Ballroom Waltz, Failure?

Act 3/4. Failure?

St. Clair Ballroom, Cleveland(Again, Just inspiration. Not the actual place, so please don't nitpick)

The ride from the mansion had been relatively quiet. Nadia had tried to start up a conversation, but Alex was looking outside of the window, ignoring her.

They had successfully entered the Ballroom. There were many guests, some of the most influential people in the city had gathered to interact with the senator. The appearance of someone from the Grey family had been unexpected, especially along with the child sensation Nadia Silver. All of a sudden, they were the centre of attention and Alex was also a part of this, considering that he was the one that had arrived with the both of them.

"Excuse me. Can I ask you for your name?"

A girl approached him, probably of the same age as him.

"Alex Curran. A pleasure to meet you."

He responded nobly, with his English accent on full display.

The girl blushed. Alex was internally sighing, but hi smile was on full display on the outside.

"Mona Allen, A pleasure to meet you too."

She looked around, and asked him,

"May I have this dance?"

The target hadn't arrived yet, and the event had already started. He could spare a few minutes. Both of his guides were busy 'Socializing' so it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

The music started. Alex didn't recognize the music, but Mona was quick to point out the name of the song.

"Chopin-Waltz op 70, number 2. A beautiful song."

Alex was surprised. By the looks of it, she was knowledgeable about music.

But just after he thought this, she did something completely unladylike. She pulled him up from his seat, and said,

"Come on! Let's do this!"

The sudden burst of energy was unexpected, but not unwelcomed. For some reason, She was extremely eager, and Alex just couldn't get himself to refuse her.

The dance started. Alex had trained with his mother in etiquette, so Waltz was actually a few of the things that he had actually worked hard to learn. He was by no means a master, but he wasn't a rookie either.

Alex and Mona started their dance while keeping it limited to slow waltz for now. The song was of low tempo, so they decided to take it slow.

When they began, everyone was focused on their own steps. Claudia noticed Alex because she wasn't participating in the dance as of now, but Nadia was too engrossed in talking to one of the directors that had decided to take this moment to recite a script to her.

As the song went on, Alex and Mona kept following the beat, and their sync was impeccable. People started to pay attention to the, seeing how well they were able to match each other's steps. Alex was genuinely enjoying himself, which was a rare occasion for him. When he practised with his mother, he always felt like she was better than him, and she had to always take charge while they were dancing because of this.

Alex was feeling that for the first time, he was dancing with an equal. Mona was struggling to match his elegant steps. He wasn't a master at controlling his steps according to the tempo, which Mona was a specialist at. So she was trying to follow his steps, but he was following her flow.

Mona was feeling the same thing. She had never been as good as her parents, who were professional ballroom dancers. Going from one Partner to another, she was always trying to find that one person who could carry her pace more elegantly. But so far, she hadn't been able to find that person. But Alex was different. Not only was he more elegant than her, but he was also patient enough to control his pace to be in perfect sync with her.

By this point, everyone was watching them. Mona's parents, other guests, Claudia and even Nadia.

The song was a very unique one, changing its beat irregularly while keeping it consistent enough to feel as if the tune is perfect because of those irregularities. Alex and Mona took full advantage of this and made sure to make the beat theirs.

And so, the song ended. Mona was really happy today. This was probably the most fun she had ever experienced while waltzing, and she wanted this dance to go on forever.

Alex was not feeling the same emotions as her, because his target had entered the Ballroom. His focus had been completely diverted.

Alex bowed at her and smiled. He said,

"I enjoyed every moment of that. It was a pleasure to have you as my partner."

Mona blushed again. This time, her heartbeat was audible to her own ears.

"Likewise. If you wouldn't mind, can I have another dance?"

Alex wanted to agree, but he couldn't. It was time for action, and he couldn't afford any diversions.

"Micah! Time to meet your maker!"

For a moment, Alex froze. He was staring at the person that had shouted at the target, and he felt his entire world turn upside down.

"Elias Schmid."

He took out a gun, which was a surprise and a shock for everyone present, but Alex was grinding his brain like crazy. There has to be a way to change this situation.

"Quick! Everyone get down!"

He was the first person to react. No one else could be allowed to get hurt. Why? Because Alex couldn't think clearly and just decided that it would be important, without any reason. Reflexive behaviour due to panic.

Everyone heeded his words, and Alex decided to approach his target. Micah was calm because his two bodyguards were at high alert, so Alex had to work fast.

"Is this going to be a failure?"

Claudia thought to herself while crouching down.
