[30] A Glimpse of 'Normal' (Part 3)

(Malory)

It’s late –it’s dark and cold and late. My house is in complete darkness when I get home from work. I didn’t expect to stay so late but the diner was especially busy tonight.

I unlock the door. I step inside. I switch on the light. I drop my bags. I take off my scarf. I drag my way into the kitchen to get a drink of water.

I just want to sleep.

I head straight to my room. I flop onto my bed –I didn’t even attempt to put the light on.

I lie there in silence and close my eyes for about three minutes.

I feel myself drifting… drifting… drifting… when-

-THUD!

My eyes open suddenly.

I jump off my bed in a hassle and come to a stand.

The thudding doesn’t stop –it’s coming from downstairs.

Someone’s in my house?

I pace the floors searching blindly in the dark of my room for something –anything.

Anything that can be used as a weapon…

If I switch the light on, I’d immediately make myself a target.
