Soo-Ah slithered away from the table and slowly closed the door hoping to eavesdrop on more details. The last thing she caught in her ears was Ho-Orabeoni trying to get out of the uncomfortable discussion by changing the subject.
"So, master, have you received any report about the Tang troops closing in on our –" and the door was shut.
Making herself ready for bed, Soo-Ah remembered her grandfather's drunk face and giggled. He was funny. It was the first time she had seen him in this state, though she knew he enjoyed a cup of soju from time to time, in moderation. However, there was another reason that made it impossible for her to rest as she tossed and turned in her bed long into the night.
What were grandfather and Ho-Orabeoni discussing in such hushed voices at the table, and why did they close the door behind her when she left the room? And why did Ho-Orabeoni look so red in the face?
"Something must be going on and I need to find out what," was Soo-Ah's only conclusion and she rose from the bed, determined. There was no sleep to be had anyway.
With a plan taking shape in her innocent head, she snuck out and headed to Ho-Orabeoni's room by taking the route at the back of the house, just in case someone was still awake and in the courtyard. When she reached the back wall of his room at the end of the building, she noticed light coming through the high-window. Her attention was suddenly drawn to the courtyard from where she heard the main gate hinge screech. Leaning from behind the wall she squinted her eyes to catch sight of a shadow approaching Ho-Orabeoni's room. The shadowed figure must have seen the light shine through the translucent paper covering the lattice on his door. At this hour his room was the only one lit up.
Now, where could she remain hidden and spy on what was going on inside Big Brother's room?
There – under his window were some large crates awaiting the upcoming harvest, stuck one on top of the other, making for an easy climb. Carefully pulling herself on top of the boxes, which was a piece of cake compared to all the climbing she did in the trees, Soo-Ah reached the narrow window frame. Lacing her fingers through the lattice grates she spied on Ho-Orabeoni, pacing, looking preoccupied, and from time to time stretching his injured shoulder.
A swift knock and his posture stiffened. Ho-Orabeoni answered and stepped aside, allowing the stranger to enter his chamber. Once inside and the door closed, the mysterious person removed the cape. Soo-Ah opened her mouth, stupefied. "It's a woman. I've never seen her before."
"What is your name?" Ho-Orabeoni asked in a cold tone.
"It is Mei, Young Master. May I let myself in?" she asked from where stood, close to the door.
Avoiding her gaze, and with awkward gestures, he nodded his head.
"So, he does not know her either...but what would a strange girl do in his roooo...." Soo-Ah did not manage to process the thought. The woman slowly advanced to the center of the room, removing her garments. She turned to face him with her bare bosom.
Hesitating, Ho-Orabeoni slowly walked towards her until they were so close he could have bent to brush his nose with hers. He stood tall, with broad shoulders and chest swaying under heavy breaths, like the ebb and flow of the river. Faster and faster. His gaze began to move as well, travelling lower and remaining latched on the woman's perky breasts. There was something to their round appetising flesh, the way they stood with pink aureole jutting in the air, teasing for a touch to come find them. Without hesitation, he grabbed one and squeezed it, making the woman utter a small cry. But the enjoyment on his face remained.
Soo-Ah stood paralyzed not understanding what she was seeing. What was Big Brother going to do to that woman? Why did he pinch her chest and hurt her?
With his hand still in place, the young master pushed his guest towards his bed. When her feet knocked against the bed frame, she clumsily sat on the sheets. Her discomfort was clear from the little tremble of her fingers when she raised her hands to touch him. Her face still showed no fear. Before she could touch him, Ho-Orabeoni pushed her hand away.
With quick and expert gestures, he reached for his breeches and loosened them, partially pulling them down in one single motion. He was standing right in front of the woman, the worm between his legs enlarged and upright as if it aimed to reach the ceiling.
Soo-Ah gasped and covered her mouth to diffuse any sound. Her gaze slowly turned to shock. She was caught between innocent curiosity and terrifying fear and disgust. The shock pinned her in place but she considered if she should climb down to get some help for the poor woman. She was being attacked.
Soo-Ah tried to shift in place but she found that when she turned her face, her eyes remained glued in the same spot. The bulging out of Ho-Oraboni's crotch, looked stirred and menacing.
She could still remember the baths she took with Jung-In when they were small children. She knew they were different in more ways than one. But back then, Jung-In's thing looked limp and unthreatening, dangling like a little worm out of its nest. How could a little worm turn into such a monstrosity, not unlike Uncle's wooden rod?
The woman in the room looked just as terrified by the sight of it. But Ho-Orabeoni would not back down. Instead, he came closer to the woman's face.
"Mouth open, tongue out," he commanded, his voice deep, dark and coarse.
A little disconcerted, the woman obeyed, stretching out her tongue and barely touching his member. A sigh escaped his lips and he turned wilder. He clenched his fist in her hair and pulled her closer to him. The monster between his legs could no longer be seen, but the woman struggled, pushing against him as if she wanted to brace herself.
She kept her gaze locked on his as he began to move his hips. Tears gathered in her reddened eyes. She choked, gasping for air. Ho-Orabeoni would not let go, his face turning red, his breathing laboured, a strange savageness glazed over his gaze.
Why didn't he let her go? She didn't like this, did she? Why was he hurting her? Soo-Ah kept asking herself, growing more desperate to do something. To help the girl.
When the young master finally unclasped his hand from the woman's hair and pulled out, she was gasping for air as if she had been suffocating. But the raging monster was still attached to Ho-Orabeoni, looking stiffer and more menacing than ever. He took off his shirt and lowered to whisper something in her ear. Not waiting for a reply, he shoved her on the bed and moved over her. Whatever vicious thing he was doing to her, it was now concealed by the bed curtains.
Soo-Ah could no longer see, but she heard. The bed squeaked, the mattress moved, and from the woman's moans a barely audible "please" could be deciphered. What he was doing to her must have been so vicious and still, Ho-Orabeoni continued to hurt her. The pleading and cries and moans would not stop. Soo-Ah put her hands over her ears, those unbearable sounds bringing tears to her eyes.
"Is this what men do? Is this what it means to be a man?" she thought bitterly while descending the crates and leaving the woman at Big Brother's mercy. With every shuddering gasp she heard she could not help having more and more pity for that girl and more and more disdain for Ho-Orabeoni.
Because of the three men, she knew well, her grandfather, Hun-Gyeol and Big Brother she could say for sure that at least two of them were capable of hurting someone like that.
Sure, she heard the same squealing sighs from uncle and Noona's room, and she had long since made up her mind that uncle liked to torture women. He made Noona work during the day and punished her for her mistakes during the night. And now she had learned how he did that. But she never thought Big Brother would be the same. Where was the balance between men and women that her grandfather talked about? There was only pain and that terrifying weapon on a man's body that was used to inflict it.
"But why? What if men are serving demons? Like the Kumiho legends, stupid Auntie and Jung-In scared me." She remembered in horror the stories about demons shapeshifting into beautiful people to seduce the unfortunate, making disciples out of them for their evil plans or for eating their hearts and liver.
"Or maybe this is what Grandfather meant when he talked about Yang being powerful. Men are the ones who start wars so men kill people with their power and now men also hurt women that way. They must have something evil inside to make them do these things." Outrage filled her little heart.
Until realisation struck her, and fear began to slowly take hold of her. "Would anyone ever hurt me this way? Would Grandfather hurt someone like this? He cannot have a weapon like that. I never heard sounds from his room." More tears fell and tied in a knot under her chin. "But Big Brother, are you evil? You were so kind and good to me, and I liked you so… But you are just as beautiful and as tricky as a Kumiho! Evil like all evils, and now I do not want to look at you anymore."
Wiping and smudging the snot all over her face, Soo-Ah cried out as she ran for the back garden. "I never want to see you again, Ho-Orabeoni! I hate you!" She continued running and trying to escape her despair. Tears would not stop flowing down from her eyes as she felt her heart breaking. All her faith in men was fading away.
When she finally stopped crying, she returned to her room. She was so ashamed of what she had witnessed and so disappointed in her big brother. Her face was bright red, her cheeks were burned with embarrassment, anger and fear. Tears and snot slowly dried on her skin.
