Alex thought that Bella was too afraid to walk in the darkness, truth to be told he himself did not understand how they both ended up here when they were in the hospital. The last thing he remembered was they both were at the bench and he slept in her lap and after that when he woke up they were here.

He could only decide that it was another plan of his uncle. But then where was this palace? It was so dark and spooky. If he did not know any better he would think that it was a haunted house of an actual place where ghosts exist.
