Lengths of Trust [7]

(Olivia)

“And by God,” I say, “It was on nights most dark, most silent, most lonely and cold, when he came to me. And on those nights, I swear by God, I felt nothing less than entirely myself. I felt entirely whole. He didn’t protect me. He let me protect my spirit.”

“And, regretfully, I let her go,” Ron says, “I let her go when I was beginning to love her most.”

At this point in the play, both Angus and Valerie are standing on separate sides of the stage –a spotlight shining down on them as they consider and express their feelings for each other to the audience. This happens after Angus finds out she’s the daughter of a Lord. He leaves her with a regretful letter of farewell, fearful that she would reject him when she finds out he’s a bastard son.
