Facing her punishment (2)

She let the words sink in, taking them as a joke until she saw her brother's unwavering expression.

"I'm sorry, sister. I can't do this anymore." He told her, despite knowing how broken she would be.

She gasped in disbelief. "Sorry? Why? Are you abandoning me"

"I can't believe that's how you would take it." He shook his head.

"You helped me through my darkest times, brother." She whimpered. "But if you leave me now, I might become mortal. I don't want to suffer like all these mortals! I don't want to grow old…to die."

He couldn't believe that was all she cared about. If she wanted to live so badly, she should never have broken the rules she knew would cost her immortality.

She grabbed his arm. "You have to help me. You've already done the hardest part." She forced a frail smile. "I know you can do it.  You have grandmother's locket. If you change just one detail in the past or present, I won't have to die."
