Chapter 17

Kandais shouldered the door open. Tightly winding stairs sank into dim depths. Kandais wished, nearly aloud, that she had a light to shine as she took her first careful steps. The serfs grunted stiffly as they descended.

Kandais began to wonder what exactly had happened to make them seem so weak. Just an hour previous they had been joking and boasting of strength. Now they were more like old men than the proud serf's she'd first met. She knew so little about them, why did she trouble herself with their gasping, joint-popping forms? Why not leave them behind and escape with the own life intact; Run back to her home and hide safe under her warm, heavy blankets until the sun shone once again bright in the sky.
