Chapter Twenty-Three:

"What happened to your face?" I ask Gabriel. He traps me between my locker and himself.

"Nothing... I fell." He lies.

"You don't get a black eye from falling."  I try to touch the side of his eye with my fingers but he pushes my hand away.

"Don't worry about it... I've got to go to class." Before I can say anything, like maybe bye, he storms off in the hall. For the past week and a half Gabriel has been getting a bunch of random injuries. He won't tell me anything about them and keeps telling me not to worry but I am worried. God if I came to school with a black eye he would flip his shit. We... he hasn't been the same since Halloween and I don't think that fight is the reason he is being like this because him and Liam seem to be back to normal now. He has always been hard to read, an asshole but this is totally different. He isn't really being an asshole, he's just being totally unpredictable and weird. Whenever anyone says anything to him he just seems genially agitated and at the end of the day he seems to be in a hurry to get home... or wherever he is going. The man I have talked to recently is not my boyfriend, more like a hamster that just sits there and listens but doesn't really listen at the same time.

"Is he being weird or is it just me?" I ask Griffin that approaches me from behind.

"He is definitely being weird..." I haven't seen Gabriel after school at all. He texts me, calls me but always makes up excuses about why he is busy and then comes to school the next day with a black eye, cuts and bruises, or doesn't show up. It's not like him and the fact that his friends agree with me, isn't good at all.

"Walk with me to class?" I ask Griffin and he nods. Linking arms with him, we walk down the hall to the stairwell. I stop my tracks right before walking up the second step, facing Griffin that is still on the flat ground,

"Do you think something bad is happening?" I ask.

"No... he must just be stressed out with his Mom and stuff." I can tell that Griffin doesn't believe his own words and he actually is worried. Gabriel hasn't even kissed me in days or hugged me.

"Griff... you don't have to lie to me." I tell him.

"Maddie listen to me." He places his hand on my cheek,

"Don't stick your nose in his business. If he is getting hurt, I don't want you to too. Don't ask him questions, don't ask anyone else questions unless its me or Angelica, just stay out of it." He warns.

"Do you know something I don't, Griff?" He still has his hand on my cheek.

"No, but I do know the shit Gabriel tends to get himself into and I love you, Maddie. You're like a little sister to me and that means I have to protect you at all cost. Even if it means choosing you over him." He finally lets go of me and we walk back up the stairs, not speaking another word of this.
