Sixteen

The first thing Adara felt when she woke up was someone touching her back. She tried to object, but it felt as if her vocal chords had been shredded to pieces. A low, guttural sound of pain came out of her mouth.

"It's only me," Beck said gently.

Adara blew a shaky breath out of her mouth. When she spoke, her voice was rough and ragged from overuse. "You're here now?"

Beck didn't say anything for a time. "Yeah, I'm here now," he whispered finally, his voice tearful.

"You left me alone."

"I didn't know that would happen-"

"I was so afraid," she admitted, "and I wished for you of all people. I hoped you would come to help me." Her trust for him was dissipating by the second. She couldn't tell if she was smart to let it go or if she was just afraid after Gabe. Because he had found her again. No matter how far she ran, where she hid, he always seemed to.
