A Gamble

The heavy door to Snowbird's cell closes behind me. I'm lying on the floor after being shoved in by a hasty guard. I can't believe they're trying to kill me again! What if she succeeds this time? I won't be able to see the city of Prenford with Crynn! I have to keep her away from me. As soon as the cage allows her, Snowbird jumps away from the wall and comes running to me with a large grin and her arms outstretched. I wrap my arms around myself and shrink back.

"Don't touch me!" I hiss.

Her smile falls and her arms sag. I refuse to acknowledge the weight in my chest that's saying I regret speaking to her so harshly.

"You killed her," I manage to croak, "You killed her! You sucked Bit dry like a monster!"

Snowbird's gaze turns icy and cold, her face becomes a mask. She walks towards me, I hold up my hands threateningly.

"Don't touch me! Don't even come near me!"

I'm almost sobbing.

The doctor that replaced Bit was unfeeling. She has stronger magic than Bit did but she still wasn't Bit. This doctor, Doctor Res Ingemar, was just as cold, uncaring, and selfish as the guards that haul me around this dreadful place. She's one of those doctors that doesn't give you a warning before she jabs you with a foot-long needle filled with questionable contents.

Snowbird stops a few feet away from me and sighs in agitation,

"Lift up your shirt."

"What?! No! You'll kill me!"

Snowbird sighs like my fear is silly and uncalled for.

"I promise I won't kill you now, so lift up your shirt."

I watch her for a few seconds, then reach down and lift the corner of my shirt so my boney side is exposed. My pale skin gets goosebumps while Snowbird gasps quietly.

"Will you let me touch you?"

I immediately start to refuse,

"N-"

"I promise I won't try to kill you."

I think it over. Snowbird said "try" so there's a possibility I may die, but what the heck. If I die I'll be with Bit, if I die I wont have to see Doctor Ingemar, if I die I'll be free of this awful place. But if I die, Crynn will come tomorrow to visit only to be turned away because his older sister is now a black husk. If I die, I will never see Prenford again, if I die Crynn won't ever know how his visit had stopped me from crushing my own windpipe that night. It's a gamble, but I know death is a certainty on only one side.

"Do it."
