Chapter 10: Plan B

Avery smiled as she folded Jane’s clothes. Her friend really needed to change her wardrobe. All of her clothes were short and slutty. If she was planning to date a decent guy, she needed decent clothes.

“We should probably go to the mall. Your clothes are so…”

She was cut off when Jane showed her the new look. “Does this make me look smart?”

Avery smiled and nodded, “You look decent, babe. I think you should start wearing these kinds of clothes.” Jane sighed and sat on the bed.

“I don’t know, Ave. Good guys aren’t really my thing. They say smart things that I don’t understand. They make me feel like I’m stupid.”

Avery turned to her friend who looked sad, “No, silly. You just feel like that because you know he is smart. You told me to be myself with Carson, right? Why don’t you do that? Talk about the things that interest you. You are a wonderful woman, Jane. You are smart and you are amazing. Don’t settle for less.”

Avery couldn’t change her bestfriend’s outlook in life. She couldn’t stop Jane from believing in love but maybe Avery could help her find a decent man. While she knew it would be hard for Jane to find someone who would never break her heart, maybe somewhere out there, someone would take care of her even if things get rough. Someone who wouldn’t abuse her like what her dad did to her mom.

When Jane finished preparing for her date, Avery decided to go to her apartment. She decided to walk home to clear her mind off things. She then remembered her new plan with Carson. She then dialed a specific number. In just a few moments, the call was answered.

“Hello? Have you finally decided to take my offer?” Mark sounded happy with the sudden call. Even she couldn’t see him, she could imagine his face.

“I am but I just want to confirm which company.” She didn’t want to sound demanding but she wouldn't take the offer if it was not the company she wanted. She looked at the trees as she walked by. The night was peaceful and she couldn’t help but admire her surroundings. She couldn’t remember the last time she did this.

“To be honest, the opening was only in one company. Are you familiar with Lee Technology?”

Avery’s eyes widen. She tried to hide the smile on her face but she cannot contain it. What are the odds? How could she get this lucky?

“Yes. I am.”

“Good. They are asking for an assistant so maybe you would be interested? I can recommend you but you still need to take the exam.”

She smirked. She was confident that she could ace it. If she got the job, her plan would work. This was her last straw. If she still won’t get his attention, she could just keep the job. It was a win-win situation for Avery.

“Thank you, Mark.”

“You helped us a lot so I want to help you too. This way, you won’t have to meet guys like John.”

She chuckled, “That’s so thoughtful of you.”

“You remind me of my daughter. I don’t want her to be like that.”

Avery stopped. She wished all fathers were like Mark. Someone who would think of the future of their daughter and not just leave them whenever it was convenient for him.

She smiled, “She won’t. She has you and her mom.”

It was not like Avery didn’t have a good foundation. Her mom raised her well that was why she got into the university she wanted and that was why she loved helping other people.

The Lee Technology building was near GigaPhones. When Avery stepped out of the cab, she didn’t feel nervous at all. In fact, she was excited. She wore her best business attire and curled her hair. She looked like a professional.

She walked inside the building and asked where she could take the exam. Surprisingly, there were two of them who would be taking the test. The other candidate was a man who looked like a nerd. He has this huge glasses that covered most of his face. His suit looked old and worn out.

He smiled upon seeing her enter the room. She smiled back. If this guy was a genius, it would be the end of her plan. She sat next to him and they watched as the interviewer gave them their exams. When Avery saw the questionnaire, she felt at ease.

She knew all the answers. It was really worth it that she read a lot of books during her free time. But what bothered her was that the other candidate was happy with how the exam looked like.

“Let’s do well.” he said with a low husky voice.

Avery smiled and got her pen. She had to ace this exam, no matter what. After an hour, she finished the exam. The other candidate still looked happy. Avery knew thinking too much about it wouldn’t help. She gave the interviewer the paper.

This was not the first job exam Avery took. Some of her ex-partners asked her to work in their company and she always passed but she would leave after realizing that they would just require her to be in the company to give them pleasure.

If she got into Lee Technology, this would be her first job. She felt excited and confident.

After a few days, Carson was told that the new assistant would come that day. He looked forward to it since the workload had been too much for him to handle. He prepared himself by fixing his suit. He walked to the lobby to greet the new assistant when he stopped.

In front of him was a beautiful woman wearing a tight black dress with a blazer. She wore high heels and her hair was tied. She had a confident and powerful aura that he was familiar with.

“Hi, Carson. We meet again.” Avery smiled.
