soon

"Really?" Alex asked. Her sister nodded vigorously.

"Yes! " Alex shouted and ran to her room.

"Whats happening?" Dan walked in. Abby looked at him.

"It was our dad's birthday a few days back and we're going out to the carnival he used to take us to as kids" she said.

"Did you ask me?" He said. She raised an eyebrow and crossed her hands over her chest.

"Excuse me?" She asked. He scoffed.

"I'm the Dad now and.. "

"No" she stopped him, "you're not the Dad. You're the husband. There is a difference. Learn it" she said and walked way. She went to her room and pulled out her phone.

"Hello? Jack? Yeah I told Alexis. She is so excited.... Ok.. in an hour? Ok.. thanks Jack. Love you. Bye" she said smiling.

"Who was that?" A voice came. Abby turned to find Dan standing at the door of her room.

"Ever heard of knocking?" She asked.

"Who did you say love you to?" Dan asked suspiciously.

"My boyfriend of two years jake" she said casually.

"Does your mom.. " he began but she cut him off.

"Look here Dan. I can see you're trying to 'assert' yourself and be a fatherly figure. But I had a fatherly figure. He died. And i don't need anyone else to step into his position. Ok? As for your question. Yes, mom knows. I grew up with Jake and he asked me out in front of mom. So.. back off and knock next time. Till then let me show you the door. Look ,the door" she said as she pointed at the door.

"but.."

"its the wooden thing with the knob" she added . He huffed and walked out. She sighed and walked toward her table. It had picture of her father and her on it. She gulped the knot that formed in her throat.

"I miss you daddy" she said softly. This was the first time since his passing that she felt his absence so heavily. In the end she too was a little girl who had lost her father. She hadn't had time to grieve or be sad. No she had to grow up and take charge of the house. It was because of her that their mother could refrain from having a total breakdown.

She blinked back tears as she heard Alex bounding down the stairs. Time to be the strong adult. She pasted a smile and turned just as Alex entered the room.

"Jake will be here in an hour. Put in some good clothes and maybe today you can borrow some.. I don't know.. mascara from me?" She said slyly.

"You're the best!!! " Alex shouted and wrapped her arms around her sister.

"I want it!! It's SO FLUFFY!! " Alex shouted.

Jake laughed and nodded as he bought the teddy bear. It was a blue bear with a red bow. It was around two feet tall.

Abby smiled at Jake. Jake was as old as Abby. He had light brown hair that was combed to one side. His eyes were green. His face had a light scruff. He wrapped his arm around Abby as Alex ran toward the cotton candy stand.

"You ok? You seem dull." Jake asked.Abby nodded.

"I.. just.. I miss him" she said. Jake was the one person who knew how she felt. He knew her sorrows and her pains. He shared them with her.

"I know." He said and kissed her head.

They played around on all the rides and ate as much as they could. Finally they walked back home.

"So did you enjoy Alexis?" Jake asked. She nodded and hugged him and Abby.

"Thank you" she said. Jake kissed the top of her head. "I will miss you" Alex said.

"Miss us? Where are we going?" Abby asked looking at Jake. He shrugged.

"Well. You will get married and then I will live with mom and Dan and Andy" she said thoughtfully.

Abby looked at Jake and smiled, "that's rubbish! You'll come with us to our new home! " "Really?" Alex asked looking at Jake.

"Of course! You're like my Lil' sis aren't you?" He said ruffling her hair. She squealed in joy causing him to laugh. They walked by the park. Their father used to love the park. Abby sighed and smiled at it. She walked over to the bench where she had sat with her father many times before. She sat and gazed at the full moon. A tear escaped her eye and trailed down her cheek.

Jake and Alex looked at each other. They slowly walked over to her and sat next to her. Alex wrapped her arm around Abby and Jake put his arm on both of them. The night wind blew cold and yet comforting.

They sat there in silence. Abby sighed. A couple more years and... She would do it. She would settle down with Jake. Alex would live with them. They would soon be a family. Soon... soon.
