Suspicion (3)

Shera looked at her like she was being ridiculous. "Why would you even think of that out of the blue?"

She sat back down. "I know you think I'm crazy but think about it. Who would benefit the most from us being against each other?"

"That would be the Aubert family, if you ask me." She responded.

Kara rubbed her forehead, wondering if she was really overthinking things. In the end, she decided to think about it later. "Fine. I'll check on Carlos."

The man's IV was running out when she walked in so she checked the record and put him on another.

"Are you doing your rounds?" He asked, looking up at her flirtatiously.

She ignored his gaze. "You know that I don't do rounds."

"Oh." He thought about it. "Then are you the doctor in charge of me?"

"No."

He raised a brow. "Then that means you just couldn't stop yourself from checking up on me. Are you in love with me?"

She ignored him and brought in the new bandage to replace the old one.

"I'm going to redress your wound." She informed him.

He remained silent until she opened his clothes to access his wound. He smiled up at her. "I knew you couldn't wait to get me naked. Ow!"

He winced when she poked him near the wound, shooting pain through his body. "Your job is to save patients, not kill them. Be a bit professional, Dr. Williams."

"And your job as a patient is to lie down and shut the fuck up. You should be glad I'm not shoving a scapel into the wound." She rolled her eyes and proceeded to take off the bandage.

She had treated countless male patients but Carlos' inappropriate words made it hard for her to focus.

"Are you impressed by my body?" He once again teased.

She ignored him but her eyes couldn't help travelling down his body. His muscles were more defined than she had ever imagined they would be under his shirts and her heart picked up its pace when her fingers accidentally touched his skin.

His heart was racing and it wasn't hard to imagine what he was thinking about. She finished dressing the wound and retreated. "You lost a lot of blood. You shouldn't tire yourself up by letting your mind run wild." She warned.

"How will that weaken me?" He asked, making her shrug. She wasn't trying to make sense. He only needed to stop flirting with her. Clearly, her methods weren't working.

"I'm stronger than I look." He winked, earning a scoff. It was clear that she didn't believe him so he tried to sit up. "Do you want me to prove it to you? We are on our own here."

His insinuation couldn't be any clearer. She took a breath to stop herself from exploding.

"You cannot even keep your own life intact. What makes you think you can actually satisfy me?" She retorted.

He finally shut his mouth and while she thought she had gone a little too far, it was great that he had stopped spewing nonsense.

"What do you remember about that night?" She asked when he was finally ready to talk about it.

He met her gaze with his own cold one. "Why should I tell you?"

She was taken aback by his response. "Do you also think I could hurt you?"

"Ask the woman who threatened to kill me if she ever saw me again." He shot back.

She rubbed her temples in exasperation. "You were a pain the ass in more ways than I could count and the son of my enemy. So forgive me for wanting you dead at the time. But what do you really think?" She didn't deny her own words from the past but she had to admit that they might be used as evidence to prove that she had a motive.

"What I really think? We would make a perfect match." He teased. Seeing that she was on the verge of flipping out, he quickly added, "But that all depends on you. As for this incident, there is only one person who knew where I was that night."

Her eyes widened. "What do you mean by that?"

"I only told you where I was going. I have good inticts and I'm certain that I was not being followed. So…"

She shook her head in disbelief. "So you also think I attempted to kill you."

"What the hell? Of course not." He frowned. "I would be dead a hundred times if you wanted me to be. While you may not have had an ill motive towards me, I can't speak for your shadow."

"Wilson." She cursed under her breath. "Did you see him?"

"I didn't see anyone." He shrugged. "But you may want to find out where he went after leaving you that night."

She had dropped her suspicion earlier but seeing as he was thinking along the same lines as she was, she was confused. Wilson had no reason to want to harm Carlos. However, he worked for Santino. Could Santino really be behind this?

The thought was yet to settle on her mind when he asked, "Do you think the devil actually keeps his promises?"

She frowned at the thought of it. "It would be out of character for him to actually keep a promise."
