I turn from the road to the driveway leading to the house. It's funny how 24 hours sometimes feel like more than one day, more than one life. The Liam who left yesterday was a different person from the parallel universe from the Liam who returned here today.
There is one more car parked in front of the house. I look at it like that will make it disappear alongside the person who drove it here. My gut sinks. It was such a great weekend. Why?
“Duncan is here.” I tell her.
She nods trying to hide the disappointment. She only met him once and even that was enough. My brother has that effect on people. Although our mother is firmly convinced that deep down there is a nice person here. He stands in the window, overarching the entrance, waves as we make eye contact. Madison is pulling out our hiking gear out of the car.
“Let me do it.” She smiles and steps out of the way grabbing her baggage.
