David was excited but quickly calmed himself down. He took a deep breath and started to adjust his posture.
*Fuuuu~*
His breath could be heard on the entire colosseum.
A calm aura spilled out of him, it didn't fill the entire colosseum, but it was long enough where even Gluri could sense it. He was clearing his mind, and it was being perfected on the spot!
'A technique breakthrough without even actually starting real practice!?' Gluri thought he had talent, but this kid in front of him...
Envy!
'Motherfucker! The hell have I been doing these past few decades is all going to be passed by this kid in around a few months... at most!' He had seen how strong geniuses who were able to gain such strong epiphanies were.
David opened his eyes, slowly getting used to the 'enlightened' feeling of a weapon in his grasp.
"I'm ready!"
Gluri could very obviously see that his eyes were brightening.
"Mn! Since you've mastered the stances, let's start doing different attacks in those stances. You must be able to move the stances into one another, flowing through the battle, being short and long-ranged. Understood?"
Gluri suddenly got into the front stance, holding his staff in front of him.
"Understood!"
David quickly copied him.
Gluri began to do a set of attacks, each one carrying a large aura, waiting to be released.
*Whoosh~ Whoosh~ Whoosh~*
Each attack being able to be flexible to attack every part of the body, yet also hard enough to do substantial amounts of damage to the enemy.
David was copying as much as he could but was sweating from the number of different movements there were.
'Ok... it should've been similar... but there's no way martial artists in my past life would do this... right?'
David panted, holding his form, waiting for Gluri to move again.
From strikes to strikes, to stabs and turns, jumps, and everything in between.
"You keeping up?" Gluri asked, holding the staff behind him.
"Yes, although barely... aren't there supposed to be... spin techniques as well?"
David panted, stabbed the staff into the ground. Yes, his stamina had increased by a large margin, the concentration and mental power you need to persist is quite tiring.
"There is... I just wanted to give you a few basic attacks first. I may have gotten a bit carried away, my bad." Gluri apologized.
"We'll start the other techniques then."
Gluri pushed the staff to be parallel to the floor and started to spin the staff in place.
'Ok, something that almost everyone did back then as a kid...' David copied, but at a much slower speed.
"Good... but your hold is wrong. There are a few hand positions, the normal hold, where you would hold around the middle third of the staff, one palm up, the other down. This is also the position you'll be using the most."
"Then, for the second position, the narrow hold, where it's nearly the same as the normal hold, but the spacing is only about a fist length, like this." He stopped spinning to show him.
David looked at the difference between the first and the second, nodding along.
"Then, for the third position, the wide hold, again, the same thing about one palm up, one down. The spacing is around... two-thirds of the staff. This is also a common stance for more defining strikes or blocking/parrying." He explained.
Mr. Gluri had even demonstrated a few strikes and stances that would work with the staff.
David nodded, ingraining everything he said.
"Now, try and do that first spinning technique I demonstrated with the narrow hold." Gluri ordered.
David nodded, staring at the staff, adjusted his hands and planted his feet, and began to spin the staff.
*Whoosh~*
It was slow at first, but as time went on, it became faster and faster, until it reached the point like Gluri, making an afterimage of a full circle.
For Gluri who only knew some more intermediate techniques, this was quite the shock to him.
'I'm not going to have anything staff techniques left to teach him by the end of this week? Where the hell did the Vale pick him up!?' His face visibly darkened.
Gluri was quite known for being competitive, even towards students. It's what constantly helps him improve, even if they are stronger and younger, he still wouldn't give up, though he would be quite jealous of their talent.
"Good, now stabilize that speed for a few more seconds!" Gluri shouted.
"Understood!" He replied.
*Whoosh~*
A few seconds later, David abruptly stopped the staff, and skillfully stabbed the ground, sweating.
"I'm done, professor!" He said.
Gluri nodded, "Mn. I'll show you a few more basic spinning techniques, with your talent, we should have some time for sparring."
Gluri began to show an array of moves, spinning overhead, around him, around the sides, while David was watching earnestly.
'Using that hold there... foot pointing there...' David was taking mental notes as Gluri demonstrated.
*Swoosh~*
After the last technique, which ended with a hard thrust that pierced the air, Gluri spun the staff to be behind him.
David snapped out of his daze, nodding, "I understand!"
He gripped his staff, took a few steps back, and started training.
He started slow, yet steady, then as his proficiency with the techniques taught to him became higher, his pace and overall speed had increased.
Very quickly, he was able to pick up on one technique, then another, and another, and another.
Looking at how fast he was progressing, Mr. Gluri couldn't help but sigh, 'I really envy talents like you. I barely count as above average in his realm of comprehension. It's only about a matter of time before he surpasses me.' He looked at David.
Although there were some mistakes, David had quickly adapted and improved himself, usually getting it right around the second or third time.
A few minutes later...
*Swoosh~*
The sound of a thrust that pierced the air sounded, waking Gluri from his meditation.
