Last minutes

Victon walked to the "Vinnesia Bakes" and saw the bakery fully occupied as usual. He stood a few meters away looking at the bakery as if engraving the its looks into his memory. He then walked around the bakery to the back yard garden. He stops again to scan the scenery before him, so he can never forget even the position of a single apple on the apple trees. He jumped over the wooden fence and opened the unlocked back door.

The door opened with a loud creak, Victon walked in and was blasted by the hot but sweet atmosphere of the bakery's kitchen. He saw the Vinnesia couple working nonstop and the two siblings kneading dough.

Noticing Victon, Mr. Vinnesia welcomed him in. "Victon! Come in, do you want some Zeppole?"

"Yes, thank you" Victon said grabbing a Zeppole. Knowing that he would not get to eat desserts this good for a while when he leaves, Victon savored the piece of Zeppole.

"How much for a bag of Zeppole Mr. Vinnesia?" Victon asked.

"You want a bag? Here, just take it we have plenty" Mr. Vinnesia replied getting a bag of the desserts.

"But-" Victon started to argue back, but got cut off as Mrs. Vinnesia, "just take it sweetie, you're a part of the family so no need to buy."

"... okay thank you" Victon said with a bow.

"You like the Zeppole? We made a new recipe for it, it's good right!" Theodore said.

"Hm" Victon nodded.

The two siblings worked and talked, while Victon observed them and chimed into the conversation here and there.

The sun was slowly going down as there's only few customers left. Theodore was cleaning his hands in the sink when he heard Victon said, "I'm leaving to go somewhere far and I don't know when I will come back."

Theodore turned his head to see Victon looking at his sister playing with the last batch of dough. Though Theodore didn't like Victon at first, he eventually liked the fella as he wasn't arrogant like some rich kids he have seen.

"You know I see you as a friend, but I have to ask you something. Who are you Victon? I know that your identity is not something simple, but is your identity the reason why you're going away?" Theodore asked.

Victon was silently observing Megan when he said, "overall yes, as for my identity... have you heard of the Yvonnes?"

"YVONNE? Of course, I know that's the family of the Duke of this kingdom!" Theodore exclaimed as his eyes widen. "No fucking way..." he gasped.

"Surprise" Victon said nonchalantly.

"... I AM surprised because one, I thought the rich nobles are more arrogant, but you are so reserved I thought you were of some middle class family. Two I never expected a noble to come and play with us, and in a bakery at that. Three, well it doesn't matter who you are, I consider you as a friend so wanted to know where you were going." Theodore asked in whispers, "I have heard about the Venus kingdom snooping around is that why you're going?"

Victon nodded to answer Theodore's question. "Megan's going to cry when you tell her this" Theodore sighed.

"It's better than lying to her" Victon said as he walked up to Megan.

Seeing Victon walking at to her, Megan said "Victon! I'm dirty right now so don't touch me, I need to clean my hands."

Walking to Theodore she washed her hands and then she walked up to Victon, "okay I'm finished."

"Megan, can you promise me that you won't cry when I tell you something ?" Victon said softly as to not startle the girl.

Megan tilted her head then said sure.

Victon knelt on one knee, hold one of her hand and said, "I'm going to somewhere far and won't be visiting the bakery for some time."

Victon took other his hand to reach in his pockets of his coat bringing out the hair pin he had bought for her. "Here's a little goodbye present for you, I will come back alright? But you must remember me... can you promise me that you will remember me when I come back?"

Little Megan was overwhelmed with emotions and didn't know what to say. She promised Victon that she wouldn't cry, but her vision had started to blur with her tears swelling.

"W-when are you coming back?" Megan asked holding Victon's hand tighter as to not let go.

"... I don't know, but I will definitely come back. So promise me even if it takes many years, promise me you will remember me" Victon asked with sincerity.

"W-when are you leaving?" Megan asked.

Victon took out his handkerchief and swiped her tears away. "Tomorrow... this is the last day that I'll come see you until I come back."

"I-I don't want you to go" she sniffed her snot back in her nose as they threaten to fall out. "Can you not go please."

Victon went silent as he felt his heart becoming heavy with emotions. Yes, he didn't want to leave, but his position was something he can't skip.

"I can't..." Victon replied with a heavy heart.

Megan became silent and so did Victon. They didn't talk as minutes pass by. The both of them felt warmth and comfort throughout the silence, until Megan said, "okay, I promise." She took the hair pin and saw how beautiful it was with the small red gems shining on it.

"Thank you" Little Megan said, then she thought of something.

"Oh! Wait here for me, since you gave me something, I will give you something as well," Megan said as she ran off to the staircase to get to her bedroom on the second floor.

Watching her run, Victon stood up to hear Theodore say, "Are you courting my sister? Listen here she's only 8, even if you're from the Yvonne family, I won't hesitate to beat your ass if you touch my sister. Come back with a medal of honors, then I'll consider if you can date her."

Court Megan? Victon paused as he thought about it, was that why he always come back here to play with her? It's because he liked her? Victon's social intellect was slow, but it started to move to connect things together.

Victon snapped out of his thought process when Megan poked his shoulder.

Holding out a handkerchief she said, "this is my handkerchief, I stitched my first name, but I didn't finish stitching my last name. I want to give it to you anyway."

Victon took the handkerchief from her and chuckled when he saw the poorly sewed and uneven letters "MEGAN VINN".

"Thank you" Victon said patting Megan's head.

The scorching sun was nowhere sight as it was replaced by the fair moon.

"I have to go now" Victon said solemnly while looking outside. He turned back to the two siblings to wave them farewell then went up to the Vinnesia couple who were cleaning up the place to say farewell with a small bow. He left the bakery holding two treasures with him: a bag of Zeppole and a handkerchief.

After Victon left, Megan finally bursted out into tears and hugged her brother for comfort. She had noticed not only was she holding the hair pin, but she was holding Victon's handkerchief as well. The handkerchief had his name on it as "Victon Y." beautifully embroidered.

Even if many years pass, Megan will never forget his beautiful blue eyes.
