Sometimes we make a mistake of not listening. We do not listen to what we should have heard. We either are scared to know the whole truth, or we ignore the things we needed to know. Sometimes we just listen to only half of it and miss out the rest we become deaf to the words that we should have heard. The office is the same. The walls had charts and noted pinned up with thumbtacks on the brown board on the opposite side. Papers and files were stacked one on another on the white desk. She could see two computer monitors on the side of the desk. It seemed like an article was open. Alya moved on the rotating chair while waiting. Dr Brown entered the room with a file in his hand. Alya looked for the board he used to carry. He greeted Alya with a smile. He patted her head and sat in his chair “ How are you doing these days?” She grinned “I am doing fine.” Dr Brown bend forward and hit her head with a brown clip board, “ I heard from your mother that you had another attack.” ‘Ahh so there is where it was’ she thought and rubbed her head. “ Sorry I was careless for a bit the stress of work got to me” Alya had to sit and listen to the strict lectures on her health. She looked around ‘how to escape this mess?’ Dr Brown hit her head again, “ Are you listening to me at all?” Alya sat straight quickly, “ Yes Sir no mistakes anymore I will make sure of it.” After a little silence. They laughed ‘ Maybe people do change but somethings remain the same. The board is still there I just did no see it’ 5:52pm The coffee swirled in the cup. Alya kept on stirring the cup. She was deep in thoughts. She thought of Cynthia again. She seemed very young and childish, but she have her pride this was proven in a few days. She kept on helping Cynthia with the coffee even when she ordered dark coffee she would be served with a sweeter version. A week later Cynthia walked in front of Alya and screamed at her ………………………………. “ What are you playing at?” Alya, “ Is there anyway I can help you Miss Cynthia?” Cynthia looked red with anger she looked ready to break something. “ What is your game? Why are you doing this?” Alya looked around her there was no one around the coffee room thankfully. “ Miss Cynthia if I have hurt you in anyway I am sorry I do not mean as such.” Cynthia. “Really? You are not doing all this to impress Brian? You are all the same.” Alya looked a bit uncomfortable at her loud voice. “ I believe everything we all do in this office is indicated to make our boss and customer happy. That is why we are payed.” Cynthia looked down and shook a bit “You are trying to play with words only you just want to grab his attention and grab him when you get the chance.” Alya sternly looked at her. “I think there is a misunderstanding in this. No matter what anyone says. I must make it clear that Sir is not an object to be processed he has every right to choose who he wants none of us can force ourselves in it.” Cynthia took a back step the lady in front of her is scaring her. She took a few breath and looked up Alya was still looking at her there was no change in her expression. It felt like a long time before Cynthia spoke again her shoulder dropped. “You know don’t you? What you are doing is actually out of pity for me. I thought otherwise but you think small of me don’t you?” Alya softened her eyes “ So what if I did?” This made Cynthia look up in a shock she did not expect an answer like this. One or two tears dropped from her eyes. Alya, “ You were struggling to drink the coffee and you were trying really hard to impress your Fiancé. If I help you a bit what is wrong with that?” Cynthia’s body shook more she was holding back her tears “ You should not you must have a reason to do this. Nobody does as such.” Alya felt a little sad for her and shook her head Cynthia was a bit shorter than her. She bent down and held out her handkerchief forward. “ I do not mean any harm Miss Cynthia and I am very sorry if I made you feel anxious we were just concerned about you.” Cynthia grabbed the handkerchief and walked out really fast dabbing her eyes. Alya looked at her and thought ‘I wonder if I will get my hanky back’. She went back to stirring her small cup of coffee and walked out ‘ ugh I wish the cups were bigger’ She sighed. She saw Aiden standing close to the door. His eyes had a look suspicious look. She smile as a greeting and walked past him. Aiden, “ Did you mean what you said .” he sounded calm, but the voice did not indicate he is calm at all. Alya, “ She looked back a bit. I have no reason to lie .” …………………… “ Hello where are you gone too?” Ray joined the table with two chocolate donuts. Alya, “ Sorry I was just in memories.” Ray,” You are really quiet than you were before.” She took a bite of the donut and smiled “ How is the family? I heard from Lucas. Ray took out his phone and showed her the picture. Ray was standing with his wife ‘ She looks pretty’ Alya smiled Ray had a small kid grinning. She gave back the phone “ She is beautiful.” Ray. “ Did you meet Brian? I heard he lives in the same city” Alya smiled Brian was the last person she wanted to think of right now. “I did but he is really busy with the company. We hardly see each other.” Ray, “ I see things have changed a lot between you two.” Alya, “ I do not think he recognized me. I guess it is better this way.” Ray, “ You know after you left…..” Alya held her hand up “ Please I really do not wish to hear anything regarding him.” Ray, “ You guys were really close together.” Alya looked at her cup again she sighed. “ There are too many people around him. It is better if he does not recognize me. “ Ray wanted to say something but Alya dismissed it she did not want to hear anything about it. She did not want to be reminded of the past. Ray looked at her worried. She had to assure him that everything is fine. There is nothing to worry about. They had a long talk. Ray invited her to have dinner with his family the next day. It became dark by the time she left the café. She walked slowly by the pavement. She felt a little curious about what Ray wanted to say. ‘Ahhh this is a hassle it is better I do not know it is a pain to think so much anyway…’
