HE'S JUST A CAT!

I headed out for my first day of work early. I needed to drop by at HR at 8.45am, sign the papers and then report at Mr Reid's office just before 9am.

I wore my best plaid grey suit and a white button up shirt. A simple long chain and matching watch completed the look. A dove grey pair of shoes, matching purse and I was ready to go.

Best foot forward girl! You've got this. At any rate, I didn't have anything to lose and everything to gain. I'll work hard, tread with caution, and show no fear, since Mr Reid had such a fierce reputation.

The HR manager, Ellen seemed nice enough. She was somewhat cold but professional and I supposed for her in such a large company, signing on a new employee was just another task in her day. After that she surprised me by walking me up to the CEO's office.

We reached before 9am and I had assumed she was going to orientate me before the CEO arrived, but she simply knocked on the door, adjusted her blouse, and entered with a suddenly brilliant smile. We entered a space with thick carpets and a few sleek desks. They were all unoccupied. As in completely new looking. The walls were floor to ceiling glass windows with a spectacular view of Gate City. All the walls in this office was made of glass too. There was a larger conference room on one side, and two smaller meeting rooms on the other.

Ellen didn't stop walking. Heading directly through the opened door to the glass room at the end, she stepped in, her smile never wavering. "Good morning, Mr Reid. The new assitant manager is here."

I decided the match her smile and greeting, "Good morning, sir. My name is Serene."

"Hn, it's really you." The man behind the desk said in a quiet growl. He stood up to meet us.

Oh, it was him.

Ellen passed him my file.

"You may leave, Ellen." The man said with the same unperturbed voice and expression. If your heart had turned to stone, would it spread to the other parts of you too?

"Ah..." Ellen blushed and bobbed her head up and down, "Yes, sir."

My new CEO was Clara's brother. Or the Captain of the Moon Bell Pack's Lycan Army. Or the tom cat who helped me do my laundry.

Altogether, I couldn't really place him as the terrifying boss that I read about on the forum, which only showed me that forum rumors was really as reliable as the weather forecast.

"Beta Harvey highly recommended you. I did not expect you to be female." Mr Reid said, "What is your relationship with him?"

He's just a cat. He's just a cat. He's just a cat. I won't be offended by a cat.

"We're just friends from college." I answered. Anyway, I was sure he would be able to smell that I was still a virgin. Apparently, wolves could. Just like they could smell out someone who was turned on, or having their menses. At least that's what the webnovels said.

I could smell the brand new box of fancy chocolates on him too. Oh wow, I suddenly had a craving for chocolate, the expensive type, in a box, with gold flakes on them and alcohol in them. Shilem used to buy them for me. I haven't eaten those for a long time. Want it in my mouth. Now.

And then he spoke, steel grey eyes never wavering, "I'm afraid I can't hire you for this position."

He's just a cat. He's just a cat. He's just a cat.

"Do you have anyone else?" I challenged.

Aunt Rosa used to have a black cat who walked the earth like he was an Egyptian god. "Such a vain and silly cat." Aunt Rosa would say.

He used to lie in the middle of the road outside our shop, and all the cars would drive around it.

If someone tied a dog outside one of our shops, it would sit itself just out of the leashed dog's reach and lick himself.

He was very picky with his food. Threw major tantrums whenever ignored, and attacked any man who tried to court Aunt Rosa.

But he would drink apple juice from my cup if I held it up to him, eat mango yogurt out of my spoon, and he liked when I shared my cheese sandwiches with him. He would always purr when I stroked his black silky fur.

When Clara's brother didn't answer me, I said, "You need help. I just left my last job to work here. Show me what you need done, and see if I can do it."

"That isn't the issue. Since Beta Harvey had recommended you, I have no doubt you are more than able." He said.

"Then what is the issue, Mr Reid?" I demanded.

"We have strict policies regarding relationships at work." Mr Reid informed me.

"Do not worry, Mr Reid, in my eyes, you are just a cat." I blurted out.

"A cat?" He asked. It seemed his face had become even stonier than before.

He's just a cat. He's just a cat. He's just a cat.

"Yes. A cat. We are completely different species. You do not have to worry about me." I explained.

He paused, "That was not what I meant."

"Then what did you mean, Mr Reid?" I asked.

His stony expression broke into a frown, "No, it is nothing. Do you know how to type?"

He's just a cat. He's just a cat. He's just a cat.

"Yes. I also know how to create spreadsheets, calculate ROI, research investments, and draft custom trade accounts proposals, and seeing that you have no secretary in your office, I can also file and organize, and keep your schedule updated until you get one." I flashed him one of my wide confident smiles, "Test me. You won't even notice I'm not a man."

"That would be impossible." He growled under his breath.

I laughed it off, like I always did, "I'll take it as a compliment."
