He gives me one last cheeky smile before leaving, and every interaction between him and my mother makes me turn away to cringe.

Olivia and Ron, by the end of it all, are struck with complete silence and have decided to take the discussion of the night’s events up to my bedroom.

I message Kyle.

Me: Are you okay? Are you safe? Are you alive?

AnusPainUs: I am home.

Me: But are you okay? Are you safe? Are you alive?

AnusPainUs: Is my uncle still there?

Me: He just left. Don’t worry. Nothing out of the ordinary happened –I just got a general idea of how his madness works, mentally.

AnusPainUs: He can’t become a regular visitor, Malory. I won’t let that happen.

Me: I’m handling it well, okay? He’s asking all the right questions, I’m giving him the right answers. I know how his brain works. Sadly, his way of thinking is a lot like mine. I’m a little disgusted by the thought of it, but I think it’s also a good thing. I can handle him.
