ON THE HUNT.....
"Our town's tradition is taking the names of monsters and sending them straight down to hell...
And so it had been for centuries.
We move in with all smiles, weapons hidden and leave with evil in chains.
We are experts of hunting but in the trenches of this world however, normalcy was at best a relative term.
We move out in numbers, taking hold of the beast by the jaws and then removing it's tongue.
After that then it's easy to subdue and defeat the more monstrous ones but on this night,....
The lingering light that once was were obliterated by the rapid fall of night. The once redeeming sunset formed into a vast expense of jet black, one that engulfed the town and brought with it - the threat of a monster!
The night was warm, the air still and heavy. Thick blankets of cloud covered the moon that hung in the lonely sky. The temperature had dropped at a rather considerable rate and nowhere was there a comforting sound, only sounds such as the loud patters of rain could be heard, a flash and what followed next, the roar of thunder.
This was without a doubt a perfect night for airships to take flight in night sky and on the look out for anything out of the ordinary...For they patrolled.
Suddenly, a shadow sprints down the street and more seemed to follow.
It runs across a puddle of water and it's chasers pursued in the direction as well....
"Unit 5 heading north on crescent, Reporting an incredibly large something" came a feminine voice from chief Aomorii's intercom as her and troops pursued, in the hunt for the thing on the run.
They moved low and fast, leaping from critter to critter taking risks but when there's the risks involved,.... there's always reward and these troops took no chances!
"Unit 9-5, I think I've got eyes on the same thing...holy hell, suspect's too large to be human."
"....Some kind of rabid animal maybe?!" A male voice sounded through the intercom. It was that of the dispatcher's no doubt.
"Trust me...Chief Aomorii responded as her and her troops leapt onto the sides of a building and then made their way to the top, picking up the pace at an instant.
....that's no animal!"
Preparing an ambush, the troops were given hand signals by chief Aomorii herself,.. filtering them out into groups with the sole motive of cutting the creature off it's path.
**MEANWHILE AT THE STONEHAVEN DISPATCH CENTER **
-- Operators within the communication room of the police headquarters sat at the police scanners and radio transmissions.
This room also acted as the junction for all police communications, assisted by the chief of police herself only now that chief of police was in it on the action. She and 14 others were sent across a nightmarishly scarred task, a hunt for the thing on the run.
"Unit 6 to dispatch, we've got a situation downtown...eastern district, multiple fatalities" A female voice sounded through the radio
"Copy!..medics are on route.., the dispatcher replied. Do you have a perp in sight unit 6?!!"
But suddenly there was no response, no sounds came through from her end of the comm link...only that of crackles.
With her right hand pressed against cold steel, the officer or unit 6 as they called her gathered herself through the darkness. Her steps forward were apprehensive shuffles, the dull distant roar of thunder seemed to add to the tension but still, still she mustered up the courage, atleast enough to pull through.
She could hear it now, it's laboured breath that seemed to mix of a low growl and a death rattle - sounds of which made her chest hum
Another step forward......
"Unit 6, do you have a perp in sight?!!" The dispatcher's voice sounded yet again
".....A- affirmative" She responded in a now trembling whisper, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.
"Where are you unit 6?! What's your location?!!" The dispatcher asked, sounding fiercely this time around.
"Eastern district, At the ironworks......
.. It's.....it's still here, it's in here"
"What are you talking about?! What's in there?? Unit 6, do you copy??...what's over there with you?!!"
" A monster.......
Her breath shallowed, her face pale and frightened. She needed to ascertain where in hell this creature had crawled right out of and quick.
She knew it was the monster but she just had to make sure...
Still, she desperately hoped not to get it's attention.
She did check however and what she saw next was enough to send shivers down her spine, was enough to crap anyone's pants as right there in the distance stood a large creature with a logside grin.
It wore an old brown cloak but with the hoodie off.
It stood taller than her with broad shoulders and an intimidating stature. It looked unwordly
It was stationary....
It's hair, a reddish brown mane only a monster as big could pull off.
It's body frame was still vaguely human but that's about all she could see..all she could get as it leered at it's victim with hungry red eyes.
It was tall, atleast six feet,.. probably more.
They believed this but a shadow or a thief and not the horror known only as Griffith.
Amongst the stalkers of those who stayed past wondering hours, it fed on the streets of stonehaven. The muggers and other lesser monsters make it easy to blend in. A wicked creature in wolf's clothing with an appetite to match
And now, now...it was feeding time!
The female officer watched in unfantomable horror as the strange creature took hold of it's prey; an unfortunate young man in his mid twenties whose screams of terrors and pleas rang deaf to the monster's ears and then slowly,....
His hands began to wrinkle.
Grey cob-webbed hair sprouted from his head, paying shock through his bones.
A sudden tightness pulled every muscle on his face and body.
His vision blurred, his skin shriveled and cracked as he lost all his senses
.....as the monster began the draining process, stealing the taiji right out of him.
It does this continuously, taking it's time to ravish in the sweet sensation of power it felt but alas it wasn't enough.
And when it felt there was nothing more to take needless enjoy, it simply let him go... falling to the ground amongst the others, no longer dried up or in a comatose state as usual...only this time left hollow, this time left as an empty husk!
....A really big monster!"
she concluded.
Shortly afterwards, the monster a distance away from her had gotten unusually quiet for some unknown reason and this only seemed to amplify the unease that radiated off the officer, off her like heatwaves and her blood boiling in tension.
"A monster?! Another one??" The dispatcher looked at his fellow partner in confusion before turning his gaze back at the radio transmission and listens further
"...Am looking at it now, it's about 8 yards from me and it's....
...it's what the hell, it's....
"Unit 6 stay on the line with me, what's happening?!!" The dispatcher enquired impatiently.
"...it's.. it's...staring, staring right at me. But it's.... it's perfectly still, staring straight at me.
.... smiling, not moving. Just smiling."
And it was as she told it.....
Standing still and observing quietly was the monster with a menacing smile on it's face.
It's eyes remained focused and clamped onto her as if it stared right down and into her soul, eyes never bothering nor edging to look away. The abundance of its victims had made the air sweeter and it's sense of smell keener, no wonder it could sense a presence nearby....
No wonder it knew she was there!
This monster's appetite needed to be filled and the officer was at that moment in the right place but at the wrong time...
....oh if she only knew how hungry it was
"Can you classify what category it is?!"
"I don't know, I've.... I've never seen anything like this before. I don't think it's in the database or any of the database for that matter... she muttered looking scared as though she had seen indescribable horror, trying not to take her eyes of it even for a second...for she knew in situations such as this, even making the slightest of mistakes could be dire!
"Please....please get someone out here now!" She muttered under her breath.
"Unit 6 remain calm, I've put out the call and an officer is on his way. Stay on with me, everything is going to be fine I assure you" he said in a really comforting voice but even that wasn't enough to soothe the great sense of tension she felt.
"Why...why won't it move?" She began in a trembling whisper"...it won't move, it won't stop staring, it won't stop smiling.
....Oh my God I think it's figured out am here, I think it's going to hurt me.
" Wait a moment, now it's starting to move...n-no, not moving,..rotating. it's rotating"...
"Rotating?!" The dispatcher asked in a confused tone as he listens
"Yes..yes rotating, it's rotating it's finger...it's index finger.
I think it's trying to tell me something. It's telling me...telling me to...turn around??"
And at that moment, another creature revealed itself behind her and the only viable sounds heard next from the radio transmission were low growls, followed by a sudden scream and then silence......
..... total silence!
"What was that unit 6?!..Unit 6?! Unit 6?!"
Charged a new with the officer's stolen life force, the monster took on her form...
It needed this to better fit in amongst the humans,
For it still required more life force to continue it's long life and reign of terror!
....To Be Continued Read next chapter for more thrills and spills on beyond the horizon.
