Kelechi's POV
"Kele Kele! How far na"
Pidgin English was never my thing. So whenever Mercy texted or spoke in Pidgin, I got confused on how to reply.
"I dey O"
I typed before deleting. That did not sound real. What should I say? Maybe I should start with the real gist. Which real gist sef? I can't tell anyone my family problem.
You might be wondering... What family problem does she have? And I say to thee, we had problems.
Remember aunty Carol? My mom's sister? The one we were on our way to before the explosion? The one that was supposed to get married two years ago but didn't? She was the problem.
Right after church, there was peace in the house. Grandma and I were preparing lunch. Ben, and my dad and was watching whatever sport excitedly. Aunty Sandra was changing Gozie's diaper. And Uncle Joe was settling Ify and Meso's latest fight.
Everything was going well until they came...
The doorbell rang several times in the living room, but Ben and my dad did not notice. I had to walk from the kitchen to the living room to open the door.
I was greeted with a sight. Uncle Sam and Aunty Carol. The way they posed together, you would think they were a couple. Uncle Sam had a defeated look on his face with aunty Carol's arm around his waist.
We had a surprise visit from Aunt Carol, the drama queen and Uncle Sam. She came with a huge bop in her stomach and a smile on her face. She came pregnant!
"Surprise!" Aunty Carol's shrilling voice could be heard everywhere in the house.
My dad and Ben stopped watching to see what who made that horrible sound. It was that loud.
"Is that how to greet your pregnant aunty?" Aunty continued her drama. We just stared at her.
We all except Uncle Sam just stood there trying to process what's happening.
"Sam! Say something. Is this how you want the mother of your unborn child to be treated!" She turned to Uncle Sam.
And that was enough to understand that aunty Carol had been having an affair with Uncle Sam.
"Sam let's talk outside" my dad tried getting Uncle Sam outside but our drama queen refused to release him.
"He's not going anywhere. My baby needs his father."
And that was how they started their verbal fight. It did not last long. Mama took control.
Ben was not shocked. He did not seem surprised. Just angry. And let me tell you; it was very rare to find him angry. He was very good at staying calm and tolerating anyone. He could be sad or disappointed at people but he was never the angry type.
But that day, his entire demeanor spelt anger as he glared at his father. He didn't even acknowledge aunty Carol.
Uncle Sam did not even say anything. He just stood there guaging everyone's reaction.
The mood in the parlour was tense. Everyone felt it except Aunty Carol that just stood there smiling as she kept drawing circles on her stomach.
And that my dear was the problem.
Hmmmm... Should I tell Mercy? I did not know why I hesitated. Maybe I was tired of being a burden to my friend. Whatever the reason was, I am glad I did not tell her.
"Everything is fine O
You get gist for me?"
"Babe, yes O! Hmmmm..."
Immediately I saw her reply, I knew it was something bad.
"What is it???"
"I can't tell you.
You need to check your FB timeline and see for yourself."
"Just tell me already!🙂"
"Just check
It's not what I can tell you."
"I don't understand why I have to go through that process when you can just tell me 😤😤
No reply. So, I texted again.
" How bad is it? I know it's something bad. Is it bad bad or just bad???"
"Text me when you see it."
And she went off. I hate when people are like this. Would it kill her to just say it and save me the stress?
I have not logged in to Facebook for days now. Not since last friday. When i logged in, the first thing I saw was...
Different pictures of David half naked with kemi at his side, smiling!
She tagged me!
I could not remember ever being friends with her on fb. I would not have seen that stupid post if Kemi did not tag me. The day I blocked David's number, I blocked him on Facebook too.
"Kelechi! Mama is calling you!" Ify, my cousin shouted at my door. I had been in my room after aunty Carol drama.
Ify was about to leave when she noticed I was crying. I tried wiping my tears. But they just kept coming.
Finally, when it stopped, I watched Ify's shocked expression turn to that of confusion.
" Kelechi! " Mama's voice echoed louder than Ify's.
" Mama she's crying!" Ify screamed back.
The silly tears that managed to stop threatened to come back with full force. I looked away from her and thought of funny moments. That always worked; and it worked.
