Trying Hard To Hate

Chapter Seven

Tunde got into his car and drove back to the office. Sophia might be acting all stubborn and not interested, but he knew she was definitely going to yield soon, not with the deal he has dangling in front of her. And if she doesn't take it, he will just have to make it juicer.

Throughout the rest of the day, he couldn't get himself to concentrate at work. He kept thinking about Sophia, and when he tried to get her off his mind and concentrate on work, her face flashes before his mind's eye.

He kept cursing and making mistakes in every thing he did. After two straight hours of trying to get work done to no avail, Tunde shut down his laptop and decided to go home.

"Are you leaving already sir?" Comfort his assistant asked him on his way out.

"Yes Comfort, I will finish up whatever is left for me to do, at home. I don't feel too well"

"Oh sorry Sir, would you like me to help you get any medication or something?"

"No, I will just go home and rest. Hopefully I will get better before tomorrow"

"Alright, see you tomorrow sir"

When Tunde got into his car, instead of heading to his apartment, he drove to the lounge where he usually hung out with his friends.

All through the day, Sophia kept cursing and swearing at everything and anyone who got in her way. All thanks to that dickhead Tunde, her mood has been ruined for the day. Imagine him telling her she wasn't beautiful, who does he think he is? He should count himself lucky she was in a good mood before coming to see him, if not she would have emptied her glass of water on his head the moment those words left his lips. Oh those lips though, they really did look kissable.

"Concentrate Sophia, what is your problem? That guy called you ugly, and here you are thinking of kissing him" she smacked herself on her head as she paced her bedroom. "Wait, why am I even bothered about what he thinks about me? It's not like what he thinks is of any relevance to me, Sophia stop thinking about that loser" she decided to take off her clothes and go have her bath. Hopefully a warm bubble bath will do her some good.

When Sophia came out of the bathroom, she was surprised to find her mother seated on her bed smiling.

"Mother, what are you doing in my room?" She knew that smile, whenever her mother had that smile on her face, it was either she was up to something mischievous, or she was looking for something to gossip about.

"Can't I come into my daughter's room again? Must you interrogate me every time you see me in your room?" Her tried feigning anger as she spoke, but Sophia knew it was all fake.

"I'm sorry mother, I didn't mean it that way"

"It's okay my dear, come have a seat" her mother patted the bed smiling. Sophia put on a robe and sat down on the bed.

"Emm I heard you had a date with Tunde this afternoon?"

Sometimes Sophia wonders how her mother manages to get work done at the office, and still have time to be listening to gossips. So many times, Sophia has tried to know who always keeps her informed on everything, but she decided to give up when she couldn't find out. Because whoever it was, still went and told her mother she was nosing around, trying to find out who gives her mother information.

"Mother! Who told you that?"

"Does it matter? Did you or did you not go on a date with him?"

"Yes but..."

"Chai.... Sophia you told me you wanted to go to the supermarket. I knew something was fishy"

"No mother it's not like that, we didn't go on a date, it was just a meeting and..."

"Leave all those plenty English you are speaking, tell me how did it go? He is handsome abi?"

"Mother I don't know what you are talking about, because the guy I met is a far cry from being handsome" Sophia knew she was lying, because she not only thinks Tunde is handsome, but also incredibly sexy, especially when he was trying to look serious.

"Sophia oooo"

Sophia immediately stood up as her mother screamed her name. "What happened? Mother you almost gave me a heart attack. Why would you scream my name like that"

"Why won't I scream your name? When you just zoned out?"

Sophia sighed and sat down back on the bed, she was doing it again, fancying and liking things about that guy, when she should be hating him.

"So are you going to marry him?" Her mother asked expectantly.

Sophia turned to look at her mother who was smiling waiting for her to answer. Hasn't she been listening to her at all? She hates the guy. Or that's what she wants her mother to believe, but still she is not going anywhere near that guy ever again, talk more of marrying him.

"Mother, I don't like that guy. There is no way we are going to get married"

"But you just met him only once, don't you think it's too early to judge? At least meet with him again before you can now decide if you like him or not"

"There's no way I'm meeting with that guy again, absolutely no way" Sophia got up from the bed and sat down in front of her dressing mirror and started applying serum on her face.

"Sophia my beloved daughter" her mother got from the bed and stood behind her, placing her hands on Sophia's shoulders, "even if you don't want to do it for yourself, do it for your father's legacy. Don't allow what your father worked so hard to build, go down the drain. Please"

Sophia looked in the mirror and saw pains in her mother's eyes, she knew her mother was desperate to save their father's legacy by all means. But what about her own happiness, what of her own plans for her life? Doesn't any of those matter? Is she not allowed to live the life of her dreams? Is she supposed to give up all of those just so she could save her father's legacy?
