Mini Chapter 1

Greg & Jane

{Greg's POV}

A lot of crazy things has been going on lately but what's even crazier is the fact that Alex and Laurel are bent on helping someone they don't know out of prison.

Alex took a leave from work and left most of his duties in my care. Thank God for Kilkenny who is still around to help me, if not, I'd probably mess things up like I always did in the past.

“Hey twerp! Aren't you supposed to be working?!” A voice calls me out of my thoughts.

Apart from his responsibilities, he also left for me his enemies to be picked on. Working with most people here is worse than a nightmare.

I look up at the brawn standing in front of me. “Mind your business Mister,” I say with no iota of respect.

“What!” He freaks out.

Alex has taught me a lot of things about his work but he didn't teach me how he has been handling the idiots he works with. But I'll have to deal with them my own way.

“Did you just talk back at me in that manner?” He threatens.

“Hell yeah I did! I may be Alex's brother but no way I'm going to tolerate this behavior like he did,” I confidently say. Alex has deprived me too many times to give this guy a piece of my mind.

“You think you're smart, huh?!”

I know this is going to lead to a challenge outside office grounds. I don't want to disappoint my boss and most of all my brother so I better deal with this right here, right now.

Outwardly, he looks like he worked as a failing wrestler in his past, so muscular and very intimidating. Unfortunately, he is my senior colleague and Alex's worst enemy. Ever since Alex got promoted as the Head of Marketing Department, he's been seeking ways to sabotage his work and now that he's on leave, I'll be the one getting bullied. Never! I hate bullies. And I hate being in this situation.

“If you even think of bullying me, you know I won't keep quiet. I might even dig up all the nasty things you've done to me and Alex so far and you'll be out of here before you know it,” I stand up to him face to face.

“You little…” he tries to scare me with his strong, poorly moulded face.

“I'm not afraid of you!” I confront him.

I'm really not afraid of him. Well, partially because I've got Kilkenny behind me - the Rae Kester brothers are his favourite employees. Other than that, he doesn't know shit about me. He may be a wrestler in his past life or whatever but I'm the coyote he doesn't wanna mess with. I know how cunning works.

After my anti-bullying speech, one by one, people stand to give me an ovation. OMG! I'm actually getting a standing ovation. The look on his face made my day. I can't be any prouder. He scuffles away and that is how to defeat Baxter, the second-in-command to Kilkenny - well, not literally. He must have intimidated everyone else in this firm to have reached that position.

As I expect, the rest of my day turns out much better. Hopefully, the rest of my time here as an employee.

{Jane's POV}

“I love him. I love him not. I love him. I love him not…” I keep saying until I pluck out every petal on a red rose flower I picked from the bushes in front of my house and finally, it ends up in ‘I love him.’

This is stupid. This old silly game I saw in a movie last night. How can I be in love with Colin? How is that even possible?

“How is it not possible?” My mini angel says, standing on my right shoulder with a halo on its head and wings bigger than twice its size.

“Don't be ridiculous Jane!” My mini demon says, standing on my left shoulder with its signature horns and a whip-like arrowed-tip tail.

“Colin is in prison, how is it possible that I am falling in love with him?” I ask my two advisers.

“What makes you think you're in love?” My demon asks.

“Love is a magical experience. It doesn't send an invitation letter before knocking on the door of your heart,” my angel says.

“So also does heartbreak. The cold, lonely depression that will come when Colin disappoints you,” my demon responds.

“But…”

“You already know Colin hates you so much. He calls you names and taunts you nonstop. He will never look at you the way he looked at Ivy especially now that his heart is broken and you're not there to console him,” my demon argues.

My angel just rolls her eyes.

“What? Isn't it true?” My demon asks my angel.

“First of all, Colin is not a bad person, he's just a victim of circumstance. Secondly, now that his heart is broken, it's the perfect opportunity to confirm your feelings,” my angel replies.

“And by confirming her feelings, Colin will reject her, right?” My demon sneers. “Besides, I'm sure he thinks your family are just a bunch of opportunists,” she tells me.

“You're such a liar!” My angel argues. “Even if that's his opinion, it's Jane's duty to change it.”

“Hey guys,” I interrupt their argument. “I know Colin is in love with Ivy. But that day he looked at me in the eye, I can swear he felt something because I felt it too.”

“See!” My angel boasts.

“Colin doesn't trust you, how can you be sure he loves you?” My demon asks. “How can you be sure you love him? Maybe you just miss him annoying you and your constant exchange of cuss words which I enjoy very much.”

“Like they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder,” my angel responds. “Jane just realized her feelings for him because he's away.”

I smile. My angel is right.

“From the very beginning of this case, you've always believed in him and you know he isn't capable of the crime he's being accused of. Despite all those vulgar words you exchange with him, you both know that somewhere deep inside your hearts, you feel something for each other,” my angel convinces me completely.

My demon starts to fume mad.

“Remember the way he held your hand, the special ten seconds you shared looking into his eyes,” my angel continues.

…and they disappear as I hear a knock on the door. I realize I'm supposed to be reading for a test.

“Miss Jane, dinner is served!” Our newly hired housekeeper calls out.
