The Good Doctor

The wind blew past her hair.

She looked down.

" At this height… the fall will surely kill me " she thought to herself.

This woman was about to commit suicide, as she stood at the edge of a high building.

" Has life really been that unkind to you? " asked Doctor Nork, as he was standing behind the woman.

" I had dreams " said the woman; " I dreamt that I would go to school - to get an education. Afterwards. I would get a job. I would work hard, save a lot of money. Buy a house, a car, a puppy - a smile now appeared on the woman's face, as a tear ran down her cheek - start a family… "

" What happened? "

" Life happened… An accident happened; which resulted in me breaking my leg. I was hospitalized for six months "

" Was an accident like that - enough to destroy your whole future? "

" Yes, especially since there is no good health care… the bills stacked up… I had no money for school, and I was in no condition to work… I became a disappointment to my familie… they disowned me… left me all alone… "

The woman lifted her leg towards relief.

She now felt a hand on her shoulder.

" You are not alone " said Doctor Nork with his welcoming-doctor-smile.

" What is my life worth? Does it have any meaning? "

In a gentle voice, Nork said;

" Let me give it meaning "

The good doctor gently touched the woman's forehead, as she now fell over the edge.

As the woman was falling, she was changing, transforming.

Doctor Nork gave the woman the ability to change, at will, into - what many would call; a monster -- but the woman would call it; Salvation.

She became Salvation.

Salvation was a combination between an angel and a devil. She mostly resembled a winged succubus.

She had control over fire and earth.

She had purpose, which is something any human desires. And she now gave into revenge - revenge against life.

Doctor Nork looked on as Albino had arrived at the scene, riding on her giant lion.

Albino noticed her father on top of the building.

" Father, " said Albino.

" Disappointment " said Doctor Nork in a cold tone.

A sad expression befell Albino's face, but she quickly regained her focus, as she heard the cries for help.

Doctor Nork could be heard sighing.

" You could have been so much more… "

The good doctor regained his calm composure.

As Doctor Nork was about to vanish inside one of his own portals, he said;

" Another patient cured "

I forgot to mention.

Doctor Nork and Albino are two characters who can both be found in; The Strange Island of Doctor Nork by Robert Bloch.
