The Professor's Undecipherable Will (Day 1)

t was pouring out there. The sky was dark and lightning flashed. Tumultuous roars of thunder shook Owlsburgh. The howling wind mercilessly picked up every litter on the street and threw them all over the street.

As the rain continued to splatter, you and Detective W were playing a quick round of Go. He introduced you to this board game, and you were playing your second round. You got the basics down as you placed a black stone on the 9 by 9 board.

"Hmm... I pass..." Detective W said. He looked at the board, and realized there was no way he can turn the tide now. You passed, too, and counted the score.

"Excellent job, my friend. A three stone handicap, and you managed to win by 5.5 points. You improve quite fast!"

You chuckled, and rubbed the backside of your head in slight embarrassment and pride. "Yeah. This game isn't that bad, to be honest..."

Without warning, the office door opened and two soaked people walked in. The boy was wearing a faded Sailor Moon T-shirt, while the girl donned a black Metallica sweater. They both have pale skin, brown eyes, and slender fingers.

"Which one of you is W?" the girl demanded. "I need to know right now."

Detective W waved his right arm. "That's me! May I know who you are?" He exclaimed happily. It has been about two weeks since Detective W didn't have any cases. Even though that's good for the city, Detective W felt like he needed some more excitement in his life.

"Oh, you're W...? You certainly don't look smart, or feel smart... unlike what Grandpa said," the girl told Detective W. Detective W quickly glanced at his clothes. He was wearing a white Doraemon T-shirt with green camo shorts. I guess I don't give off a smart vibe with these clothes, he thought, chuckling to himself at the same time.

"Ha-Eun, you can't say your thoughts out loud like this!" the boy reminded her.

"Shut it, Ha-joon. I can speak how I like!" the girl snapped.

Detective W smirked at those two's interactions. "By the way, Ha-Eun, Ha-joon, who is your grandpa? I'm curious..."

"Cho! Cho Youngho! The famous inventor and the thermodynamic professor at the Owlsburgh University!" Ha-Eun harshly spat out. "Grandpa referred to you before he passed away! He said you were one of his best students!"

"Oh! Professor Cho! That's a name that I haven't... wait. You said he died?!" Detective W burst out.

Ha-Eun nodded. You could see tears welling from her eyes. "Yeah... why did he have to die?! And all he left us is just a piece of paper!" She angrily clenched her fists.

Ha-joon apologized for Ha-Eun. "Sorry for that outburst, Detective W. But, yes, he did leave us a will. Unfortunately, we can't decipher any of his code. When we asked Grandpa, who was on his last, eternal breath, we were told, 'Go to W's place. He had made a detective business for himself. He's the one I trust.'"

"Wait... you said a will... " Detective W noticed. "Have you guys gone through the funeral ceremonies already?"

"No... not yet. All of the closest family members were given the will. The will is to be read this Sunday."

You remembered, "But I thought wills are rarely read to the heirs anymore. Why go through all this legal trouble in the 21st century."

"That you gotta ask my grandpa about," Ha-Eun wiped the tears from her eyes. "I don't even know why he left a will."

"May I see the will?" Detective W asked. Now, he was really interested. He knew about Professor Cho's personality. Whenever Professor Cho gives out an extremely difficult bonus problem in class, he would usually write the answer in code for the people who can't figure it out. Usually, the code is difficult to decipher, too.

"Sure. Here it is..." Ha-joon grabbed the will from his backpack. The will was neat and crisp, undisturbed by the assault of rain. You and Detective W took a good look at the will. It read:

"To my dear family...

My time here on Earth is quite short. In fact, I might die tomorrow. Who knows?

I only have a few things to share. As of November 23rd, 2018, these are the only heirlooms I shall leave for my family... Ha-joon, my grandson, I know you want to start your own robotics company. Here's around $500,000 USD to get you started.

Ji-hye, my daughter, I know you and your husband has been going through troubles with your make-up company. Here's $1,000,000 USD. Use it wisely.

Ha-Eun, my granddaughter, to think that you will be interested in astronomy. I have several telescopes, and software that can analyze the space image data. I have full confidence that you can use them to the max potential.

As for the rest, I know you have no ambition, no drive to explore, make mistakes, and grow. Instead, you are all concerned living comfortably without any chance of improvement. So, there will nothing for you! However, that doesn't mean I am unwilling to give you a chance. By solving the code below, you will have shown a meager drop of your ambition, but that's enough for me to believe in your potential.

Decipher this code, and you will get $5,000,000 USD! That's it!

Code: 1,2,8,51,55,65,83

Hint for the above code: SEB FKLBQ CJX , OFDB SEGQSX CNTQ, OFQFDQFOE NMB

Final hint for the above code: *attaches a picture of a fly*

*Isn't that fly so cute?!*-written on a post-it note.

Sincerely yours,

Cho Youngho. "

Detective W took a deep breath, and stroked his goatee with his left hand. He tapped his desk with the will. He chuckled for a bit. Professor Cho, always like this... he reminisced. Believing in everybody's mental power, even at the very end... Very well, I accept this challenge!

You forgot that the twins were looking at you two. Ha-Eun played with her nails as she impatiently demanded, "Hey, Detective W, have you figured it out, yet?"

Detective W laid the will on his mahogany desk. He stared at the twins with his determined black eyes. "I do have a clue. In fact, I am 100 percent sure I know the answer to the hint for the above code. Before I share the answer, however, I need to know the answer to this question. Where is the will reading held at?"

"At Grandpa's house... I believe," Ha-joon replied a bit hesitantly. He reverted to his confidence once he checked with his sister. "Yeah, at Grandpa's house, in his personal library. That's where the will reading will be held at."

Detective W's face instantly blossomed into a hearty grin. "Yep. I am one hundred percent sure of the answer now!"

"Answer?" You were confused by Detective W's confident statement.

"Yeah! You know what, I will let you have fun of deciphering! You can just tell me what the code says. That's all I expect from you."

"Come on, boss, at least give me a hint... you know I suck at solving puzzles..." you dejectedly said.

"All right, then. In the spirit of my late professor, I will give you only one hint on this! It's substitution! That's all I'm gonna give!"

You felt the intense glare of Ha-Eun and the appraising gaze from Ha-joon. This was one decipher you can't afford to lose on.
