Emma was an artist. She had been painting for as long as she could remember. Her paintings weren’t obviously always good. But you have to make mistakes to learn. For that she went all the way to Windsor’s school of arts. It took her 30 minutes to get there on a bus. But it was worth it.
Emma liked painting. It was the only part of her life she was sure about. Not that her life was one big drama. It’s just that unlike family she knew her painting process and what she expected of it.
Her connection with the family was not easy. Her mother was a teacher and her dad – a dentist. They were a simple family and could not understand such a profession as artist. Especially not her mother. How hard she tried to convince her daughter to relocate her efforts on some science or else.
On the other hand Emma does not see much of her father. He works almost 24/7 and sometimes she doesn’t see him for weeks. He’s fun to talk to though when she can snatch a minute or two with him from his daily routine.
That’s why that particular day she wasn’t so keen on going home. It will be just the same talk with her mum at home as always. So she decided to take a minute to go in the opposite direction and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. And now she was taking her sweet time to get home, though the weather was not all that nice. When is it ever nice in Egham in the beginning of October? But you know what? It’s nicer than another “talk”.
Emma was deep in her thoughts, when suddenly she heard the screeching noise of the car tires rubbing against the road. She turned abruptly only to see the bright lights coming straight at her.
You know, there are two types of people reactions in emergencies. Some just continue to stand there because they are paralyzed by fear. And some are running away as fast as they can.
Well, Emma apparently was the second type, for as soon as she saw the lights, she turned and ran with all her might, without looking where she went. She stopped much later when all the adrenaline got out of her system and she could run no more. And when she did stop a weight of tiredness laid on her shoulders so that she was not able to stand anymore. Her knees buckled and she fell on the ground breathing hard.
