Why would Shera call at such an hour and so out of the blue? She wondered aloud, but her head was already spinning. There was only one reason—a medical emergency.

She shuffled out of bed at the same time as Carlos answered the call. She could clearly hear Shera's frantic voice as the latter spoke but she couldn't quite make out the words. All she heard was Carlos telling her they would be ready to leave in a jiffy.

He turned to her as soon as the call ended. "Leo's plane is on its way to pick us up. La Rose Noire members were attacked last night and it doesn't sound good."

She ran a hand through her messy hair. "Just great. I thought all would be well as long as I left Imperium." Even though she knew this was likely not about her, she had thought of herself as some kind of jinx and assumed things would change if she left.
