Chapter 40

"Darling calm down", Thomas tried to shush his crying wife.

" No! I will not do that! Here I am, suffering from losing my brother, my own flesh and blood, and you're roaming around, lending your shoulder to a murderer?!" Thomas visibly flinched. He had never even imagined such words from Cecilia. Perhaps the loss had hurt her too much.

"I wasn't lending a shoulder to anyone at all. I was.. I was searching for a quiet place to calm myself down. You know I can't stand death." Cecilia suddenly yanked her wrist free from his hold.

"Liar! Don't you dare come near me! Go and spend the eternity in your criminal girlfriend's arms or something!" She shut him out.

"You're reacting too much, Lia. Stop suspecting me. I know Nathan implanted these weeds of poison in your heart." There was no answer, just sobs from the other side.

Thomas ran his hand through his hair in frustation. He hadn't been this bothered since Carina's wedding. He decided to spend the night at the garden, near the wild Strawberries. He scowled at the sour taste. The fruits had clearly gone off-season. Somehow the tree always had fruits every month. This only deepened his frown.

Looking up at the night sky, Thomas recalled the old times. How Carina would sneak into his chamber, straddle him, wake him and lure him to witness the sparkling diamonds of the sky. He wondered for a brief moment. If he went to Carina and asked her to sneak out with him, would she say yes? He chuckled lighlty.

"You're sitting by yourself at midnight, chuckling. Am I to think you've gone bonkers?" Carina crossed her arms.
