(Malory)

There’s a knock on the front door. I open it to find Kyle staring down at the door mat. When he sees me, he stares for a moment.

“I made ramen, would you like some?” I ask, walking back inside and heading to the kitchen.

He watches as I walk away, and then follows behind me. “Where’s Grey?”

“Why?” I ask, reaching into the dish drainer for two bowls.

“I need to ask him something.”

“Grey’s out,” I tell him.

There’s a thud from the top of the staircase and Grey stumbles down, yawning.

“Does he know?” Kyle asks me.

“Does he know what?”

“Malory, now’s not the time to act stupid,” he says.

“I guess you don’t want any ramen,” I say, putting the bowl back into the dish drainer. “The living room’s empty, you can go sit there in the meantime.”

He pushes me towards the corner and blocks any escape I have to leave. He leans in. He speaks softly.

“Malory,” he says, sombre, “What happened?”
