Chapter 9: Escape

A couple of days passed by slowly. Kaico had been hopeful that her family might not keep her locked away. But stubbornly they continued, she had begged every person who came to bring her book. She thought for a moment she had Lucas convinced, his face had wavered under her intense pleading. But atlas their father came in and Lucas was sent away.

Instead, Kaico hoarded little bits of her food. She figured she would need them once she got out. Her older two brothers and mother were receptive to her basic needs. Luckily, if she asked for more to eat they generally complied, to a point. Unfortunately, the younger two were as belligerent as ever. Sometimes they fed her, and other times they chose to eat her food before it got to her.

The only other past time she had was to stare out the window at the rolling hills.

She knew her family would be moving very soon. Her brothers spent more time around the house, and much less out in the mines. For once she wished that everyone would go to the mines, then she would have a chance to escape. Her family knew this though and always left someone in the house.

She tried one night to obtain the resources to make a pickaxe, she had waited till nightfall and then chipped away at the floor.

She was discovered quickly, and Kaden took all her wood away from her. Later she heard him muttering to their parents about how wayward she had become.

She knew now that no one would trust her the slightest bit. The moving process sped up.

She was beginning to feel hopeless.

But then, as she was ready to give in entirely, one late evening came her chance.

Kaico saw a form out of the plains. She dared not hope it was who she thought it might be. Then with a rush of joy, she realized it was an ender.

An ender holding a melon.

The Ender turned once on the spot and disappeared, reappearing closer to the house. Kaico thought about calling to them. But before she could they disappeared again.

Feeling despair again Kaico realized that Enderly wouldn't be able to see or hear her. A scream of frustration rose in her throat, and then she punched the glass window. It shattered.

She stepped back in surprise.

Enderly reappeared outside the house. She thrust herself half out the window and looked down on them. "Enderly, up here." She said as loud as she dared.

Then she listened. No one was running yet.

Enderly disappeared and reappeared in her room. She cringed at how loud the teleportation sound they produced was. They tilted their head at her.

She felt tears come to her eyes. "I didn't mean to leave you Enderly. My brother took me in the night." Kaico told them, "they are going to move me, can you please help me escape here."

Enderly took a step closer, then Kaico remembered her book.

"My parents took my building book though, I'm sorry." She told Enderly.

Before Kaico could say anything else, Enderly chirped loudly and disappeared, that was when Kaico heard the pounding footsteps.

"There's an ender in the house!" One of her brothers yelled.

There were shouts of surprise from the others. She bit her lip, they were running upstairs to where Enderly and Kaico were.

"Enderly," she yelled at the door. She no longer cared how loud she was. She knew she would get her brother's attention.

Suddenly, Enderly reappeared with that book, but at the same moment, the door swung open. Asher charged in taking a swing at Enderly and hitting them.

Enderly cried out.

"Stop it, Asher, please," Kaico begged.

Enderly didn't attack him, instead, they reached out toward Kaico, she tried to get to him but was forced to duck suddenly under an arrow.

"Go Enderly, get out of here!" She yelled.

She couldn't let her friend get hurt, not after they'd saved her. If they hadn't went to get the book, or if Kaico hadn't broken the window in the first place then nothing would have happened. It had been impulsive, she couldn't let them pay for that. Kaico dove toward her brothers trying to put herself between.

"Stop it, stop it!" She yelled.

She felt something on her shoulder and the world seemed to spin. Then they were out in rolling plains, staring back at the house.
