Just Friends

WARNING! The start of the story has a bit of a sadness inducing scene. You've been warned.

When it was time to sleep I had so many things on my mind. I let out a yawn and my eyes suddenly became heavy. Despite being so tired I was reluctant to sleep since I would always wake up in the morning crying. Unfortunately, my body didn't care about this as it gradually was shutting down from drowsiness. I couldn't help myself from blinking and each time I did so the blinking would last a bit longer until my eyes didn't open again.

Against my own will, I had fallen asleep. My own body had just beaten me into submission. During my sleep I found myself drifting away into a dream. In this dream, I was looking at a kid seeming hopeless while two adults were in a quarrel. What was strange about this dream was that I couldn't make out exactly the appearances of the kid nor the two adults. They were blurry, I struggled to even distinguish the sexes of the two adults. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that there were a man and a woman.

I couldn't even try and deduce a probable age for them. Their argument escalated resulting in the man pushing the woman to the ground. I shifted my attention to the kid as he let out a scream. He fell to his knees as he observed while despair consumed him. He began crying out while grasping his shirt. Watching this occur made me feel melancholy. I slowly approached the kid and touched him on the shoulder.

He looked up at me with a lifeless stare. Despite not being able to fully depict his appearance, I felt like he was familiar. His emotions filled my body and being overwhelmed by them tears began running down my face. That's when I woke up. I rushed to the mirror and saw tears running down my face. I concluded that this dream was the reason I keep waking up crying. Thoughts raided my mind as I came to this conclusion.

Instantaneously, my bedroom door had been opened. "Wake up Kenny dear, you have sch…" My mom instantly became inhibited as she saw me staring into the mirror crying. "Are you okay!" her shouting took me out of my trance. My mom became concerned about me but I didn't even know what that dream was so I didn't bother to tell her what happened. I wiped my tears away, thanked my mom and left the room. I rushed and prepared for school and left my house.

While walking to school, I thought of possible answers to all of my questions about that strange dream. I was so immersed I became oblivious to my surroundings. I can't remember how long I was walking for when it happened but I felt a sharp pull out of nowhere. I looked around to know what happened and behind me was Ayumi. "Look where you're walking!" she exclaimed while pointing ahead. If it wasn't for her I would have walked into traffic and possibly died.

"Oh hi Ayumi, thanks for helping me out there." As I smiled at her she had an expression of concern on her face. "What were you even thinking about that you weren't aware of your surroundings?" I began sweating. I didn't want her to get entangled with this mess so I decided not to tell her. "It's not important." "Ok… Do you want me to walk to school with you to ensure you don't get hurt like last time?" I was so captivated by her thoughtfulness from that gesture so I couldn't reject her offer.

"Sure, where do you want us to meet before heading school?" "You could wait outside my house, it's on the way to school anyway." We agreed and continued our conversation until we were in front of the school. Pleasantly surprising us was Samantha and Alexander. They were waiting for us outside the school. "Dude it's been literally only one day since you knew her and yet y'all already look like a couple." His comment made Ayumi inhibited from being uncomfortable. Quickly following, was a slap from Samantha.

"What was that for!" "That's now how you greet friends!" They bickered outside the gate. I looked back at Ayumi and I wanted to ease her from his discomfort. "You know he said we look like a couple but they're bickering like one." I whispered into her ear. She instantly burst out into laughter. Seeing her smile and laugh was way more satisfying than seeing her depressed or uneasy. Seeing us laugh together caused their quarrel to come to an end.

"How about I show Ayumi some of my favorite places in the school and you too hang out together." "Sure why not? My bro and I can hang out before school starts." "Do you mind going with Sam, Ayumi?" "Nope, not at all." I could hear a bit of reluctance in her voice but I didn't want to pry into her matters. "Great! Follow me Ayumi!" Samantha grabbed her by the arm and dragged her around the school. "They should have some fun together right?" Alexander stared me down intensely.

"Real talk. Do you have any feelings for that new girl? You two are quite close for only being acquainted for barely two days." "It's not like that. Yeah, she's pretty cute but I just see her as a friend. We met on the day before school restarted and sat in the same building for quite a while without knowing each other. When I saw how timid she was and how desperate she was to make a new friend how could I have turned her down?" "Fair enough, let's get to class bro."

Meanwhile, Samantha was finished with forcing Ayumi to follow her around the school so they began returning to class. "Hey, Ayumi. Can I ask you something?" "Sure." She timidly said. "How do you feel about Ken? You two seem awfully close." "Well, I guess he's a good friend. Despite only knowing him for a short while he helped me out very much. He became my first friend ever and now I don't feel alone anymore. So I'm grateful for him ." "Hmm, I see. Well, we should hurry to class because class is going to start soon." They began running to make it on time to class.
