Chapter 32

Conir brought the car up the on-ramp and onto the highway. He looked at Kandais in the rear-view mirror. “We're glad to have your help, Kandais. But you give the word and we're out of here and taking you home, you understand?”

Kandais smiled thinly and nodded. “I can't leave you grandpas alone. You might slip a hip or something.”

All three of them laughed softly and short. The highway was crowded but moving steadily in the late rush hour. The Highs passed by on the right, the first of the platforms only twenty feet above the highway's railings. The sky-flung buildings ended abruptly, and gave way to the suburban sprawl of the Mids. Neon and LCD signs blinked and flickered along commercial strips, and were lost behind high hedges that blended storefront into homestead. The closer they got to the Radcliffe exit, the thinner traffic got until they were all alone.
