Chapter 4: The Attack

Claire:

Claire was in frenzy. Henry, the guy she’d trusted for years, had turned out to be a traitor. More than that, he’d been sent to kill Mark. She had to find Mark before Henry did. She was looking at him but he disappeared when she turned away for a second. Why was it that when she wanted to avoid him, he came right to her and when she was looking for him, he was nowhere to be found?! She kept looking around, asking people who led her in wildly different directions, trying to find Mark.

She was at the door of his house when her eyes fell upon Henry. He was dressed casually and easily blended in. If she didn’t know him so well, she probably wouldn’t have been able to find him so quickly. She started moving towards him. By the time he saw her, she was already beside. She’d been told to act normal and not let him know that she was aware of his treason.

“Henry, you bailed on me! Why are you here now?!”, she asked him.

“Hey, Clay. I felt bad about ditching you and so I cancelled that meeting and came”, he replied smoothly.

“Thank God! I’ve been here for almost an hour and I haven’t been able to find him. You can help now!” she said a little too enthusiastically, only realizing her mistake after she’d said the words.

“They told you, didn’t they?” he caught on easily.

“You can still choose not to do this, Hen. This isn’t you. Don’t become the guy you’ve always hated” she didn’t bother trying to lie.

“I’m doing this BECAUSE I don’t want to be that person, how can you of all people not see that?” he spat out, “Why are you here Clay? You don’t want to be. You’re here to repay a debt that’s not even yours and yet you’re telling me about choice?”

“Henry, you know he’s the only way we can save everything. How can you even think about killing him?” she said, indigently.

“Is that what they told you? That I’m here to kill him?” he laughed, “I guess we overestimated the organization. They don’t even know what’s going on. That certainly makes things easier.”

Before she could answer that, he took out a gun and fired in the sky. Everyone around them stopped to look at them. The gun made all of them back away. She didn’t even have time to draw hers out; he’d already pointed it at her. She raised up her hands and tried to talk him down.

“Henry, you’re really gonna shoot me? Come on, they’re brainwashing you and you’re becoming their puppet without question!” she shouted.

“This is the only way, Claire. You’ll see!” he said calmly.

He shot her in the chest the moment he stopped talking. She felt the bullet hit her chest. There was nothing but the impact of it on her chest and the feeling of falling. She could hear her name being called from somewhere far away but she couldn’t bring herself to do anything but fall.
