then." jawabku berpikir. "Well, leave some for your mates, of course. Thomas! Pick up! You too are the bosses, so you two go first." kata Messias mempersilahkan kami berdua. Wow. The first time a privilege really comes in handy.

"With my upmost pleasure." kata Thomas tersenyum.

"Isn't it deepest pleasure?" sela Levi, tiba-tiba.

"Shut the fuck up, mate." jawab Simon lagi. Ah, there it is. I thought I miss it already.

"I'm going to start, then." kataku melangkah maju. Wah. Assault rifles, heavy-duty machine guns, hell—even flamethrowers are here. I'm going to pick the neccessities—then I'll go crazy on the ammo. Kataku tersenyum kecil. "M4, Remington, dan Glock...yah, aku kira sudah cukup." kataku beranjak dari lemari itu.

"You didn't lie when you say necessities." kata Messias terkesan.

"It's all in the hands of the professionals, not the guns." kataku sedikit sombong.

"The guns do help, though. Like, a lot." kata Levi menyela. Yeah, of course they are. Of course.

"Come on then, Thomas! Chop chop!" teriak Messias kepada Thomas. This guy is panicking, I can tell. Or—am I paranoid myself? Going to here, it's hard to clearly describe whatever it is I am going through. Either I am lunatic and all these mates are going the same way, or am I overreacting myself. "I will welcome myself, then." kata Thomas seraya menuju lemari.

"Tolong sisakan beberapa untuk kami. Usahakan yang paling bagus, juga." kata Levi.

"Mate, you really have to do it? You're not exactly fit for that." jawab Simon, melihat Levi sinis.

"Yah, apalah salahnya berharap. It doesn't cost a dime." kata Levi balik.

"What should I bring with me, then? I am confused." kata Benedict kepada Messias. "Uh, you should...pick, uh, I guess, the biggest firepower?" kata Messias berpikir. "Flamethrower, then." kata Levi mengangguk-angguk. "Mate, you're always crazy with flame. Are you born in hell?" jawab Simon. "No. I like setting things on fire." jawabnya.

"You know, I guess there's a name for that." kataku berpikir.

"Don't think too hard, William. You're also not fit for that." kata Messias. Fuck you too, then.

"That's it. I'm done." tukas Thomas berbalik. What did he choose? pikirku melihatnya. Turns out, it's not that different from mine. A shotgun, assault rifle, and sniper rifle. Combine that with one emergency gun and a handknife, and we're all mirrored.

"Oke. Simon dan Levi, silahkan." kata Messias mempersilahkan.

"You really don't want to pit both of them altogether." jawabku menggelengkan kepala.

"They will learn this way. It's for their life, too, eh?" tukas Messias.

"Bollocks for their life. You just want to see them feuding." kataku memandang mereka perlahan—yup, they will be fighting soon. Just, just you wait. "Mungkin iya, mungkin tidak. Kita lihat saja." kata Messias melihatku.

"I am done. Can I pick the flamethrower, though?" kata Levi berbalik—tangannya penuh.

"No, Levi. I just described you a thousand reasons why not." jawab Simon menenteng shotgun.

"Fair enough, then." kata Levi mengangkat pundaknya.

"And you see, William," kata Messias perlahan, "This is how life really unfolds. Does the chances you take define you? Maybe yes, maybe not. But chances are chances—they are there to be taken away with your very hands." katanya bijak, atau sombong, entahlah.

"In life, you take chances. And you do not regret. Because you will be fucked up anyway."

Sounds sincere. "Oke. Bagus, sangat-sangat menginspirasi." kataku berkata ala kadarnya. "Tapi bagaimana jika pilihanmu salah, dan itu mencederai yang lain?" tanyaku lagi, berharap pencerahan selagi Messias membagikan tips-tips hidup dengan gratis. "Well," katanya bernapas panjang, "It is definitely a bad choice." "Well, good answer, then, talk to you later, and I—" "But." selanya tiba-tiba. "You have a choice after choice. You're growing up, and you will not fuck things over again."

Hm. Not bad for a simple, fast pep talk. "Thank you, then. Jolly good talk." kataku basa-basi.

"Terima kasih kembali," jawab Messias cepat.

"Oke, semuanya!" teriak Messias—membuat Benedict tersentak. Seketika senjata-senjata dari rak berjatuhan. 'Clank! Clank!' 'Vrrr,' 'Clank!' 'Clank. clank.' Wajahnya menggigit giginya dalam-dalam. "Sorry. You, uh—you startled me?" kata Benedict takut. Messias hanya mengangguk.

"Semuanya!" lanjutnya lagi. "We will be leaving now. Make sure you did not forget anything. Your needs, your memento, your sanity, and the most important of all—your guns." katanya serius. Oh, now our sanity is not as important as our guns? Bollocks, that is. "Sepertinya semua sudah lengkap." kata Levi. "Me too." jawab Simon—tunggu, mereka saling menjawab sekarang? "Aku sudah siap." kata Thomas.

"Aku, aku juga—sepertinya. Yah. Sudah, sudah." kataku terbata-bata.

"You sure? You sure seems a bit cranky." kata Messias menaikkan satu alisnya.

"Mate, I am not on drugs." jawabku malas.

"Very well, then." jawabnya juga malas, "Benedict! Selesaikah?" tanyanya kepada Benedict yang sibuk menaruh semua senjata kembali di rak. "Sudah, sudah! Tentu saja!" katanya panik. Poor lad. If only those guns has live bullet, he'd be dead meat by now. "Good. Carry on then, lads." kata Messias tenang, seraya menuju pintu depan.

"Remember; don't forget anything. We'll never come back here." katanya lagi.

"Wait, wha—right now, in the middle of the bloody day?!" tanyaku penasaran.

"Mate, it's past noon. It's almost night, actually. About, uh," katanya melihat ke langit, "Actually about 6 p.m." jawabnya, melihatku yakin. "Are we sleeping through a day straight?" kata Simon. "Presumably, yeah. Now leave." kata Messias lagi. Sepertinya dia tidak berniat berbasa-basi sekarang. Id' better go now before I got on his bad side—who knows his bad side, actually.

"All right. I'm all ready now. I, uh, I guess." kataku mengikuti Messias keluar. Oh wow. It is dark.

"Uh, alright—I guess?" jawab Messias.

"Expecting a wholesome answer, especially after everything." kataku menjelaskan.

"You're not getting any. I will give it to Henry. Lad's need it." katanya tersenyum.

"Oh, fuck off!" kataku lagi. "Come on, lads. What took you so long? Dear god." kata Messias mengusir mereka keluar dari rumah—sebenarnya, dilihat-lihat lagi, tempat ini lebih mirip gubuk reyot. Di dalamnya tidak ada apapun, bahkan sepotong marmer pun tidak ada. Dan di luarnya hanya tembok bersemen, dilengkapi dengan atap. The essentials, of course. This is a survivalist hut. Wonder if there's any hobo wqnking each other here?

Derap kaki—mungkin bukan derap, sekumpulan suara kaki keluar dari gubuk ini membuatku semakin penasaran kemana tujuan kita. "So, where are we going?" tanyaku menenteng tali shotgunku dengan erat. "You ever know the poet?" kata Messias. Poet? "Uh...you're going to write a poem?" "Clearly you don't know him." tukas Messias tak acuh. Oh, wow. So rude, mate. "Yes—I guess? Who is it?" tanyaku semakin penasaran.

"If we going to storm James, then this wouldn't do." kata Messias. Oh. I thought only I believed in that. Turns out, he is realistic. "Okay," kataku mengangguk seraya melihat semuanya sudah keluar, "But what's his deal?" kataku. 'Creaak,' 'Clank!' 'Cuh-click.' suara pintu dan kunci terdengar keras—atau mungkin karena di antah-berantah ini tidak ada apa-apa. Mungkin kumbang saja tidur. "Kita lihat nanti." jawab Messias melihat gubuknya untuk terakhir kali. Mate having memories, I guess? With this shite hut? But really, I don't give a damn about this hut.

"Are you having second thoughts?" tanyaku pada Messias.

"But of course, William boy." katanya pelan, memegang pintu dan mencengkeramnya erat.

Woah, this is getting intense. "You alright, mate?" tanyaku lagi, serius kali ini. "Never been better, mate. Now shall we?" katanya sembari menutup pintu.

"Everyone ready now?" tanya William pada semua orang yang berbaris rapi di sisi sebelah kami. "Aye." kata Thomas. "Yup—let's carry on." kata Levi tersenyum. I guess he's having wet dreams about the weapons he's carrying. Everyone else just nodded sparingly. "Alright then," kata Messias pasti dan tegas, "Let's put an end to this final chapter of our life, and...hopingly create a new life afterwards, eh?" katanya dengan senyum kecil di satu sisi bibirnya. Now that is rare to see.

"Thankyou, mate." bisikku pelan—aku tahu dia tidak akan mendengarnya.

But hearing him putting an end to this life I have—we have lived, it really brings a closure to me. We never how this will turns out at the end, but I am glad. Truly glad. And I began thinking about the days yet to come. Why am I like this?

The stars shines like they always had before, so does the seas still create waves we have seen ever, the mountain never soar higher still, but the heart is beating like it never was—I guess life does brings meaning sometimes, albeit at the most wrong place and the wrong time. I guess I took it for granted. I guess I do never wants to be an assassin. Who knows it turned out like this? No, not me—maybe not even god too. But the times are good and the mates are lovely, and I never want it to stop anytime soon now.

Yeah. I'd be pissing myself if I ever said this before—I am thankful for my life. Honestly.

"Shhh! Be quiet, eh?" kata Messias menyuruh kami diam. Not that we're making that big of a fuss, though. "Just where in the bloody hell are we?" tanya Thomas di sebelahku.

"This place is really—uh, eccentric." kata Benedict pada Levi.

"If you'd known the man, that is eclectic. Given." jawab Levi pelan dan santai.

Aku melihat mereka bertiga. Aku mulai melangkah mendekati Levi. "Tell me who is it that we're supposed to be meeting again?" bisikku lirih. "The man with the plans. Rather, the man with the ideas. They used to call him—"

"The Vault Guardian." kata Henry, berdiri di sebelah pintu gerbang berwarna hitam berkarat.

"Lads, you're about to see history in the making." katanya dengan penuh rasa bangga. The hell is that lad being snobbish about? This is not some sort of silver spoon residence, is it? "Apa maksudnya?" kata Simon, juga kepada Levi. Mungkin disinilah bidang para intel bersinar dan para pembunuh bayaran hanya melihat keheranan. "Kau akan tahu sebentar lagi. Jalanlah." jawabnya lagi, tenang. The thing is, his calm demeanor only freaks me out massively.

'Creaak!' bunyi gerbang itu dibuka. Suara engsel menambah suram suasana tempat ini. Supposedly, if I could take a guess and gander around here, I'd say it's a cemetery before turned into this—whatever this bloody place is. "Guardian!" teriak Messias masuk ke dalam gerbang. Di dalamnya ruangan besar. Persis seperti sebuah mess hall. Thinking about that damned prison now, fuck.

"This is getting creepier every passing minute." bisik Thomas.

"Is it, mate? I have no idea. Thought this place was cheerful as a strawberry cake, eh?" jawabku.

"Yeah, damn you too, you bloody twat."

"Ah, there you are!" kata Messias lagi. I was expecting a grim reaper or a bloody assassin, turns out it was an old chap.

"What? Who is he?" kataku penasaran, menoleh pada Levi di belakang.

"The Vault Guardian, but of course." jawabnya santai.

Wha—why are we here, anyway? I thought Messias wanted to go to James, turns out we waste our bloody breath fiddling around this cemetery with an old geezer who's about to kick the bucket.

"Aku tahu apa yang ada di pikiran kalian," kata Messias mendekat kembali.

"Siapa dia? Kenapa kita di sini? Kenapa di sini seperti kuburan?"

Well, you read my mind. "Never thought you could do clairvoyance." kataku tersenyum kecut. "Oh, fuck off." balas Messias. Oh, orang tua itu mendekati kita juga. Namun, dengan sangat, sangat perlahan. Semoga dia tidak mati di tengah jalan.

"He looks gloomy as bloody fuck." bisik Thomas ke telingaku.

"You know what, mate? He fits this cemetery." jawabku sembari menyunggingkan senyum.

"Nice one."

"This your lads, is it?" tanya kakek itu menunjuk kami semua.

"Aye. We're here for a reason—something massive is coming down." jawab Messias.

"Seems like a little loose for a team. Anyone coming soon?"

"Uh, no...this is, this is, eh," kata Messias gagap, 'cough' "This is all of them."

"But you said something massive is coming down." kata kakek itu menunjuk-nunjuk muka Messias. "This, my boy," katanya lagi, menunjuk kami, lagi, dan berbalik menuju arah dia datang, "is not something massive."

"Yes. But I—"

"But you what, boy? Messias, clear this crowd! You all, go home already!" teriaknya keras.

"I noticed you have a bitter feeling on someone." kata Messias, merayu kakek-kakek yang melangkah pergi itu. "Not anymore now. I make amends with life—and moving on. You know, you should do it too." balasnya melipat tangan ke punggungnya, seperti orang tua pada umumnya. "Bagaimana jika aku bisa membalasnya?!" teriak Messias lantang, suaranya sampai menggaung di ruangan besar kosong ini.

"You cannot do it, Messias. You cannot." balas kakek itu.

"How could you be so sure? I am Messias, the assassin that never misses!"

"And I am the former Prophet, the assassin that never leave anyone alive!" teriak kakek itu.

Wow. They leveled out the battlefield, don't they? We just staring blatantly, not knowing what to do. "What are they—" "It's him. The Prophet." kata Thomas. "Apa—siapa, siapa dia sebenarnya? Kau kenal dengannya?" bisik kita berdua bercakap pelan, berharap mereka tidak mendengar. "He's a fucking legend, that's whom he is."

"You heard me, Messias. Witness Prophet before your eyes!" tukas kakek itu.

"And even I failed to do that. I cannot murder him—the very tainted man of our times." lanjutnya.

"If that is, you just need to give me time, then." jawab Messias menepuk dadanya.

"Sorry, boy. Not with this squad."

"I have said it, Prophet! What you failed to do alone, I'll do it together!"

"I said not! Not with this squad, boy! Silent!"

"But you will never know! I—I, uh, I will do it, no matter what!" teriak Messias terengah-engah.

"Lihatlah dirimu sekarang." kata Prophet memandang sinis Messias yang kehabisan napas. "They used to call me Vault Guardian. You lads used to call me that," katanya berbalik lagi, kali ini semakin dekat dengan pintu masuknya, "I will give you keys to anywhere. Any weapons you'd ever wanted. All the tips for every mission you're carrying. All this time—I'm just helping James building his tyranny even more, is not it?"

"I am the cause of this evil. The harbinger of murder itself." katanya pelan, membuka pintu.

"But you wont listen to anyone else, huh? Don't you?!" teriak Messias, masih gigih.

"You have not the necessary squad to do it. And the means, I shall give." kata Prophet bijak. "One last time. One last mission. One last man remaining. The creator of this whole absurdity itself," lanjutnya membuka pintu, "Come with me. All of you." katanya, akhirnya melihat kami semua—yang sedari tadi hanya melongo melihat serentetan kejadian yang terjadi. This assassin service sure have a long history behind it. Only one can wonder what started it—now that we intend to give an end to it.

"Come." katanya mempersilahkan kami semua masuk.

"What is the meaning of this all? You trying to kill us now?" tanya Messias tidak percaya.

Just a moment ago, he's asking this old chap for help. Then he turned all cynical with this all. I guess he's having a mental breakdown knowing all the truth unfolds before him. Just like me back then, when I discovered I killed my own brother.

Wait.

Is he trying to do the same to Messias? Is this a trap? Bloody fuck. I don't know what to do, who to trust—except my mates. "Hey, be wary. This might be a trap." bisikku kepada yang lain. "Got it, boss." kata Simon. Levi mengangguk—begitu pula Benedict. I guess they're just as dumbfounded as I am. "Of course, William. I don't know if this guy is for real." bisik Thomas. Good. All I know, is that something is fishy. I should've known the moment we stepped into this godforsaken place.

"Something tells me this guy is straight-up mental." bisikku pelan.

I wish I was wrong, boy, how I always wished I was wrong. Perhaps it's now? Maybe dear god can hear my whim for up there. "Masuklah." kata kakek itu, membuka pintu tempatnya menemui kami. Wow. The inside is dark. Might as well do it now, if I die—then I die. "This place is bloody creepy." kata Simon meringkuk di dekatku. Sepertinya semua orang saling berdekatan sekarang.

"I'll lead the way—follow me carefully." kata kakek mengambil obor dan berjalan di depan kami.

'Clack. clack. clack.' suara derap kaki kami menyusuri lorong semen yang gelap ini membuat suasana semakin suram tiap menitnya. "So, why are you here, Prophet? You know, you could've done a lot of things." kata Messias di depan kami, dan di belakang kakek Prophet. "And a lot of things I have done." katanya memandu jalan. "And none," 'click!' bunyinya membuka kunci pagar di gang yang menyempit ini, "none ever worked. None—nil. Perhaps I was wrong." lanjutnya menyingkirkan gembok dan membuka pagar berkarat itu.

"Time to prove that you were indeed right." kata kakek Prophet memandu kami ke rumah besar.

"Is that a bloody mansion?" kataku setengah tak percaya.

"Aye, it seems. Is he rich? Why can't we be like him?" kata Thomas, aku merasakan ada nada-nada cemburu di dalamnya. But he has a point. After Messias's safehouse, now this old man has a mansion so big it can fit the entire North Suisse inside. Are you taking a piss?

"Come inside. Now." kata kakek itu menyusuri tangga yang besar. Rumah yang benar-benar majestik. Sepertinya nyaris setengah hektar luasnya. Dengan tinggi—aku tidak tahu, mungkin 4-5 lantai? Seems like this house came from 1800's era. Which means, if my thesis are right, they are not actually rich. They just bloody takes haunted property off someone else's hands. Or option two, they simply murdered everyone inside. Isn't that what we're particularly skilled at, eh?

"Welcome, gentlemen," katanya mempersilahkan kami yang sudah masuk.

"What the fuck—"

"Bloody hell. What is this place?" kataku terkesima. He has this whole armory just decked out nicely on the walls. Every walls on this bloody room. Even RPG, even C4. This man could go on hellbent against the whole freaking goddamned world if he wants to.

"I never thought a man could do this much." kata Messias sedikit tertohok.

"I am really in love with this room right now." kata Levi.

"Because of the decorations, I presume?" balas Benedict.

"Flamethrowers." kata Levi dan Simon berbarengan.

"Wha—you boys cant use that." kata Prophet seraya mereka bertiga saling bertatap-tatapan dengan intim. "You're not qualified." kata Prophet mendekati mereka dengan melipat kedua tangannya di belakang. "Jangan bilang kalau kakek-kakek dapat menenteng senjata berat." kata Levi, sedikit mengejek.

"I'm only 50-ish years old." kata Prophet tersenyum kecut. Aku sampai kaget mendengarnya.

"Say what, now?"

"Yeah. I remember that dearly. 50. 51, tops." katanya mengernyitkan dahi.

"If youre remembering age, then clearly you're old enough, doesn't it?" kata Benedict.

"Yeah. Fifty is nonsense. All that white hair and wrinkes, those—"

"Alright. Maybe fifty five. But that's it." tukas Prophet mengakhri pembicaraan. Messias sedari tadi hanya melihat-lihat senjata dari kejauhan. Mungkin dia cemburu gubuknya tak seindah ini? To be fair, if I have a safehouse too amongst my friends, we'd build the best we could. The only thing is we don't have one, sadly.

"Alright. Come here, there's someone I want you lads to meet." kata Prophet menaiki tangga.

"What is it again? We have walked like, miles now." gerutu Messias—tapi tetap naik juga.

"You boys—there's myriad of time to look at them later on. Carry on here." kata Prophet, sepertinya kepada kami semua. After all, we look like little snots checking out these weapons. What a time to be alive. "Alrighty." kataku beranjak naik. "I wanted to check out the flamethrower though." bisik Levi pelan. "Would you not—" "Shut the fuck up, Levi." balas Simon berbisik pula.

'Creaaak...' bunyi engsel pintu besar di ujung tangga itu terbuka lebar.

"This means that I shall give you—they will bring forth the truth that you shall witness, boys. Meet the formers." katanya pelan. Huh. Aren't you the wisest—wait, isn't those? "John? Luke?" kataku setengah tidak percaya. Dan ada orang lain yang juga mengagetkanku sedemikian rupa. "Jehova?! What the bloody hell are you guys doing down here?"

"Always a pleasure, William." kata John tersenyum menghampiriku.

"John? Wait—and Luke also? and Jehova?! Come here, give us a hug!" teriak Thomas senang. Boy, we could not have been more happy than this. "Woo! Luke, how's it going in West Suisse?!" kata Simon. "Aw, you lads didn't bring us any gift!" sahut Levi juga. Benedict juga tertawa menghampiri.

"Haha! Still as strong as ever, eh mate?" kata Luke memegang lenganku. Knew it. He's been working out."You just want to be praised, doesn't you?" kataku tersenyum. "You know, lad's been bulking all year 'round." kata Jehova memegang lengan Luke. I fucking knew it. He's just like those massive lads at the northern side of our beloved country—they all dump protein and shit blood.

"You have been working hard." kata Messias menghampiri Prophet di belakang kami.

"Kau mungkin menyadari mulutku masih bekerja, Messias." balas Prophet.

"Your muscle too, old man. I know you're carrying a gun somewhere."

"Yes. Precisely, in my big, massive cock. Come and join the party—don't be an arsehole."

"Okay. Good to see you have some humour left." kata Messias, seraya mereka berdua menghampiri kami yang memeluk satu sama lain seperti alumni universitas bertahun-tahun lalu. "Like I said, Messias. My mouth still works." katanya berjalan pelan. "You know, that probably didn't come out like what you would think if you said it like that."

"Hm. What do you mean?" kata Prophet berhenti melangkah.

"Nevermind that. Carry on, old man." balas Messias menggelengkan kepala.

"Lads!" kata Messias memecah pesta singkat kita. "The reunion's done. Your euphoria will be noted well, but let's cut to the chase here, shall we?" lanjutnya berdiri di tengah-tengah kami semua. "Apa maksudmu, Prophet?" tanya Messias mendekat—tiba-tiba, kita semua melingkari Prophet. "You come to me with your motive, Messias. To kill James. Well," katanya menundukkan kepala, "That's not an easy feat. That's a suicide mission—a death wish." tukasnya lagi seraya melihat Messias.

"You said that you've done it before. Not a suicidal person, I see that." jawab Messias.

"You were right. And Luke, John—even the glorified Jehova will join you."

"Never heard of these guys, actually." kata Messias bernada merendahkan.

"Well, you weren't there when we were in academy." timpal Luka. "Yeah—actually, that applies to us all." kataku menambahkan. "Jehova adalah, yah, anggap saja—Messias pada jaman kita." jawab Thomas juga.

"Well, are you?" tanya Messias sedikit tersenyum.

"I didn't make the nickname myself, that's my answer." jawab Jehova tenang.

"Jolly well, then." kata Messias mengangguk dan melihat Prophet. "Well, the thing is, Messias," kata Prophet tenang, "You will not make the decision—who he is, what he's doing, what in charge of what. That's mine now, boy." katanya dengan suara berat.

And I can see both of their egos bursting into this very thin air of ours.

"Shut it then, both of you." kata Luke menyela. "I've been particularly thankful for you, old man—but Messias didn't know none of our plans. And vice versa. I suggest we have a crash meeting." lanjutnya lagi, meredakan tensi di antara mereka berdua. "He's right. Shove it." jawab Thomas. I knew it—these two mates of mine is the wisest of each team. Maybe James really did a careful planning for us in terms of putting who in which.

"Jadi, bagaimana?" kata Benedict tiba-tiba. He's not the only one confused.

"I suggest we take a nap. You're all exhausted, is not it?" kata Jehova.

"Staggeringly. So...which room?" kata Simon tidak sabar.

"One floor above. The east wing is our place to crash, so I suggest you took the west." kata Jehova lagi, menunjuk ke atas. You know, you can really tell an expensive house if it has the word "wings". So much for my cockroach-riddled apartment. "We'll be carrying on, then." kata Simon lagi. "Carry on, as you should." jawab Jehova mengangguk.

"Be seeing you tomorrow, lads." kata John.

"Well, we aren't going anywhere." kataku tersenyum lebar. Messias's apartment floor was as hard as a bloody steel nails. "We shall take this topic tomorrow, then." kata Prophet. "Setuju." balas Messias.

They are so hell-bent on discussing this thing, all of a sudden. Behind each of our own stories, I'm sure they have a lot of things to say. They are as ambitious as a lion preying it's prey, when it comes to assassinate this leader of ours. But we are assassins, which is why these kind of ambitions do seems a little fishy.

Oh well, off to sleep then, pikirku sembari menuju ke tangga besar di tengah-tengah ruangan ini.
