INTERLUDE --- 5

Katherine sent everything on her desk crashing to the floor with a wave of her hand. Anger coursed in her veins.

Twenty five years of throwing herself into her work wasted and she had nothing to show for it. She could not provide anything useful to her superiors.

She knew she would probably be fired soon after her project is shut down and everything she had put all her time and energy to is swept under the rug.

Katherine Olsen, the lead scientist in a secret government project that was developed to find effective way of fighting and defeating willers. But this was more personal for Katherine.

Twenty seven years ago, she had gotten into a car accident while driving her two year son in the back. The cause of the accident were two willers slugging it out in the middle of the highway.

Her son died instantly and Katherine suffered damage to her uterus. Her heart turned at the memory as she remembered the doctor telling her that she could not longer have children.

Katherine's life came to a standstill. Her husband divorced her when he couldn't get her to stop grieving after a year. She lost all ties with her friends and family.

And just it looked like she was going to die sad and alone. The US government offered her the job of her dreams, it fueled a new desire in her life; revenge.

After twenty five years, she probably knew more about willers than any other human in the world but her employers had been patient enough, they wanted results and she had little or nothing to fine them. There were still a couple of things science didn't understand about the will energy.

She sniffed to hold back tears, she wondered what she was supposed to do with her life if she got fired.

"Uh..Dr Olsen?" A voice came from the open door. It was on of her subordinates, his eyes darting around the disordered office.

She blinked back tears that were already forming behind her glasses. "Something I can help you with, Stewart?

"Um.. yeah, there had been a new development in the lab, you should come see it."

Hope flared in her mind as she hurried out of her office towards the lab.

It was in total chaos, technicians are running around and adjusting controls. "Energy levels are unstable." One yelled out.

Katherine looked through the protective glass to see what was causing all the ruckus. It was one of the test subjects. A boy of about fifteen, he was the last of her test subjects after the rest died when their bodies couldn't withstand the extreme procedures they went through. This boy was pronounced dead thirty minutes ago but now he was squirming among all the tubes what were attached to his body. His face expression showed that he was in extreme pain but the most extra ordinary thing about him was that he was glowing.

Katherine's body tensed in excitement. 'A full transference.' she had done it, she had successfully modified a human being to hold the will energy.

"He literally woke up from the dead seven minutes ago." Stewart informed from behind her. "The will energy he is radiating is overwhelming, we are struggling to get accurate readings. Our biologists say his senses have been dialed up to ten including pain receptors and his body is not responding to any of the tranquilizers or painkillers we have been trying to dose him with."

"Extraordinary." Katherine said in a low voice. She did not miss the disgusted look Stewart shot her but she didn't care. She has been getting looks like that since the beginning of this project.

The human child's condition should be affecting her but she had learned to kill that part of herself, she needed to know how to admire dangerous things.

"Energy levels are reaching critical." Someone called out. The boy opened his mouth as if to scream but there was no audible sound. There was nothing visible in his mouth except golden light.

"Internal organs failing." Somebody else called out just as golden cracks began to appear on his skin.

"Shut him down now." A technician was struggling with his interface. "Energy levels are beyond critical."

"No." Katherine said hut she could not hear her own voice above the chaos.

"Oh my God, he is going to blow." Stewart gasped as the cracks interlocked like a broken China cup.

"Get down." Someone shouted just before Katherine was tackled to the ground from behind, probably Stewart.

Even behind closed eyes she could see the bright light that tore through the lab like an earthquake.

Despite the destruction and chaos, she smiled, her revenge was at hand.
