Chapter Four: Freedom

My head slammed into the leather seat. Slowly blinking my eyes, orientating my eyes to the light that raided the window and invaded my space, I sat up. Looking at my stomach, it was patched up, or where the wound was. Glancing over at the driver seat, Sammy was snoring. Curious to see where I was, I stepped out the car, and into sand. On all sides, emptiness, except for a well. Approaching it, I put my palm on the upper most brick. It felt smooth, like a marble floor, but it was also cold. Confused, I looked at the sky, and moved my hand, baking it in the sun. It was awfully hot. A brick cold like a night breeze, but it's surrounded by an oven's heat, I didn't get it. Remembering the monsters I ran into when last outside the wall, I made my way back to the car, and sat in the passenger seat beside Sammy. Her head fell sideways, looking at me. For heavens sake, she's drooling! 'God it's hot,' someone thrust their finger in my side, 'OW!' I hollered in pain.

Sammy opened her eyes widely, 'See, perfect partner material!'

'And hows that?

She poked my wound again, 'You're still alive aren't you.'

I flinched from the pain, 'Kinda wish I died now,' I looked at her eyes slowly lose colour. 'Did I say die? I mean-' my eyes darted out the car window, and I spotted a figure off in the distance. 'Hey, I saw something,' suddenly, I felt her put her weight on my back.

'Where?'

I rolled the window down. I'm suprised for the style of this car, it has an old window crank to open 'em. Now pointing out, my finger lead from the tip, to a blurry figure.

'Oh no.' She sounded afraid.

'Sammy, what the hell do you mean by "Oh no?" ' I struggled to turn and look at her, shifting under her weight, and she seemed to actually be afraid. Her posture, calm. Like that quote, "calm before the storm" or something. Now that I think of it, how can I not recall my name, or personal memories, but I can remember a quote.

Sammy raced into the driver seat, and tried to start it, but the engine kept stopping dead. 'Come on you old piece of shit!' She hit her fist against the dashboard repeatedly.

Looking back at the figure, it disappeared. 'Oh no,' before my eyes, a shadow loomed onto the sandy plains. Turning to look out Sammy's window, like that worm hybrid creature I saw once before, this one soar taller up into the air. At once, I heard a loud roar. 'Sammy.'

She licked her lips.

'Sammy,' I said more panicked now.

She strained her eyes.

'Sammy!' The engine started, and she floored it.

'And were outta here!'

Something loud hit the ground, and the sound of sand being tossed pursued us. Sticking my head out the window to see what this creature looked like. I wanted to gouge my eyes out. Long like that worm creature, wider than our car. Unlike a worm, it had legs. Not like a centipedes, but of a spider. 'Why the fuck, does it have to be spider-legs!' It made and awful noise with its mouth. What made this monster worse, is it had a singular eye, quite large, no visible ears. Its mouth was much like an ants mandibles, probably ot pock up things to eat, like out car. To follow up with its horrid noise, it shot out a strain of acid, traveling fast, and hitting the car's side mirror.

Sammy slammed her foot on the brakes, turning the wheel rapidly before letting go of the brake and once more, she slammed her foot on the gas. Looking at her rear mirror, she clenched her teeth.

'Is it me, or is this desert endless!'

'Well not excatly.'

'What do you even mean!?' I looked out the window once more, just to see the large monster burrow underneath the surface. 'Ph do these monsters even have names!'

'Nope.' She said cheerfully.

'Why so cheerful?'

'Unlike other organisms on Earth, who are plentiful and have names, these are mutations of those creatures.' She took another drift turn. 'Easier to remember 'em knowing they don't have names.'

That has to be the worse logic I've heard.

'Oh!'

The large monster came up from our right, tried to hit us, but luckily Sammy dodge it. Missing, it went back underneath the sand.

'To answer your question from earlier,' she raised her right arm, and pointed at obscenely large wall, stretching as far right back left.

'How'd I miss that?' In saying that, I heard us slowly gaining more speed. 'Wait, your not gonna ram us into that wall!'

She lowered her visor, took the shades Dale had there, and put 'em on. 'Hell yeah.'

I buckled myself in. 'Death by worm or a serial killers suicide wish....I hate life.' The monster rammed it's face into the back of the car, and threw out car at the wall. Flying through the air, I pushed my self back into the seat, while also gripping the dashboard, 'WE'RE GONNA DIE!!!' I cried out.

Sammy laughed, 'Dumb worm, we're free now!'

With my widened eyes, I looked at Sammy, and back at the wall. In a moment's time, we flew right through the wall, and slammed into the side of an old, worn skyscraper. I groaned in pain. 'What happened.' I unbuclked myself out my seat, and tumbled out the door, and onto the floor.

Sammy kicked out the window and joined me. She giggled.

'How was any of that enjoyable?' I rolled on my side and looked at her.

She copied. 'Don't you see, we're free! Freedom! No bars to hold us in! No law!'

'I'm still incredibly lost. I wake up, and two days later, I'm wounded, bones aching, and lying beside a serial killer.' Turning onto my back, I placed my arm over my eyes. 'Yay,' I said sarcastically, 'Freedom.' I heard someone pump their shotgun.

'Welcome outsiders, ready to taste freedom?'
