Twenty-Four

Adara could feel the burning heat of shame crawling up her neck and devouring her whole. She couldn't even deny it - because she had left Nick for Gabe. She'd traded unconditional love for broken bones and bloody noses.

"I'm sorry," she said, suddenly beginning to feel miserable. Doctor Peri paid them no attention, focused instead on Adara's uncanny ability to stay out of the hospital despite devastating injuries. Nick and Adara were effectively alone in the dark room.

"Yeah," he remarked bitterly, "I'm sure you are now."

What could she possibly say to him to excuse what she had done? She had treated him no better than the dirt beneath her shoe; she had no right to expect forgiveness. "He wasn't like this in the beginning."

"Then you should've left after the beginning." Adara bit her lip. She knew that, of course, but it wasn't as simple as everyone tried to make it seem. They didn't know the circumstances.
