Like a dad with a big beer belly one who hadn't even looked at a treadmill in years, then out of the blue decided now was the good time to get back into shape. The girl felt like he would feel but like a muscle that wants to get stronger they would have to exercise, train and build up that 3rd eye muscle till keeping it open wasn't even a thing anymore. So that's what they did for a month and a half, five days out the week for five to six hours each day they came and did the same thing strengthening there vision. For the first week they could only keep it open for minutes at a time but each day after that there times increased, for the second and third weeks they began to walk around the neighborhood seeing the shabby block through a new eye and by the start of August they were starting there days not at the school but in downtown Detroit.
They were blindfolded but with no metal lock but with a simple black cloth the same as there teacher. They walked among the people with black clothing outlined white with blue bodies, within those first few weeks during there breaks in between there training they learned. They learned that the blue represented a persons spirit, they learned that if the blue was a still blue then the person was alive but if it seemed there whole body was blue and shifting as if it was fire or liquid the they were a spirit, Peters called this the coloring book method he explained living people were inside the lines and the dead are outside.
Day after day, week after week the daily habit of training became so accustomed to them that when peters told them that stamina training was over for the day it through them for a loop.
"Wait What"
Rebecca said slightly shocked.
"You two heard me, you've both got a strong grasp of your 3rd eye you can keep it open for two straight hours before getting fatigued that's good"
Peters stood stretched out and sat again.
"If you feel you need more training do it on your own time you have enough experience now that you can train alone without fear of hurting yourselves, now that you have that experience we can move on to the next step"
"And what would this next step be"
Chimed Anya fully reclined in her seat, blindfolded but managing to watch Netflix on her phone.
"The next step is about your side arm now pay attention"
Anya sat up locked her phone, closed her eye and removed her blindfold. Rebecca did the same but she was playing on a old Game Boy SP and cut it off furiously after just losing to Ganondorf for the third time.
"Side arms we talking guns or more like a spirit gun"
Rebecca said while undoing her blindfold.
"Well if you want to be technical a little bit of both"
He responded.
"All ushers need two things while on the job, 1. a eye cover and 2. a totem"
"A.. totem"
Anya questioned.
"Yes a totem is to a usher what a gun is to a police officer, it is are last resort are protection, a extension of ourselves and every usher needs one"
"Ok so how do we get one"
Asked Rebecca.
"Well the upside is you don't have to spend money on it you just have to find it"
"What"
Remarked the girls in confusion as Peters sighed rubbing his chin.
"A totem is a item that has to have deep significant value to the usher, this deep connection added with your 3rd eye makes a totem, y'all need one to protect yourself and others and eliminate distorted spirits"
They heard but didn't absorb it they stared at him like lost little children, he sighed again rubbing his full face now.
"Look this is mine"
He raised his hand and in between his two fingers was the pacifier. The babies binky he held in his hand before he struck them, it had been so long since they saw it that they had completely forgotten but at laying eyes on it again brought back the very uncomfortable memories.
"I'm hundred percent positive I don't need to remind you what you felt after I grasped it in my hand"
He didn't they remembered crystal clear the pressure they felt the pain after they were hit that experience wouldn't be forgotten for years to come.
"Well this pacifier means a lot to me"
For a very brief second his eyes were sad but they snapped back just as quick, the girls noticed it but didn't feel it was right to bring it up.
"And my deep connection to this makes it my totem, back when I hit you both if you two were a distorted spirit then I would have done some serious damage but lucky for you two I'm nice"
They weren't comforted by this whatever he did still hurt but now his words made some since.
"So we have to go find something that means a lot to us and make that are totem"
Rebecca asked.
"Yes but it can't be your favorite pair of slippers or a movie you really like but something that is a part of your soul, a item that impacted your life memories tied to you both good ones and bad ones"
In that moment they both saw an image of there items in there minds, items that truly meant a lot good and bad strapped to them and baggage lots and lots of baggage with them too.
"So I want you to take the remainder of today and tomorrow to find it and come Thursday have them ready, with that said class is dismissed"
It took Anya 45 minutes to get home, 10 minutes to use the bathroom and freshen up, 20 minutes to eat another 5 minutes to go back to the bathroom and with the rest of her time she sat on her bed and stared. She stared at a flimsy brown box for more then 2 hours, what was in the box is what she needed, the totem that Peters was speaking about a item of deep importance she knew what her would be it's been in the same old box for years now it never left the box it was in.
From state to state ever since the divorce that box is where it stayed.
"Bing"
A chime could be heard.
"Bing Bing"
A second and now a third one Anya broke first losing the starring contest with the box. Her phone was lit up on her nightstand the person texting her was Rebecca, the two of them had swapped numbers early on believing they could use it to talk about class and the lessons they learned. But since the only thing they did for a moth was stamina training there was no need to converse outside of class.
{Hey}
Her first text read.
{I know where my totem thing is going to be}
{But I can't get it alone was wondering if you could help with getting it}
Without thinking she responded.
{Yes 4 sure}
{When}
A minute passed and then Rebecca's next message hit.
{Tomorrow around 11 am meet me at the Uhaul storage center at the edge of 8 mile and Lennox}
{I'll be there}
Anya texted back Hastily, [it could wait] she thought the time would come when she would have to open that box but it wasn't today it could wait until tomorrow, tomorrow for sure.
