Just the two of us

I wake up to the sound of birds chirping, I check to see that it's only me in the bed by placing my hand where he slept and discovering that it's cold so I sit up to find my balcony door open. I put on a dressing gown and head to the balcony to find him admiring the view.

"I forgot how great the town looks with the sun glistening off of it." I say while walking up where he's standing and placing a hand on his shoulder.

He turns his head in my direction with a small smile to show me that he doesn't mind me being here and looks back says "Yeah it still amazes me."

I lean on the railing admiring the view for a few seconds before asking the question I've been meaning to ask him since we left the tree.

"How have you been since yesterday, you've been quiet since we decided to come back here."

He looks down at the floor while he inhales and exhales slowly and I patiently wait for him to answer.

After a few deep breaths he answers "I've hid it for so long now and now its out in the open, I'm not really sure how to process it all but the fact that your still here helps."

He walks up to me so that he can cup my face with his hands and while he's looking into my eyes he whispers "A lot." Then he kisses me with so much love but with the way his hands grip on to me is like if he lets go then I'm going to disappear.

"I'm never going to leave you Nick" I whisper before I hug him and we stay like that while we watch the people setting up their stalls getting ready for the day ahead.

"So" says Nick which surprises me. "What's the princess up to today since her parents are out of town right now?"

"Well this princess has to do some royal duties, while my parents are out of town I'm in charge, If it wasn't for your father I most likely would of freaked out."

He smiled when I talked about his dad, he doesn't have to say it but I know he's proud of his dad, I wish I had a dad like him, that considers everyone's feelings instead of thinking about how it would benefit him.

"Yeah he does that to people, I remember the time I was left in charge of the workers children because the school was closed, your parents decided to have a party the night before."

"I remember that, I was introduced to 16 entitled 'think their so special' suiters that night."

"Everyone else was busy with their own jobs and I was only free because I didn't have that many chores yet, I can't complain it's where I met you for the first time."

---flashback---

"It looks like I'm looking after you while your parents are working."

"What's everyone favourite thing to do when they have some free time, mine's hanging out with my dad or if he's busy I like to play the guitar."

"Mine's arts and craft"

"Playing with trains"

"Playing dress up"

"Dancing"

"Wasn't expecting so many different things so why not start with the kids play area, I heard that they have one here somewhere."

"Yep it used to belong to the princess when she was little but they kept it because of days like this."

"And how do you know that?"

"I heard my parents talking about it, how generous the princess was to let the children use it."

"So have anyone met the princess?"

"We all have, she came to our school, she's so cool and she really listens to us. Have you met her yet?"

"No I've rarely left my dad's office, I've only started working here a few weeks ago."

"We're here"

"Wow this room is big."

"Can we go and play now?"

"Sorry, uhh yeah go ahead, go play."

"Uh, mi- um mister"

"Yeah oh hello do you need something little one?"

"Would you mind playing something for us, I got this from the music room."

"Please play something for us."

"Yeah"

"Please"

"Will you"

"For us"

"Ok fine but just this one, this is one of my favourite songs to do, it's called Once in a lifetime."

"I think that became my new favourite song."

"Hey princess"

"Katie sweetie we talked about this it's ok to call me Evie."

"Sorry"

"It's alright"

"So your the guy that's looking after them, I'm princess Evelyn but Evelyn is fine."

"I'm Nicklaus but most people call me Nick."

"Well Nick it was good meeting you and I hope to see you around."

There was a knock on the door that knocked us out of the trance we were both in.

"Sorry to interrupt but there are people waiting for their princess to make an appearance."

"Good luck Eve"

I kiss him one more time before I left.
