The car ride was pretty silent, not an uncomfortable one, they were both just in thought. When they turned onto a new-looking road, Jay finally spoke up by saying, "Welcome to the new center of the Silvermoon Pack. Not everyone in the pack live here, only about 150. Our pack has about 200 members in total." Nova's eyes widened in shock but Jay continued, "Don't worry you won't have to meet them all until you join the pack and we won't do that ceremony until you're ready."
Nova released a breath and asked, "So what is life like for a normal pack member?"
Jay glanced over at her before responding, "Well, for kids and teens we go to school just like normal people, except we are typically homeschooled from age 11 to 13. That is the average time people shift so a lot of changes happen during that time and we have just found it easier to homeschool so we can teach self-discipline. Once we are out of high school, it is still very much like human life except we tend to stay inside of pack territory so no one travels super far. There are still cases in which we travel to another territory to attend school, but that requires the permission of both Alphas.
"We get normal jobs and live pretty normal lives, shift into wolves whenever we want. Werewolves do tend to stick close to the pack heart, or in other words wherever the alpha and other pack leaders are." Jay paused for a second before adding, "Well, all members of the pack have individual duties or chores which help keep the pack running and all are required to have some form of physical training."
The idea of the different duties piqued Nova's interest as she further inquired, "What kind of duties are there?"
"Well, there are things like kitchen and cleaning duties which are typically on rotation. There are a few wolves who have asked to work in the kitchen closer to full time and there are some who are exempt from those two simply because of other tasks. We have warriors who help to guard and protect the pack from any danger. We have different people who specialize in different trades like electricity, plumbing, and weaving. Of course, every pack has a doctor or two. You met ours, Dr. Wains. Then there are the leaders, other organizers, and caretakers."
Nova's eyes were wide as she tried to digest all the information Jay was throwing at her before summarizing, "So basically, you have someone who can do anything you may need or at least someone who could organize the project to get it done?"
Jay chuckled and said, "Yeah, you could say it like that."
"So what kind of training does everyone have to do?" Nova's next question came after only a small moment of silence.
He glanced over at her with a playful smirk and asked, "Ya wanna see? We are gonna pass the training grounds."
Nova shrugged, "Sure why not. Although don't ask me to train or anything, because I am not dressed for that." Jay didn't respond to her, but simply chuckled at her comment. About 5 minutes later, he was pulling up outside a large rectangular-shaped building.
Nova followed Jay out of the car and through the front doors and right up to the front desk. The guy behind the desk looked up from his computer, "What can I do for ya Jay?"
"I need a set of training gear for the little lady here," Jay announced and caused Nova's eyes to widen before glaring at him. Jay looked back at her and laughed before saying, "What?! We'll just do something light, nothing that'll ruin your hair or makeup."
Nova rolled her eyes at him and said, "Fine, but I am gonna kick your butt."
Jay grinned and said, "You may know your way around the woods quite well, but this is my territory now." His statement caused Nova to scoff before turning her attention back to the guy who was watching them with amusement.
Seeing them turning back to him, the guy said, "Ok, if you two would just follow me to the equipment room we should be able to find something that'll fit."
As Nova looked through the clothes they had, she wondered what Jay had in mind exactly. Finally, she decided on a simple pair of black shorts and a green cami top. It was cute and still wasn't too revealing. After they had thanked the guy, whose name was Ted, and both changed Nova found herself following Jay out the back of the building.
In front of her was a massive track that was about 12 lanes wide. However, the outside 6 lanes had an obstacle course that looked like it could be fun but would also be killer. Jay's voice broke her from her thoughts as he proudly announced, "This is a part of the training grounds. There are two large gyms in the building and the warriors either spar in the middle of the track, out in the woods, or in sparing rooms inside. The obstacle course was actually finished about two days ago so I actually haven't run it yet. First time?"
Her eyes widened as his eyes turned expectantly to her. Her eyes narrowed at him but he opened his mouth and pleaded back, "Oh come on, it'll be fun. Plus didn't you say you were gonna kick my butt?"
Nova sighed and closed her eyes for a second and Dawn spoke up, 'Let's show him what we are made of!'
That brought a small smirk to Nova's face and before she could back down she told Jay, "Ok, let's get this party started then."
A massive grin filled Jay's face as he led the way to the start of the obstacle course. He glanced at her and asked, "Would you like a slight head start?"
For some reason, the question caused something inside of her to roar to life and she felt Dawn coming forward slightly. Nova looked over at Jay as she felt power flood through her veins. His eyes widened when their eyes met and Nova declared, "I am good, thanks though."
It took Jay a second to respond, but eventually, he nodded with a smile before looking around and calling someone over. A couple around Jay's and Nova's age came over and looked at Jay and Nova in surprise while the guy asked, "You two racing?"
As they approached, Nova caught a whiff of his scent and recognized it as Jay said, "Ya bet we are Matt. Can you start us off?"
Before either, Matt or the girl he was with could respond, Nova exclaimed, "Wait Matt as in brown wolf from the woods Matt?!"
Matt grinned, "Yup that's me! I am actually kind of surprised you remembered."
Nova rolled her eyes and said, "Dude, you were literally the first werewolf I met. How could I forget? Well, either way, nice to see you again."
"Nice to see you again too," then Matt gestured toward the girl he was with and introduced, "and this is Calli, my mate."
As Nova's eyes turned to Calli's she recognized her immediately from cheer and said, "Oh hey! I guess I never did get to ask your name when you tried out. Congrats for making it by the way."
Calli's eyes lit up as she replied, "Yeah, we kind of just jumped right in, didn't we. Thanks for what you did, to convince Olivia to welcome us on."
"Please, Olivia wanted yall on the team. You did everything she asked and one or two things you managed to do even better than some of the girls who are already on the team. Even the Co-captain loved yall! You two were practically on the team before Olivia even asked me," Nova told her.
Before the two girls could continue, Matt spoke up, "Anyways, are you two ready to start?"
Nova smirked over at Jay to find him smirking back. They both nodded at the same and Matt announced, "Alrighty then. Get ready."
Nova turned to face the course in front of her and felt Dawn step forward once more.
"Get set."
The power that had flooded through her veins before once more filled her. Nova and Dawn felt more unified than they had ever been before and a pure sense of calm focus filled her mind.
"Go!"
