Nova woke up the next morning and stared at her ceiling. Was that real? It couldn't be, people don't just turn into wolves. Before her thoughts could go further a voice declared, 'Nope it was not a dream. You are very much a werewolf and I am very much here.'
The voice caused Nova to jump and nearly fall out of bed as she asked, 'Dawn?'
'What, it has only been 8 hours, how could you have forgotten me?'
Nova couldn't help but laugh at Dawn's insulted tone before responding, 'Sorry, I just had to make sure. I mean it is absolutely crazy.'
'Aww, I forgive you. Even though this is real, you still can't go around telling people about the voice in your head. You will end up in a psych ward or as a science experiment.' Dawn warned Nova.
Her head nodded vigorously in agreement. 'Don't worry, it shouldn't be too hard. I mean most of my life is a lie already so shouldn't be too hard. Anyways, it is Wednesday, so I need to get ready for school.'
'Yay, go you! You can do this Nova.'
Nova laughed and shook her head, 'Aren't I supposed to be the cheerleader here? but thanks.' She couldn't help the smile on her face as she got ready for the day. It was going to be a good day so she chose a cute flared maroon skirt with a form-fitting black and white striped crop. Of course, it was a chilly November day, so she had to bring her nice black coat.
Sophomore year classes were proving to be just as boring as Freshman classes. Yes, Nova loved to learn, but high school classes were normally very boring. Although you do get a few teachers that make lessons fun which is nice. She paid attention to all the classes but pretended to be on her phone or talking to others almost all day. Well, truthfully people would talk to her and Nova would simply nod and respond as required.
Lunch was a bit more exciting as two boys got into a fight. Not sure what it was for. Then again one of the boys was her brother, Carter, so it was probably over something very stupid. Eventually, the principal came and the fight was broken up and everyone returned to life as the two trouble makers were dragged off to the office.
Finally, Nova made it home and managed to slip upstairs to do her homework before anyone caught her. She listened to her voice recordings of the classes, took notes, and finished all the assignments before dinner. Ok, she didn't listen to all of the class, just the parts where the teachers would give instructions.
Everyone was already out by the time Nova went downstairs so she decided to just make herself some spaghetti. Spaghetti with meatballs and pineapples, people may think she is crazy but it is one of her favorite meals. The house was quiet, she didn't mind it quiet though. She was used to it and found it quite calming.
'Do you want to go on a run after dinner?' Dawn's voice broke through Nova's thoughts causing her to jump slightly.
A smile quickly spread across her face as she took another bite and replied, 'I would love to.'Dawn's responding scream of excitement caused Nova to wince. 'Did you have to do that? You are literally in my head.'
Dawn giggled and said, 'Sorry I just got excited. This will be the first time we get to feel the grass under our paws. We're so lucky our back yard borders the forest.'
'Agreed.' The two slipped into a peaceful silence as Nova finished eating and then headed out back. She quickly moved to the back gate and slipped out into the forest. Last time her clothes had been shredded because of the shift, so she decided to put some clothes into a bag which she hid behind a bush at the base of a tree not far from the edge of the forest.
Nova took a deep breath as she stared into the dark forest. "Well, I guess this is it. The moment of truth," Her voice filled the air as she took a deep breath before closing her eyes. She remembered how it felt to have four legs. The feeling of her muscles shifting and the sounds and smells that she could pick up. The feeling filled her mind and soon pops filled the air. When silence returned Nova opened her now golden eyes and howled.
The large red wolf lunged forward, the wind blowing through her thick fur as her paws moved softly across the ground. She felt as if she could run forever. Joy filled her heart and mind, it was stronger than anything she had ever felt before.
Movement to her left attracted her eye and she saw a wolf. It was gray and smaller than her, but it was a beautiful creature. Nova slowed down so that it could keep up and soon she saw more wolves running with them. Running alone had been exhilarating, but running with the pack was beautiful.
Eventually, she decided it was time to head home and she split away from the pack. This new ability was one she could get used to. 'Same. This is amazing,' Dawn's voice was soft as she agreed with Nova.
