The greatest drawback was that it was addictive. He felt alive for the first time with the euphoria. He was always on the chase for that first high. The world seemed to make sense. It was as if it took away his innocence and naivety and opened his mind to the "real" world. Everything was slower and he was the master of his own domain. He was able to pass his examinations in school but more importantly he was able to write his own books of the intricacies of life and essays on profound topics. He would become bestseller author. People could not believe the simplicity yet awareness of his novels. It was as if he signed his soul to the devil by the new form talent he possessed. He felt ashamed to mention Drug Z. He thought people would suggest it as "cheating". In addition, he thought this gave him the competitive advantage he needed. If everyone were aware it would level the playing field to the point, he would be an ordinary writer. Nobody wants to be labeled as a fraud, but Irving justified the use of Drug Z because he was prescribed it and did his own research.
