Ciara's POV
I watched as Kayla fell asleep with her head resting on my lap. I played with her hair like I always did, since we were younger when I was bored or worried about her. I was always loved her hair, since it had a nice smooth texture to it. She was breathing unevenly and her body shook. The fever was getting worse for her to handle. I took out a small towel and a bottle of water. I opened the bottle of water and wetting the towel, placing it on her forehead hoping for the fever to come down. "Please, don't die," I said out loud hoping if there were any Gods in this world to grant my wish.
I kissed her head as my tears rolled down my cheeks "How is she?" I flinched at the sound of Caleb's voice. "Sorry didn't mean to scare you," he said when he saw me flinch.
I looked up at him and smiled weakly "It's ok. She's getting worse. The fever is getting higher and her body won't stop shaking," I told him as I looked back down at my sister from another mother. The bandages were looking bloody and soon enough I'll have to change them. "She was always a fighter," I heard myself said to no one, but Caleb answered me anyway.
"She is," Caleb said as he went to sit in the seat in front of me.
I looked at him "You think she's going to pull through? I mean, it's Sky we're talking about here. She always pulls through in the worst case scenario," I asked him my voice rising a little in paranoia. I didn't want to lose the only person that had kept me living through all this hell and the only person that considered me family, even though we were related by blood.
I could tell every person in this bus was looking at me, even Coach Martin who was driving. Caleb was looking at Kayla when he answered "I don't know. I mean, we've seen what just one bite or scratch does to a person. They turn into a Walker in a matter of minutes sometime hours," he told me and I knew it was true. We all have seen that in front of our eyes and outside the house, where we had lived for the past seven months.
"She won't live," Jackie said in her high pitched voice. Caleb's and my head snapped in her direction. She was sitting next to Mark, who sitting next to the window trying to get as much space between her and him.
I glared at her "Say that one more time, I dare you," I said through my teeth.
Jackie smirked "She won't live," she said her voice challenging me. I was about to snap at her since I couldn't move, when Kayla stopped breathing and moving.
I looked down at her and started shaking her, but she wouldn't open her eyes. Her skin felt cold to the touch. I placed two fingers on her neck trying to find a pulse, but I felt nothing. My heart was thundering in my chest wanting to come out. I cried.
"No," Caleb and I screamed together.
Kayla's POV
I was surrounded by darkness. I had walked endlessly through this black hole trying to find a white light, if you want to call it that. I didn't feel tired at all, but I still had my bite marks. The bite marks of the two Walker's had made, while I was fighting them.
"Kayla," I heard a whisper in front me. It echoed throughout this place like your voice would echo in the Grand Canyon. I followed the voice, since I didn't have anything else to do. I was stuck in this place with no way out. Caleb had probably already shot my Walker's body like I told him to. "Kayla," the same voice whispered my name and it was getting closer. Suddenly, a flash of white light appeared in front of me blinding me for a moment. What I saw shocked me.
I was standing in my grandmother's kitchen. The smell of hand-made cookie lingered in the air making it smell sweet. The walls were a golden color, since her favorite color was gold. And standing by the stove was my grandmother just like I remembered her. Her long grey hair hung by her waist, her skin had that same pale color as me, and she was the same height as me. We also had the same violet eyes. "Granny," I breathed.
She turned around with a smile on her face "It has been a long time, granddaughter," she said opening her arms towards me.
I happily ran into her arms and hugged her "I missed you, Gran," I said in her chest the tears I hadn't shed in her funeral finally came out.
Her embrace was just like I remembered when I was a little girl. "I missed you to, but I have been watching you all this time," she told me in my hair.
I pulled back "I guess I really am dead, aren't I?" I asked grandma.
She shook her head "No, you are not," she told me grabbing hold on my chin and lifting my face, so that her violet eyes would lock onto my own.
I looked at her confused "What do you mean?" I asked her.
She sigh "I'm to tell you that your destiny as just begun, my dear. You have the powers from our ancestors running in your blood. Neither father nor brother has this power, because it is handed down through the generation of women not men," she said to me. I remembered one of the stories she used to tell me about this girl that had powers and that every woman in her generation would inherit that power," Grand told me.
I was still a little confused "what does that have to do with me being here?" I asked her.
Her smile widens "The bite of a Walker, as you and your group call them, won't affect you. But it will have side effects like high fever and your body will get weaker," she said "But the choice is up to you, my dear. Do you want to go back and help your friends or do you want to stay here with me?" she asked me.
This was a huge decision for me that only I could make. Would I stay with her here watching as everyone I know and love and I wouldn't be able to do shit about it or I could go back and use this mysterious power to protect them and help them survive? Well, the answer to that is simple. I looked at my Grandmother straight in her violet eyes "I will go back," I said to her my voice was stronger than ever.
She hugged me "I knew you would do the right thing, my dear Sky. Your blood and body have been fighting the virus and it will hurt a lot when you wake up," she told me as she pulled away from me and her voice started to fade, as was everything else. Pain surged through my body making me drop to my knees. I was gasping for air, as another wave of pain rocked my body. I felt myself falling backwards to nowhere, and then BAM.
I sat up screaming my head off and feeling a wave of vomit rising on my throat. I picked myself up from the seat I was sitting on and yelled "Stop," at the top of my lungs. I ran as fast as I could without stumbling towards the bus door. "Open," I yelled again not stopping to see if the door was opened. I would have thrown myself at the door, if Coach Martin wouldn't have opened the door fast. I jumped of the steps and dropped to my knees vomiting blood. I was throwing up blood for the past five minutes in a half and by the time I had stopped throwing up I was gasping for breath. I hastily pushed myself to my feet and walked back on the bus, where Ciara threw herself at me and crushed me into a bear hug.
"I knew it. I knew you wouldn't die," she yelled in my ear. I was still weak on my feet and it took me all my will power not to fall on down the steps. I held onto Ciara and pushed myself forward with her still in my arms.
"Ciara, not that I don't mind you hugging me, but my body is still weak," I said in a raspy voice. I could still taste my blood on my mouth.
She pulled away from me "Sorry, I'm just happy you're not a Walker," she said and I noticed her face was puffy by all the tears she had shed.
I wiped away the ones falling "Why are you crying? I didn't go anywhere," I told her gently. She grabbed me by my hand and pulled me to where we were sitting. She sat me down like I was some fragile infant.
"You did die," Caleb's voice reached my ears. I was happy to hear his voice that I knew so well, but I didn't understand what he meant about me dying.
I looked at him "What do you mean?" I asked him confusion obviously on my voice and face. I was Ciara flinch a little. I gave her a what-the-fuck look.
Caleb sighed "You stopped breathing an hour ago and you didn't have a heartbeat," he told me. I've been dead for an hour, I thought. "Ciara wouldn't let anyone near your body and I wouldn't either," he told me. I had no heart beat? I stopped and tried to feel my heart beat. BA BUM, BA BUM, yeah there it is.
I looked at them "I have a heartbeat," I said and grabbed his right hand placing it on my chest, so that he would feel my beating heart. My heart beats were faster than normal, but it was still beating and that's what counted.
Caleb looked shocked and surprised "How?" he asked me.
I shook my head "I don't know. I guess I'm just immune to the bites," I said not wanting to tell them what really happened to me. I didn't want them to know about my meeting with my Granny. I wanted to keep that to myself at the moment the one precious moment I had with my Granny. I turned to look at Coach Martin "Where are we?" I asked him.
He looked at me through the mirror; we had started moving again when I had stepped back inside. "We just passed Okeechobee," Coach told me. Damn, he covered that much ground in just an hour? Impressive, I thought. I leaned back on the seat I was sitting and closed my eyes. I could feel the Walker's outside this bus wondering around the place on their own looking for their next victim, but twenty miles later I felt the body heat of one person in the Walker's group.
I shot up "Stop," I yelled making Coach Martin flinch, but he still stopped the bus. I took out my gun and headed for the door. I looked at him "Open it," I said my voice commanding. They all knew that when my voice came out into a command that it was very important. He opened the door without a word or questioning, but it was to dark for me to see. I at both Ciara and Caleb "Either one of you have a flashlight?" I asked them.
"I do," I heard Mark say. I looked over at him, who was now looking through his backpack until he found what he was looking for. He threw me the flashlight "Hope it works for you," he told me a smile on his face.
I returned his smile "Thanks," I told him and turned back to Coach Martin. "The moment I get out the bus, close the doors and wait for me, understood?" I asked him and he gave me one nod telling me he understood. Yeah, I know I said my body was still weak, which it is. But I can't just leave behind someone that's stuck in this place with the Walker's. I could tell the body heat belong to someone younger than me and the rest of my group. I headed across the road towards the ditch, where there was cars crashed there. I moved silently dodging Walker's here and there. I was nearing a car that had the body heat radiating from it, as I neared it I could see the shadow. The shadow coward away from me, as I neared it; I guess he or she thought I was a Walker.
"Hey," I whispered to the shadow. I was neared the rear end of the car, where I saw the little shadow. I shone my flashlight towards the shadow and was shocked by what I saw. It was a child no older than thirteen years old with spiked up brown hair, brown-green eyes, torn clothing, dirt on his face, tan skin, and boney. I guess he hasn't eaten in days may be weeks. The kid cowered away from me "Hey, it is ok. I'm not one of them," I gently told him making a slow silent approach towards him.
The kid flinched from my approach "You can trust me," I told him extending my right hand towards him. He looked at hand, then at me and back at looking at my hand. "I can help you," I said to him. He extended his boney left hand towards my own and took hold of it with a firm grasp. I held onto his hand and pulled him to his feet the kid stumbled towards me. I turned off the flashlight and tugged him gently in my direction and held onto him like a mother would hold onto her child.
The kid wrapped his arms around my waist tightly, but I loosen his grip and pulled him into my arms. I carried him back from where I came from dodging some Walker's towards the bus that was still there. There was some Walker's making their way towards the bus, but since they were slow I walked faster than them. I was in front of the bus doors and knocked three times making some Walker's coming this way faster and started moaning. "Shit," I said under my breath. The doors opened and I rushed in with the kid in my arms "Close the doors now, the Walkers are making their way here," I told Coach as I rushed in.
He just nodded closed the doors and put the bus in drive driving at full speed. Running over some Walker's that were in our way. I put the kid down, but he just wrapped his arms around my waist; his little figure shaking. I looked at Caleb "Get me some food and some clothes for him, please," I told him.
He nodded "Of course," he said and started rampaging through backpacks.
I lead the kid towards where I was sitting, un-wrapping his arms from my waist and seating him down. I looked at Mark and threw him back his flashlight "Thanks it helped me a lot," I said to him with an honest smile.
He chuckled "You're very welcome," he said putting back the flashlight in his backpack. "I see you found a survivor," he said to me looking at the kid.
I nodded "Yeah, he doesn't speak though," I told him "But he does holds on to me."
Ciara came over to see the kid "Aw his adorable," she said "Hi, I'm Ciara."
Ciara introduced herself to him, but he wouldn't even glance at her. He just kept his eyes on me. "Sky, why does he keep looking at you?" she asked me, obviously annoyed with the kid's attitude.
I shrugged "I don't know," was all I told her.
Caleb rushed over to my side with a can of Chef Boyardee of spaghetti and a shirt with short shorts. "Here you go," he said handing me the stuff plus a plastic spoon. I opened the can of spaghetti and placed the can to his hands with the spoon. He ate like it was the last food he would ever eat in this life time.
"Great, bring more people with us," Sam said. I looked at him and glared.
I started to walk towards him, but I felt the kid's hand gripping my arm. I looked at him and his eyes were filled with so much fear that I could tell he didn't want me to leave him, so I just stood next to me. "Why do you care so much with what I do? I couldn't just leave him there with all does Walker's around him. He could have died," I was yelling at him. I hated when people are so selfish that they would let a child die just to save their skin.
He stood up "And you were supposed to be one of them, but apparently you're fucking immune to the Walker's bites. You were supposed to be dead a long time ago," he yelled.
"Don't yell at her," I froze. The kid had just talked. His voice was weak but loud. I looked over at him and he was just staring up head with the can of Chef Boyardee on his hands, but he looked at me and looked at Sam. "At least she isn't selfish like you, moron," he said in his weak voice.
I couldn't help but chuckle and shuffled his brown hair "I like him," James said. James used to be a jock at school with blue eyes, black hair, angular jaw structure, six-foot-five, and light brown skin. He used to be a jerk, but now he turned out rather fine. He was nicer and used his brain more, but his not that much talkative anymore.
Sam was red with anger "What the hell did you just said to me kid?" he said shooting glares at the kid.
I looked at him "Don't you pick on him, Sam," I growled at him. I loosen the kid's grip on my arm and made my way towards Sam. "I may be a freak, Sam, but I at least still have my fucking soul. It doesn't mean you can pick on the weaker once," I said to him my voice carried out strong and confident, because I was speaking the truth. I placed my hand over his heart and felt a slight tingle course through my hands to his body feeling a shiver pass over both of us. "Don't let your past cover you heart. Everything that we all did is in the past and it's better to let it go. You know exactly what I am talking about," I told him and I knew that he knew what I meant. Last year, he was blame for something he hadn't done and he kept a grudge against that.
Sam was shocked by my words and I could tell he didn't have a comeback. "Fine," he whispered and sat back down.
I made my way back to the kid "So you can talk now," I said to him.
The kid looked at me and smiled "Yeah, thanks for helping me," he said his voice getting stronger.
I couldn't help smiling back "No problem, but I can't keep calling you Kid," I told him.
"It's Jasper," he suddenly said.
I blinked "What?" I asked him feeling stupid.
He laughed "My name is Jasper," he repeated again.
"Kayla, but they all call me Sky," I told him.
"Cute," was all he said and started eating again.
I looked at Coach Martin "We need to find a place to spend the night," I told Coach Martin.
He nodded "I know that's what I've been looking for," he told me. Coach Martin wasn't like other coaches. He was actually athletic, shoulder length blood hair, dark brown eyes, golden skin, and face like any other male.
"Where are we?" I asked him.
"We're in Oviedo," he told me.
I nodded "Alafaya Woods Boulevard. There some housing around that area," I told Coach. We made our way towards Alafaya woods Boulevard, which surprisingly didn't have that much Walker's going around terrorizing the place. There was only around ten of them. "This is going to be so much fun for me," I said "Stop right there in front of that house," I said pointing at one of the housing. I took out both knifes the one I had on my belt in the back and the one I had on my left boot, which was still bloody.
Jasper took hold of my arm 'What are you doing? Where are you going?" he asked me.
I looked at him "I have to take care of the Walker's, before the rest of us to go in," I told him kneeling in front of him.
He shook his head "No, I don't want you to go. You may get bit and become one of them," he told me. I touched his cheeks and pulled up my left arm, where one of the Walker's had bit me. I showed him my arm and the gauze ripping it out and showing him the bite mark.
I heard him gasp "I was bit two hours ago, Jasper. What Sam said about me supposed to be dead is true. Walker's bite doesn't affect me," I told him getting up to my feet and kissed the top of his head. I didn't have to tell Coach to open the door, because he already had it open when I come towards it. Jumping off the steps and heard the doors closed, I got to work. "Hey, you mother fuckers. Let's see what your fucking made off," I yelled at the top of my lungs and walking towards the middle of the street.
All ten Walker's looked my way and starting moaning, while walking towards me. I felt an evil smile tugging at my lips. I ran at full speed and started killing. I have to admit I enjoyed it. I had taken out some stress that had been building up for a while. I would kick and stab them or I would jump on them bring both knifes down on top of their heads. By the time I was finished both knifes were covered in blood and I had blood on just my hands this time. I signaled the group to get out, but I didn't wait for them. I still had to check the inside of the house for any Walker's.
I walked up to the open front door and sensed nothing. There was no Walker inside the house, but I still went in looking in any place where they could hide themselves. I notice they had a back door towards a small patio and the best thing about it was that it was fenced. The house only had five rooms and three bathrooms, so one room was going to have three people in one bedroom. I signaled the group inside the house and got them settled. Caleb and Sam shared one room. Coach and another teacher shared the second room. James and Mark shared the third room. A teacher and another teacher shared the fourth room. And Ciara was going to share a room with Jasper.
"Where will you sleep at?" Ciara asked me.
I pointed at the sofa "I'll sleep there, after I take a shower," I said walking by her and heading to the shower in her room, soon enough everyone had showered and was all heading to sleep.
I, on the other hand, kept watch of the house that's why I wanted to sleep in the living room. I didn't trust a place I was accustoming with. I would keep watch, until morning.
