My First Mission Starts Now

There's a big building, it's similar to a castle but the structure is a bit different. Trees are surrounding the building and birds are singing. There's a wraparound porch with tables and chairs scattered, the door to the building swings open and there's a group of people running up to me. "Welcome to the fifth division." They all say in unison.

A girl steps out from the group and smiles. "Welcome, my name is Trinity and I'll be showing you around and explaining how everything works. I'll also be preparing you for the next mission."

"Oh okay, why am I already being taken on a mission?"

She's silent for a moment the others as well. "I can't say, we'll have to wait until Captain Rin comes he'll be able to explain more." She grabs my hand and drags me inside; she shows me everything from my room to the lunchroom to the lounge. As she gives me a tour I get told about the chores, everyone rotates and they have to be done first thing in the morning. I won't have to do any chores until after we get back from the mission.

We walk past the garden and I notice Rins escorts are talking outside, just as I start walking towards them Trinity grabs me. "We're not supposed to talk to them unless Rin is here or it's an emergency."

"Why? I talked to them on my way to the capital."

"You were with Rin. They're not necessarily part of the team, they stay here unless Rin goes somewhere without us. They live here but they don't do anything, if all of us go on a mission they stay here to protect the hideout. They eat in the lunchroom but not with us, they have their room but under the building."

"Under the building?"

"Yep, the basement. Oh, they all have magic very strong magic."

"Why are they escorts then? Why aren't they captains or knights like us?"

"They didn't want, they'd rather be escorts or I guess the better term would be bodyguard or assistances. They used to be knights but got promoted; they could either be second in command, a captain, or an escort. Every captain has their group usually between fifteen and twenty men and women. Every captain treats their escorts differently; some treat them like servants, while others like Rin treat them with respect, he talks to them and as you know will occasionally take them on solo missions."

"Like going to his village."

"Yep." She then takes my hand and starts dragging me somewhere else. "This is my room if you ever need anything you're more than welcome to drop by." I nod and hear people talking in the distance, they sound excited. "It must be the captain, let's go see him!" She grabs my hand and we start running to the entrance.

Everyone's lined up and Rin is standing in front of them, as soon as he sees us he looks disappointed. "Not here for even a full day and you're already late for your first meeting." Huh? He sounds serious.

"Captain!" Trinity runs up to him and tries to hug him but he sticks his arm out blocking her, she frowns. "Forgive her, it's my fault. I was just giving her a detailed tour of the hideout and we lost track of time."

"Come here Skye, everyone else line up!" They do as he says and I stand next to him. "Team, this is Skye our recruit. Sadly, she's our only recruit. Make her feel welcome, she's a childhood friend so please be nice. Right then, you'll be at the end next to Marx." I nod and stand in line Rin paces back and forth muttering something to himself. "Has Trinity informed you about the mission?"

"No."

He glares at Trinity while shaking his head and she looks down. "Well, then I'll get right down to it. A couple of weeks ago the king received a mysterious letter, and in that letter were threats of war. There is only one thing we know from this letter, whoever is trying to start this war is going after the artifacts. The king has ordered all six of the divisions to guard these artifacts. Zero, Jordan, and our division will be the first ones to guard; we'll be there for a week and then switch. There is no indication of how long we'll be rotating. We leave in an hour; we'll be heading for the dormant volcano. Everyone clear on what our mission is?"

"Yes, Sir." Everyone says at once.

"Good, then start packing you have one hour." He dismisses everyone, but I stay where I am. Rin comes up to me and grabs my hands. "Are you okay? I know this is a lot, I would've told you what was going on before you took the test, but I was not able to say anything until now."

"I'm fine; I'm a bit excited actually. What about everyone else and the tests?"

"The other three captains will be taking care of it. We should've canceled it but Zero and his father wouldn't allow it, and since their divisions are one of the best the king wouldn't listen to anyone else."

"I know Zeros division is ranked third, but what about his dad?"

"His dads' division is ranked first and as of last month, Zeros is second. As far as the other captains, Lucy is ranked third she and Zero switched, Stella is ranked fourth, and Jordan is ranked fifth. Then there's us. Enough about that though, you should start packing."

"What are the artifacts?"

"It's what remains of The Great King."

"The Great King?"

"Yes, he was the king of the gods before he waged a war on the demons, humans, and other gods."

"So, the stories are true? They're not just stories?"

"….you need to get ready we leave in half an hour." Rin walks towards the garden leaving my questions unanswered. Maybe Trinity knows, maybe he's joking because he feels bad about sending me out on a mission already.

I go to Trinity's room and knock on her door flies open; she's sitting on her bed brushing her hair. "What can I help you with?"

"These artifacts that Rin was talking about, are they really what remains of the king of the gods?"

She looks at me hard before smiling. "Is that what he said? He was joking; they're just very valuable artifacts that have belonged to the kingdom for centuries. Have you finished packing were going to be leaving shortly?"

"Oh guess I should get ready, thanks for everything."

Once in my room I take a couple of minutes to let everything soak in, why was Trinity looking at me like that? Did I say something wrong? I look around my room and notice that there are a couple of bags, they're bigger than mine so they should fit everything I need for the mission. A bell rings and I can hear Rin yelling in the distance for everyone to meet at the stables in ten minutes. Since I have everything packed I can probably head there now.

As I approach the stables it's dark not a lot of lighting and I hear someone talking.

"Did you forget who you're talking to?! I am well aware of everything that happened I don't need you to remind me." That sounds like Rin and he sounds angry. I hear footsteps approach and I jump scared.

"Why are you eavesdropping on the captain?" A tall bulky guy walks up to me inches from my face; he examines me before Rin pushes him back.

He looks at me before approaching the guy. "Personal space, Cam. You still need to work on that." He nods. After a few minutes, the rest of the team is at the stables. "We're going to the dormant volcano, we'll arrive there just as the sun is setting, once we get there we'll figure out who will be on night watch.

Everyone nods in unison before getting their horses, Trinity shows me mine and I hop on. She instructs me to stay in the middle of formation in case we run into trouble.

We're off, Rin and three others lead, while Marx and I are behind them, and Trinity and the rest are behind us.
