An Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living

"Occam's Razor, has anyone heard of it?" Venus's head is flush with the desk as she looks out the window beside her. Zaire hasn't returned to school since she had been in that cottage in the woods. She hasn't seen her brother either and it's been a week. "It is a basic philosophy stating the simplest answer is the correct one after all other possibilities have been subtracted. Whether you believe that or not is up to you but," As Venus closes her eyes she is immediately in what she can only assume is a dream.

---

"Lilith, you are with child again." A woman tracing the bump on her stomach nods at the man. "I'm glad. Don't stop until you feel ready. I'd fill this land with children before I'd tell you no."

A woman with golden skin, reddish-golden, wavy, long hair, and emerald green eyes lays on a bed of hay in what looks like a cave. "Samael, I'm scared for you. What will our father say? I'm still married to Adam." Samael sits beside her, rubbing her stomach. "Sometimes the most simple answer will be the correct one. Our father in Heaven is a very simple God and a good one. He will provide us with happiness if we trust in him to guide us. I believe this is right. It feels right. I love you, and I would choose you, Lilith, a million times. If that isn't right I don't know what is." Lilith smiles holding and squeezing her husband's hand. "I would also choose you a million times. Even if it meant I had to meet our father's punishment. There's no doubt in my mind, that I'd choose you."

Venus is jolted suddenly by someone, waking her from her nap. "Ms. Clay, I'm afraid this is the last time you'll be falling asleep in my class. You have been absent-minded and your brother physically absent. I'm suspending you and Mr. Clay from my lessons until another professor can tell me this depressive behavior has changed." Venus groans, stretching to grabbing her things on the other side of her. "Of course ma'am but I'll have to disappoint you then. I don't think I'll be available for classes anymore." She leaves the classroom and as she blankly slinks her way to her flat she begins recalling her dream. "Odd, I guess I've been thinking about what my brother said a little too much... She looked exactly like me though, uncanny." Venus is about to leave when she remembers the building's extensive library. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt to at least try and see if he was lying. To have sustainable proof what he said was contradictory."

Venus goes to the library scanning every title she can for something on Lilith or Samael. In the end, there is nothing she can find except this one book. It's a demonology book called Daemonologie published by King James I of Scotland and another rendering by King James VI of England. She can't understand a word of it. She takes it to her room and reads every word. Re-reads it twice over two weeks but it's like a foreign language to her.

"I should have paid attention in class." she throws the book onto the floor and lays back onto her bed. There are thoughts once again racing in her head. She's curious about what her brother meant no matter how blasphemous it may seem. Even Eve sought out knowledge, no?
