// THIS IS AN OLD CHAPTER. THE NEW CHAPTERS ARE IN VOLUME 2. YOU CAN READ THESE CHAPTERS IF YOU WANT SOME INSIGHT ON WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN LATER BUT SOME EVENTS CAN BE DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW CHAPTERS.
Today is the first day of the school year and I am upstairs in the entrance hall to observe the first-year selection ceremony.
Nothing really happened during the rest of the holidays. I called Lana every day until she finally answered after the sixth day. From what the healers told her; she was very lucky to get by without a scratch. She was ten meters away when one of the gifts exploded, sending her flying like a rag doll. I kept calling her every day to entertain her, she was not allowed to leave her bed for two weeks while she was recovering from the shock.
No one told me the status of the investigation into the incident. I tried to use my level four agent status to get some Infos, but Quahog is hiding them.
But all that didn't stop Grandmother and her new husband from going on their honeymoon until the start of the school year. They spent almost a month and a half exploring the French capital and the surrounding countryside. Mom left her credit card with Grandma so she could spend money without a care, but she almost had a heart attack when she saw the account statement.
Now, I'm in Ilvermorny, and it's all behind me. It's time for a calm and peaceful year without dark mages or death threats. I look at the newcomer, a young Asian boy with a strand of hair dyed blue. The Thunderbird flaps its wings when he stands in the center of the room.
"Mike Hoang, Thunderbird." A professor whose name I do not know is writing down the results of the choices.
He goes up to join the students of his house. Those of mine don't really approach me, some give me curious looks. I hear others murmur among themselves wondering who I am but no one speaks to me among the horned snakes.
"Sean, over here." I turn to see who is calling me. I bump into Kayla Martin, Samael's girlfriend.
"Kayla? What are you doing here?" She tries to be discreet which is easy with her small size. She's barely taller than a first-grader.
"Hush, there is a problem with Samael." She wants me to follow her, and we walk towards a cell in the wall a little away from the others.
"Did something happen to Samael?" Kayla looks upset.
"I don't know. Ever since he got those damn letters, he had nightmares about when he was a kid. Just the other day he woke up screaming. He cast a spell that set one of the curtains on fire."
"Oh, and how do you know that." A smirk takes shape on my lips as Kayla turns red like a tomato.
"I ... but ... That's not the point. I'm really worried. He doesn't want to tell me anything because he thinks I'm a fragile little thing that needs to be taken care of, but I know he's not feeling good and he starts to be distant from everyone. I don't know what to do anymore. He refused to talk with his other friends about it. You are the last one who has not tried yet to convince him to tell me what it's in those goddamn letters. " She begins to sob in rage and slides down the wall to bring her knees to her shoulders.
"Slow down, it's going to be okay. Don't worry, I'll get to the bottom of this even if I have to crack his head to find out what's bothering him." I try to play a funny tone by mimicking a saw cutting a skull, which makes her smile between sobs. "You should go back to your house before you are caught here. From what I've been told, we are not allowed to be in the area of another house during the ceremony. "She nods and I help her up.
What did Samael read that make him mad to the point that he's keeping it away from Kayla? He didn't seem so distant the last time I saw him on vacation.
It took me four days to get my hands on him. This Friday is the newcomers' welcome party at The Fox's hole. I'm going with Lana, Kayla, and Samael. I don't really know what to expect but it will be fun.
When we arrive in the room the music was going full blast. People were dancing or sitting at a table. Some students had already drunk a little too much and railed against a barmaid at the counter. It's also one of the first times that I don't see everyone wearing their blue and red uniforms. Everyone wore the clothes they liked in a relaxed atmosphere.
I have two goals tonight. First of all, making new friends, which is not as easy as I would have thought. Some students asked me who I was, but transfers are so rare that it is difficult to integrate into groups that have already been formed. And the second objective is to get the truth concerning the letters of Samael.
"So, by what do we start? "Lana smiles and pulls me by the sleeve to lead me to what serves as a dance floor in the center of the room. People were dancing to an electro track. Lana was wearing an outfit that looked a lot like the one that she was wearing when I saw her for the first time. A white top with jeans shorts and black sneakers. We start to dance; I don't want to take things too far tonight. I still feel bad about Daphne. But Lana doesn't hear it that way, she comes closer and closer. Her scent is intoxicating and makes my head spin.
"Are you using a love potion?" I whisper in her ear but it's a mistake because the smell becomes stronger.
She puts her arms around my neck. "Um no, not a love potion. It's a perfume of attraction, it helps to be noticed ... by someone you like but it doesn't change feelings. It just warms up the mood somehow. " This girl is driving me completely crazy, but I'm not really in the mood tonight.
"I'm sorry but I just broke up and I don't want to do this now. We can keep dancing if you want but you have to behave." I smile before releasing my aura a little to annoy her.
Several girls turn around on the dance floor and look in my direction. Lana turns red and sticks to me even more.
"I don't know what you just did but it's not fair play!" Her hands stop on my buttocks and I feel them move up under my t-shirt.
"Uh, Lana, I just wanted to tease you a bit but I'm serious. It would feel like I'm betraying my ex if we did this now." I recall my veela aura as much as possible and put Lana at an arm's length distance of me as she pouted. "Come on, let's go get something to drink instead." I extend my arm to invite her to follow me, but she takes my hand and pulls me towards the counter.
Lana heads straight for the bartender, whom I saw turn away some drunk students. A pretty red-haired girl in a black top and army pants with thick black boots.
"Hi Kassi, four beers please."
"Normal, catch-up, or late evening."
"Catch up, please. Ah yes, this is my friend Sean Bones."
"The Magiphone guy? Nice to meet you, I'm Cassandra Nightgale. Kassi for friends. It's weird to see you here, rumors say you are supposed to be a haughty anti-social who refuses to mix with other people. "
"Let's say it's complicated to mix with groups of friends that have been formed for a long time, but I am trying my best."
"Glad to hear that, the first one is a shot." She hands me the beer she just served and pours another one. We bring our glasses to our lips and start to empty them. It only takes me three seconds to get to the bottom of mine, but Cassandra is the first to empty it. What the fuck? How strong is this beer? I can still feel the alcohol burning the back of my throat.
"What the hell? Are you sure it was a beer?"
"It's more like five beers if you want to be precise. Lana asked for some catch-ups so I served you blond suicides. It's a beer that we make here by magically concentrating the beer so that it has five times its volume of alcohol. " A spell that allows you to concentrate liquids, it is worth taking a look at.
"Is there any way you can show me that spell?" Cassandra laughs.
"Once Lana dumps you, I'll show you everything you want, handsome."
"Hey, don't touch him, this one is mine." Lana holds me by the waist and Cassandra laughs before turning to serve the other customers.
We end up finding Samael and Kayla sitting alone at a table. Samael seems to be brooding his thoughts at the bottom of his glass.
"Well then guys, you don't seem to be enjoying yourself." Kayla gives me sad looks, silently begging me to intervene. "Do you want to play a little drinking game, boys against boys, and girls against girls?"
"I'm not in the mood, Sean. Leave me alone please." If being gentle doesn't work, maybe it's time to do something more muscular.
"Okay, you're ruining the mood, we're going to let some steam off outside." I grab him by the collar of his t-shirt and drag him on the floor, knocking him off his stool at the same time. "Don't wait for us girls, we're going to chat a bit among boys."
I pull him out as he struggles. Once outside he manages to free himself, tearing the top of his t-shirt which remains in my hand.
"Damn, are you crazy, Bones? What's your problem?"
"Finally, you react, we were fed up with the corpse barely able to say hello act. Did you see how Kayla is feeling? She came to me crying to find out what is bothering you. So now you have two choices, or you empty your bag while drinking a good beer, or I'll make you spit it out with your teeth as a bonus. "
It does not take more to change Samael's state of mind, I see the colors of his emotions going from sadness and incomprehension to anger. He rushes at me and hits me with a punch that breaks my nose. Blood runs down my face and stains the top of my t-shirt red. I take this opportunity to push my left fist into his ribs. I have to be careful with my strength, if I punch him with too much power, I might kill him.
He gets up and tackles me. My back hits the ground hard as he hovers over me and starts to punch my face. My fist hits him in the stomach, and he vomits on the floor next to me. I take the opportunity to throw him back and free myself. I put the last punch to his temple which sends him to take a nap.
My face is swollen in several places, but I can already feel the wounds closing. On the other hand, my nose is in the process of repairing itself askew and I have to broke it again to put it right. Several students watched the scene, not understanding what was going on, but no one seemed to be looking for a teacher. Guess it must be an implicit rule that what happens in the bar stays in the bar.
I sit right next to the front door and put Samael, still unconscious, next to me.
"You, give me your beers." I call on a boy who must not be more than twelve years old and who had nothing to do with these beers in hand. The kid walks over and hands me his two goblets, fearing my reactions, as I place a Galleon in his hand. "Go buy yourself some candy with that instead."
I turn to face the still unconscious Samael and pull out my wand. "Enervate". Samuel wakes up and touches his sore jaw.
"Damn, you didn't have to take my jaw apart."
"No, but that wouldn't have been so funny. So, do you feel in a chatty mood now or shall we dance again?" I smile, my mouth still full of blood and Samael explodes with laughter interrupted by a small moan of pain.
"We're going to chat." I hand him one of the beers and he drinks it all at once before setting the empty glass down next to him. "A few days before class resumed, I started receiving letters. It was weird because I usually never get anything except scholarship papers from MACUSA. But there, the person who signed the letters is my mother, which is impossible because she is long dead. Cancer must have killed her years ago. In the letter, there is an address where I must go to in New York if I want to find her. But I don't know what I want to do. I want it to be true and for her to become the silly and loving mother before her cancer again, but on the other hand, I'm afraid it will just be a bad joke. "
It's weird, there is too much detail in his story for it to be a simple joke, and besides who could send this kind of mail here. One would have to be an agent of MACUSA to have access to Samael's story and know that he is here.
"Look, don't do anything right now. This is a weird story and I think you should tell the Headmaster about it. He'll probably know where these letters come from." I hope he takes my advice.
