Steve's Grandma Comes Over

It was Sunday, February 17, 2002. Steve and Kevin were sitting in the living room enjoying their Sunday afternoon. They were playing Madden together since the football season ended a couple of weeks ago.

Then Kevin Sr. and Anna came into the living room to make a huge announcement. "Guys, we have some exciting news to share with you.", said Anna. Then Steve paused the game, and both boys were all ears.

"Alright, what's the big announcement?", said Steve. "Your grandmother is coming over to stay with us for a couple of weeks.", said Kevin Sr. "Alright, cool. Which grandmother?", said Kevin.

"Your father's mother which is also my mother-in-law.", said Anna. "Alright, awesome.", said Steve. "Why is she staying over? What's the big occasion?", said Kevin.

"It turns out she's moving into a bigger house. She sold her old home and wants to move into a nicer one. Until then, she's gonna spend about two weeks here with us while she's still in the moving process.", said Kevin Sr. "Well, I'm happy for her. We'd love to have her over.", said Steve. "And she's gonna be sleeping in the guest room during that time.", said Anna.

"Well, we just wanted to give you the news right now since she's coming here tonight.", said Kevin Sr. "So, all of you boys better be on your best behavior while she's here.", said Anna. "And I guess that's all we have to say for now. You two can continue playing your game.", said Kevin Sr.

That evening, the whole family was in the living room waiting to welcome Steve's grandma into their household. She gonna turn 69 years old that year. "Mom, Dad, I see a taxi cab outside. That might be her.", said Kevin. Then Steve's parents looked outside.

"Yep, that's her.", said Anna. Then Kevin Sr. unlocked the front door. "Alright everybody, let's all welcome her with loving arms.", said Kevin Sr.

"She has entered the apartment complex.", said Anna while looking outside. Then Steve's grandma walked up the apartment complex stairs and walked to Steve's front door. Then she knocked on Steve's front door.

Kevin Sr. opened the door, and there she was. "Hey mom, long time no see!", said Kevin Sr. "There's my handsome-looking young man!", said Steve's grandma.

Then Steve's dad and grandma hugged. "I'll hang up your coat, hat, scarf, and gloves for you mom.", said Kevin Sr. "Thank you, son. I appreciate it.", said grandma.

Then Kevin Sr. did what he just said previously. "Hey, mother-in-law! It's been such a long time since we've seen each other as well.", said Anna. "Hello there my daughter-in-law!", said Steve's grandma.

Then Steve's mom and grandma hugged. "I and my husband will help you with the rest of your belongings.", said Anna. Kevin Sr. got done hanging up his mom's winter gear.

"Alright, we're both gonna go get the rest of your stuff mom. Why don't you say hi to your grandmother boys?", said Kevin Sr. Then Steve's parents helped out Steve's grandma with her belongings. "Hi.", said Kevin.

"And there's all my handsome young grandsons! Why don't you all come over and hug your grandma?", said Steve's grandma. Then all the boys did exactly that. "It's nice to see you again grandma. I just wanna know one thing. What's your reason for moving out of your old home?", said Steve.

"You know what? Why don't we get into detail about that story later on Steve?", said Steve's grandma. "Okay grandma.", said Steve. Moments later, Steve's parents came back upstairs with all of Steve's grandma's belongings that she decides to take with her for her temporary stay.

"Alright, now that that's taken care of, I'll show you to our guest room.", said Kevin Sr. "You have a guest room? Well, that's just wonderful. Well, let's go.", said Steve's grandma. Then Kevin Sr. directed his mom to the guest room.

Then Kevin Sr. and Steve's grandma were both in the guest room. Dexter walked right into the guest room. He had a big smile on his face while his tongue was hanging out.

Dexter saw Steve's grandma and put his front paws on her legs before falling back down again. Dexter did this a few times, and that was his way of saying hello to new guests. "And who is this sweet little dog?!", said Steve's grandma.

"Oh, that's Dexter. He's the new dog we took in last year. He's a Shih Tzu breed, and not even a year old yet.", said Kevin Sr. "Well, he's a friendly dog that's for sure.", said Steve's grandma. Then Dexter left the guest room.

Moments later, Steve's parents brought all of Steve's grandma's belongings into the guest room. "Alright mom, enjoy your stay here.", said Kevin Sr. "And if you need anything, you just let me or my husband know. Okay?", said Anna. "Okay, but it looks like I've got everything covered.", said grandma.

"Okay, great! Let's go honey.", said Kevin Sr. Then Anna left the guest room along with her husband. And both closed the door of the guest room.

The next day, I was hanging out at Steve's household after school. It was I, Steve, and Kevin in the living room that Monday afternoon. Then I suddenly noticed something was different.

"Hey, where's your babysitter guys? I don't see her anywhere.", I said. "The sitter got a couple of weeks off.", said Kevin. "Yeah, our grandmother is currently moving, so she's spending a couple of weeks here. As a result, she's going to be our temporary babysitter while both of our parents are at work.", said Steve.

"Got you.", I said. Then Steve's grandma heard an unfamiliar voice in the living room, so she left the guest room to go see who it was. Then Steve's grandma entered the living room and saw me there.

"Is he one of your friends' boys?", said Steve's grandma. "Yeah. This is Jamal.", said Steve. "He usually hangs out with us here.", said Kevin.

"Why don't you two introduce yourselves?", said Steve. "Good afternoon Steve's grandma. It's nice to meet you.", I said. "Well, it's nice to meet you too young man.", said Steve's grandma.

"Well, I just came to check up on you guys.", said Steve's grandma. "Alright grandma.", said Steve. Then Steve's grandma left the living room and went back to the guest room.

"Hey, how old is she anyway?", I said. "She was born in 1933. She'll be turning 69 years young this year.", said Steve. "What a coincidence. My grandmother was also born in 1933 on my mother's side. And she'll also be turning 69 this year.", I said.

"Well, she's our grandmother on our father's side.", said Kevin. "The last time I saw my grandmother was when we were moving from my old place to here just last year.", I said. Then I started having a flashback to the moment I last saw my grandmother.

***FLASHBACK***

And as I finished gathering all my belongings we went outside where my grandma was standing. She was 68 years of age. "I hope both of you will be able to still come and visit me.", said, grandma. "Don't worry, we will grandma.", I replied. "Thanks for all that you've done for us mom.", my mom said.

"You're more than welcome.", said, grandma. And as we got in the car after seeing my old residence one last time, my grandma was standing there. She said, "Call me and tell me about the new place.", said, grandma. "We will", said my mom. And then we drove away.

***FLASHBACK***

Then the flashback I had was over. "I just realized me and my mom still have yet to stop by and visit my grandmother. And I originally said we were gonna do just that.", I said. "Well, words are just words. Actions say way much more. You should start visiting your grandmother Jamal.", said Kevin.

"Yeah, you're right. Maybe in the summertime.", I said. "Well, where's the grandfather on your father's side?", I said. "He died back in '87.", said Steve.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.", I said. "Yeah, we never got to meet him. I wonder what it would've been like if we did get to meet him.", said Kevin. "My grandfather died before I was born too. On my mother's side.", I said.

"I'm gonna go heat us some Hot Pockets. You guys want any?", said Kevin. "Sure Kev.", said Steve. "Count me in for a Hot Pocket as well.", I said. Then Kevin went into the kitchen to go heat us some Hot Pockets.

It was now Monday night. Steve's parents came back from work. Anna came into the living room where the boys were sitting.

"So, how did it go after school with your grandmother as your temporary sitter. Were there any problems whatsoever?", said Anna. "None at all mom. Jamal came over, and that's when he and grandma finally met.", said Kevin. "Well, that's great! I think it's awesome that she got to meet one of your friends.", said Anna.

"Yep, pretty cool indeed. So, what's for dinner tonight?", said Steve. "Well, your father decided to head out and get some Little Caesars for all of us.", said Anna. "I like the sound of that.", said Kevin. "Great! We'll be eating real soon.", said Anna as she left the living room.

The next day after school, Kevin was sitting in the living room watching TV. And Steve was in the living room on the desktop computer browsing the web. "Dang it!", said Steve.

"Dang what Steve?", said Kevin. "There's this game I want that comes out on the 24th of this month for PlayStation 2, but I don't have enough allowance money.", said Steve. Then Steve's grandma came into the living room.

"Did I just hear you say you don't have enough allowance money sweetie?", said Steve's grandma. "Yes you did.", said Steve. "Well, here's some money to help you get the game you want. It's just a token of appreciation for you all giving me a place to stay while I'm in the process of moving.", said Steve's grandma.

Then Steve's grandma handed Steve some money. "Nice! Thank you so much grandma!", said Steve. Then Steve got up to hug his grandmother.

"Your so welcome my dear.", said Steve's grandma. "What about my grandma? I'm the oldest son in this family. Do you have another token of appreciation in you?", said Kevin. "Oh, I sure do! And here you go Kevin.", said Steve's grandma.

Then Steve's grandma handed Kevin some cash. "And what do you say boys?", said Steve's grandma. "Thank you so much. It looks like this is enough to cover the price of the game I want.", said Steve.

"Thank you grandma.", said Kevin. "You're both very welcome.", said Steve's grandma. "I'm gonna go back to my room now. You two enjoy the rest of your afternoon.", said Steve's grandma.

"Oh, we will. We sure will.", said Kevin with a smile on his face. "See you grandma.", said Steve. Then Steve's grandma went back to her room.

"So, what are you gonna do with your extra money?", said Steve. "I'm not sure yet.", said Kevin. "How much did she give you anyways?", said Steve.

"She gave me twenty bucks. I could get us some extra junk food at the nearby Fast Track gas station. Or get a game myself. Who knows?", said Kevin. "Well, I'm only gonna be using my money for this Pac-Man game.", said Steve. Then they both put their extra money away in both of their pockets and continued to enjoy the afternoon.

It was now Wednesday night. Steve and Kevin were sitting in the living room watching the pregame show to Pistons basketball. Then Steve's grandma came into the living room.

"Just my luck! The Pistons are on!", said Steve's grandma. Then Steve's grandma got the remote and turned up the TV. Then she sat down in the middle of Steve and Kevin who moved over to make some room for her.

"Grandma, you're a sports fan?", said Kevin. "Of course I am! I follow all four major sports leagues. That's another thing you didn't know about me. And I sure do love my Pistons! Go Pistons!", said Steve's grandma. "Well, it looks like she'll be watching the game with us.", said Steve. "Sure looks like it. And I don't have a problem with that.", said Kevin.

Then all three of them sat on the couch and watched the pregame show that was leading up to Pistons basketball. "Hey, do you mind turning it down guys?!", said Kevin Sr. "No, don't turn it down, son. I'm the one that turned up the TV, not Steve or Kevin. My Pistons is on!", said Steve's grandma.

"Oh, well, that explains a lot. Alright, you boys are good. Disregard what I said.", said Kevin Sr. Then Kevin Sr. left the living room, and the TV stayed at the same volume. "You boys know who Detroit is playing tonight?", said Steve's grandma.

"They're at The Palace of Auburn Hills tonight hosting the Washington Wizards.", said Steve. Then the Pistons game started. And Steve, Kevin, and Steve's grandma started to watch.

Moments later, it was halftime. The score at the half was 50-47 in favor of Detroit. Then Anna came into the living room.

"Alright, time for dinner guys.", said Anna. "Can we eat in the living room this one time mom?", said Kevin. "No. We always eat our meals at the dining room table.", said Anna.

"Anna, why don't you let the boys eat in the living room this one time. Detroit basketball is on.", said Steve's grandma. "Yeah, you heard what the lady said mom.", said Steve. "Please, mom? Pretty please?", said Kevin.

"Alright, fine. But I'm only letting it slide this time since you are spending quality time with your grandmother.", said Anna. "Thank you mom.", said Steve. "Yeah, thanks mom.", said Kevin.

Then moments later, Anna bought Steve and Kevin's dinner into the living room. Anna picked up the remote to mute the TV. "Now let's say grace first. Then you all can get back to watching the game.", said Anna.

Then grace was said, and Anna put the sound back on the TV. The 3rd quarter of that game started. And Steve, Kevin, and Steve's grandma started watching the 2nd half of that Pistons game.

Then when the game was over, the Pistons beat the Wizards 97-90. "Well, that was an awesome basketball game. Now I'm gonna go wind down and hit the sack.", said Kevin. "Yeah, same here.", said Steve.

"Same here as well guys. I enjoyed the time we spent together. We should do this again. When is the next Pistons game?", said Steve's grandma. "I don't know. I'll have to check the TV guide or look up the schedule online.", said Steve. "And maybe all three of us could watch some Red Wings hockey together as well.", said Kevin.

"Oh, why I would love that little Kevin. Look up their schedule as well. I'm going to go to bed now.", said Steve's grandma. "Alright, goodnight.", said Kevin. "Goodnight grandma.", said Steve. "Goodnight boys.", said Steve's grandma.

It was now Wednesday, February 20, 2002. It was the start of the evening. Steve and Kevin were minding their own business in their room.

Steve's mom knocked on Steve and Kevin's door while it was open. "Guys, me, your father, and your grandmother all agreed that it would be a good idea to play charades tonight. And that involves the whole family. So, what do you say guys?", said Anna. "Sure, why not? Kev, you in?", said Steve.

"Sure, I'll come too.", said Kevin. "Ok, great! See you two in the living room.", said Anna. Then Anna went into the living room.

Later on that evening, everybody in Steve's household got together in the living room to play some charades. "Okay, I think it's about time everybody gets this charades game started.", said Kevin Sr. "Alright everybody, here are the rules.", said Anna.

"All of us are gonna be divided into two teams.", said Kevin Sr. "There's gonna be a kid team and an adult team.", said Anna. "The three of us adults will make up the big team, while the four of you boys will make up the little team.", said Kevin Sr.

"Hey, I was thinking maybe we all get separated into three teams. Adults, kids, and little kids. Three adults, two kids, and two younger kids.", said Kevin. "That seems like great idea honey.", Anna said to Kevin Sr. "No, I still like my idea better, so we'll go with the two teams just mentioned.", said Kevin Sr.

"Well, I guess that settles it then. Let's play.", said Anna. Then notebooks were handed out to each team. "The answer(s) may be restricted to words, titles of artistic works, etc., to limit the difficulty. Words which cannot be explained other than by spelling (e.g., the, or, of) may be excluded from play except within larger phrases.", said Kevin Sr.

Then Anna got a kitchen timer and set it down somewhere in the living room for it to be used in the game. "We will keep a scoreboard to tally the teams' points: one for every correctly guessed answer and one for every answer the opposing team failed to guess within the allotted time.", said Kevin Sr. "Teams will alternate until every player has acted at least once.", said Anna.

"Everybody understands all the rules of the game?", said Kevin Sr. Then everybody else in the living room just nodded in agreement. "Okay then. Let's get started.", said Kevin Sr.

Then the game finally got started. "The adults get to go first. And mom, you get to act first.", said Kevin Sr. "Okay sweetie.", Steve's grandma said to her son.

Then Steve's grandma proceeded to perform her act. She performed the act on her teammates. Her other teammates had to guess the correct answer for their team to get a point. That's how the game was being played that night.

As she was performing her act, Steve's parents were trying their best to guess the correct answer to her act. "Um, some kind of animal?", said Anna. "A dog! It's a dog!", said Kevin Sr.

Then she continued her act while the timer was still ticking away. "A monkey! It's a monkey!", said Anna. "A lion?", said Kevin Sr.

Then the timer was still ticking, and both of Steve's parents didn't have much time left. "We're starting to run out of time honey!", said Anna. Then with about 5 seconds left, one of Steve's parents finally guessed the correct answer.

"A cat!", said Anna. "You got it Anna!", said Steve's grandma. Then the adult team succeeded and got one point.

"Alright, now it's the kids' turn.", said Kevin Sr. It was now the kids' turn like Steve's dad said. The kids were gonna discuss who was gonna get the first act.

"Alright fellas, which kid will get to do the first act?", said Steve. "Well, the adults had their eldest member go first. Therefore, I should go first.", said Kevin. "Good thinking. You can go first.", said Steve.

Then Kevin proceeded to perform his act. He performed the act to his teammates, and they had to guess the correct answer to be tied with the adult team. Kevin's other teammates tried to guess the correct answer.

"It looks like some kind of sport. Can you guess what it is guys?", said Steve. "Cow.", said, Matthew. "Cow? What are you talking about Matthew? That's a sport he's signaling.", said Steve.

"What about you Cody?", said Steve. "It's a firefighter.", said Cody. "That looks nothing like a firefighter Cody. You two are the most terrible charades players I've ever known.", said Steve.

And Kevin continued to perform his act. "Both of you guys are no help. It looks like I'm gonna take the driver's seat on this one.", said Steve. Then Steve proceeded to guess the correct answer himself.

"Is it a pitcher?", said Steve. "Yes! You got it Steve!", said Kevin. "Yes! We got a point! We're now tied with the adults!", said Steve.

"Now it's the adults' turn.", said Kevin. "You may have won the battle, but you're not gonna win the war guys.", said Anna. "Okay, who gets to go second over here.", said Kevin Sr.

"You can go second honey.", said Anna. "Thank you, sweetie. Alright, you two better be on your A-game for this one.", said Kevin Sr. Then Kevin Sr. got up to perform his act.

He went ahead and performed his act while his other two teammates had to guess the correct answer. "Okay, it looks like something that flies.", said Anna. "Can you guess what it is?", Anna said to Steve's grandma.

"I can't guess either Anna.", said Steve's grandma. "Is it a bird, a plane?", said Anna. "Is it Superman?", said Steve's grandma.

And after both of them guessed incorrectly, Kevin Sr. continued to perform his act with the time winding down. And they both continued to guess. "It sure looks like something that flies.", said Steve's grandma.

"I feel like we got this one.", said Anna. Then time was starting to run out on them. And they continued to guess what it was that Steve's dad was signaling.

Then time ran out on them. "It was a paper airplane.", said Kevin Sr. "A paper airplane?! Seriously?!", said Anna.

"How in the world would we have been able to find that out?", said Steve's grandma. "I know. I said plane. That could be any type of plane. I want a do-over.", said Anna. "Sorry, there are no do-overs in charades.", said Kevin Sr.

"Well, next time, try and come up with something a little easier. Okay?", said Anna. "I'll take note of that.", said Kevin Sr.

"Now it's the kids' turn again.", said Steve's grandma. "Okay, the adults lost that one, so now the momentum is in our favor.", said Steve. "You can go second Steve.", said Kevin. "Okay. Let's do this thing.", said Steve.

Then Steve got up to perform his act. He began performing his act for his teammates. And the other three brothers proceeded to guess the correct answer to Steve's act.

"Okay, it's something that moves.", said Steve. "A firetruck!", said Cody. "Is it a car?", said Steve.

Then after both Steve and Cody guessed wrong, the game continued. "A firetruck!", said Cody. "You already said that Cody. Do you need to have the rules of the game explained to you again? Matthew, maybe you could help us out with this one. Just think of something that moves.", said Steve.

"A firetruck!", said Matthew. "A regular truck?!", said Steve. "A car!", said Cody.

Then time was starting to run out on the children. "A police car!", said Steve. "You got it!", said Kevin.

"Yes! Now we're in the lead.", said Steve. "The score is now 2-1 in favor of our side.", said Kevin. "Now it's the adults' move.", said Steve.

"Okay, I'll perform the act this time guys.", said Anna. Then the mother-son combination of Steve's grandma and Kevin Sr. had to work together to guess the correct answer to Anna's act that she was about to perform. Anna got up and proceeded to perform her act.

She began to perform her act for her other two teammates. As she was performing, the other two teammates were trying to guess the right answer to her act. Anna was flipping imaginary burgers in her act.

"A chef! A cook!", said Kevin Sr. "The Food Network!", said Steve's grandma. "Looks like that's not it.", said Kevin Sr.

Then the game continued. "Emeril?", said Kevin Sr. "Cooking school?", said Steve's grandma.

And those also weren't what they were looking for as far as the correct answer was concerned. The game continued. "A spatula. McDonald's. Burger King.", said Kevin Sr.

"Wendy's?", said Steve's grandma. It seemed like they didn't have this one, but they both didn't give up. Then time ran out.

"I was flipping Krabby Patties.", said Anna. "You were flipping who?", said Steve's grandma. "I'm with you on this one mom. What in the world is a Krabby Patty?", said Steve's dad.

"Krabby Patties are food from this cartoon on Nickelodeon. Steve and Kevin told me all about it when it first came out back in '99. That's how I learned what Krabby Patties were.", said Anna. "Well, I gotta say, that wasn't a very easy one for us to figure out.", said Kevin Sr. "The score is still 2-1 in favor of the kids.", said Anna.

"Well, let's keep the fun going. It's your turn guys.", said Kevin Sr. And Steve's whole household had a lot of fun playing charades with the mother of the head of the household. It was a great night overall for all of them, and they were all having a great time.

It was now March 3, 2002. Steve's grandma's two-week stay at Steve's house was finally over. Steve's grandma was finally ready to move into her new home.

She was getting ready to head to her new place of residence that morning. Then when Steve's grandma got all of her stuff ready, all she had to do was wait for her cab to come up pick her up. Steve's grandma came into the living room.

The whole family was sitting in the living room. "Well, I just wanna thank you all for everything the past two whole weeks.", said Steve's grandma. "I've really had a lot of fun with you all during that time, and I enjoyed my stay over here.", said Steve's grandma.

"Thank you, mom. We appreciate having you around.", said Kevin Sr. "You're always welcome to come and visit anytime you like.", said Anna. "Oh, that's wonderful to hear! Of course, I'll come and visit.", said Steve's grandma.

Then Steve's grandma proceeded to hug Anna. Then she proceeded to hug Kevin Sr. "We're all gonna miss you so much, grandma! I hope you come and visit real soon.", said Steve.

"You boys mind giving your old grandma one last goodbye hug?!", said Steve's grandma. Then all the brothers gave their grandma one last goodbye hug. Then her cab arrived at the apartment complex.

"Well, there's my ride! Bye, everybody!", said Steve's grandma. "Bye grandma!", said Kevin. Then Steve's grandma proceeded to leave Steve's household and the apartment complex to go to her cab.

Then she finally left once the cab drove off. Steve's parents looked outside the living room window watching the cab drive off. Then life continued.

"So, guys, tell me a little bit more about these Krabby Patties. What kind of Patties are those exactly in that cartoon?", said Kevin Sr. "It's a long story dad, but I'll let you in on a little hint.", said Steve. "They're sold under the sea.", said Steve.

"And they're made like any other regular burger along with a secret formula.", said Kevin. "Interesting.", said Kevin Sr. "You should watch SpongeBob with us sometime to see what we're talking about more in-depth.", said Steve.

"Me? Watching kids shows? In your dreams?", said Kevin Sr. Then Kevin Sr. just laughed a little before leaving the living room. "I'll watch it with you guys one day.", said Anna. "Okay mom.", said Steve.

Then Anna left the living room. "Let's watch some Nickelodeon right now Kev!", said Steve. "You said it my man!", said Kevin.

Then Steve got the TV remote and turned on the TV. He changed the TV to Nickelodeon, and they proceeded to start watching. And normal life continued after that.
